WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JANUARY

I hope everyone is having a good start to the New Year. My bronchitis is finally starting to shift, although I'm still coughing like someone with a forty a day habit! (This from a non-smoker!)
DH and I went for a lovely, relaxed walk today. It was wonderful just to spend some time together alone - family and company are fine, but it's nice to be 'couply' for a change.
I have an appointment at the hospital later this week, to find out when I am to have my heart valve replacement operation. By choice I am going to try to have it postponed until March time as I would like to be available to help my DD#1 with the twins until they are a little older. Also, I feel that my DD#2 needs my support to help get over yet another failed attempt at IVF.
Obviously, if the cardiologist says that I need the surgery sooner, then I will have to accept that.
It is strange for me to think that I don't actually have to lose any more weight as I am now below my target. However, I am keen on losing at least another eight pounds or so - then I will reassess the situation.
One other thing that I want to do this year... learn to read a bicycle! Can you believe I can't do it? I will have to take it easy with my arthritic knee, but I'm going to give it a go.
Time for me to get moving.
Good wishes and love to all.

Day 2 starting out with Dance DVD, wii and a few minutes on the floor, still feeling pretty "GOOD".
Thank goodness for all these inside alternatives, temps here ranging from single digits to the 20s with wind that makes outdoors unappealing. And thanks Michelle for the Play it again sports lead. I don't mind getting 1/3 original price back as long as its not store credit but CASH...
Anybody played the Zumba fitness game for wii? :huh:0 -
Hi it sounds really good. I would like to join and need lots of help to keep motivated, have only joined yesterday but am going to make it work! Nice to meet you0

My hope for this journey is to be consistant. I can't tell you how many times I have started then stopped. I know I can do this, but I will be difficult.0

Hi Kandy and Diva.....I'm new here too. Just jump in and we will all help each other got those healthy bodies we know we deserve!0

Hello,
My house guests left this AM despite road conditions reported to be in only "fair winter driving condition" and snow falling. I did try to persuade my parents to stay until the road conditions were reported as good but they were determined to head home. So far I have received 2 cellphone calls from them as they proceed on the long trip advising that things are not too bad and they believe the road conditions are improving. Must admit, it is difficult to respect that of course my parents still make their own decisions. It would be so much easier if they would just listen to me!???
Despite not wanting Dad to drive in the current road conditions, it is very nice to have my house back. Silly but with Dad and Mom here, I didn't use my some of my usual "tricks" to manage my eating and now I can. For example, when I am very "snacky" and need to eat a lot, I hot air pop a big bowl of popcorn, spray it with a little olive oil, sprinkle with a little parmesan cheese and eat it all myself very slowly. I allow myself to eat this whenever I want (as long as I include it as part of my calorie total) and sometimes this is my breakfast! Now my husband, hates the dry popcorn so he doesn't even want any but also has no comments or opinions on the normalcy of this "trick". But my parents, well this isn't an acceptable or normal thing to do (or anything they have seen before) so they are full of comments and opinions, and well, it is just easier not to have popcorn when they visit. Now that my visitors are gone, I will have popcorn anytime I want again! Funny that at 53 my parents influence over my actions is strong but my influence over them?? Well they are currently driving in road conditions that I wish they were not!
I am hoping that eating healthy and exercising will also be easier with the holiday season over. I look forward to getting into a good rhythm of healthy habits.
Darlis I will keep you in my thoughts today and send out good wishes as you enjoy the family times, cherish the traditions and are tested by the tastes of the family favourite foods. I second Jeannie's recommendation: H20 is a great help for big or little slips. The important thing: tomorrow family temptations/triggers (and really any of today's successes and slips) will be over and the water will be available! Rereading the last sentence, I realize I will take that advice myself!:embarassed:
Today, I was very challenged to maintain my goal of inner calm. I may have made some bad decisions and eaten a little too much at lunch to salve my spirit. Only 140 calories left for my supper: so soup is now on the menu and perhaps some extra exercise for the evening agenda. And I too will put the family triggers in the past and drink water!
Take care all,
Karlene0 -
Hi Jane. Which kinds of horses do you especially like?
Anyone who wants to get rid of foods: my local soup kitchen will take donations of even homemade things like cookies. Before you throw it out, see if some poor person can use it.
wizzywig - I used to sometimes have a problem where I'd be ready to post something (have it all written) and then I must hit a button by accident all the entire document disappeared! Oh, that's frustrating! Then Vince looked at it and showed me to hit the "undo" tab. Hopefully, next time that'll work for ya, try it!
auntiebk - Hope the Play It Again Sports works out for you. Yes, they gave me cash. That I didn't have a problem with. I would have liked more...but still.
Today I did an hour on the Wii of balance games. Tomorrow I'll take the xtremepump class. Didn't even know that there was a zumba fitness game for the Wii. That might be interesting. I wanted to take a zumba class, but for me I need a small class to start out, I'm so uncoordinated. Let me know what you find out, OK?
Hey Kandy and Diva! You've come to the right place.
Hope everyone has a wonderful evening and day tomorrow.

Happy New Year Anyone have any liposuction tools? ......
Rebel0 -
:drinker: :drinker: :drinker: today is our Isagenix cleanse day so we're taking it easy....chores, errands, dogs to the dog park, laundry, funny movie
:flowerforyou: Rebel, it is so good to hear from you again......I've missed you
:flowerforyou: Jane, welcome to the thread......have you tried yoga or water aerobics for exercise.....they're good exercise without taxing your knees and they don't feel so much like exercise
:flowerforyou: Karlene, having your house to yourself again must feel great.......I wish your parents a safe trip home....the only person I feel comfortable with in my house is my husband....he accepts all my "crazy" behavior and lets me be me.
:flowerforyou: viv, I read somewhere that many people actual hit their computers out of frustration.....losing a great post would be one of the biggest reasons to be angry at your computer....stay positive anyway
:flowerforyou: Cindy, good luck on finding new shoes for walking...there's nothing like good shoes to give you a spring in your step
:flowerforyou: Alice, doing some walking exercise at bedtime is one of my favorites
:flowerforyou: kc, take it one day at a time and don't let your family get you down
:flowerforyou: boubat, welcome to the group......read this thread every day and you'll find the encouragement you're looking for....we all started somewhere and some of us had to start more than once
:flowerforyou: Faye, how wonderful that you have a 16 year old grandchild that brings you joy.....so many teenagers are hard to get along with
:flowerforyou: Darlis, good luck to you.....one of the hardest lessons for me to learn was how to politely refuse food that I knew wasn't healthy for me and it's especially hard to do that when the cook is your mom
:flowerforyou: Birdie, you explain One Day at a Time so well......it is such an important approach to life
:flowerforyou: Julie, talking instead of eating is such a great way to deal with a holiday party.......I'm glad that there are stars on your calendar
:flowerforyou: Amanda, I'm glad you're feeling better....my weight now is lower than my original goal...I kept modifying my goal as I realized that losing a few more pounds would look and feel great...keep us posted about your surgery
:flowerforyou: Barbara, it's not as cold here as it is where you are but even so, I'm staying in more....we took a 10 minute walk this morning and that was long enough
:flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: Kandy and Diva, welcome......I hope we'll get to know you better
:flowerforyou: Michelle, you are so right about giving food to people who can use it.....when I cleaned out the last of the foods at my house that I wouldn't be eating (pasta, processed foods, baking supplies) I gave them to a young couple living on very limited funds and they were ecstatic.
:flowerforyou: my 30 minutes allowed at the computer are done so now I need to get up and get moving.

I had to skim a bit as I'm supposed to go the store for the weekly groceries.
Viv - if you want to have a serious go at running, it's very important to have good fitting running shoes. The running stores have people and equipment to evaluate your running gait and get you in a good shoe for you that will minimize injuries.
Likewise to Amanda- a good bike fit is important too. I know I was having knee issues with my first bike before I got a bike fit.
Does anyone here use a FitBit? I bought one with my Christmas money and when it came, I realized it wasn't what I was expecting and it wasn't going to work for me. (1) It doesn't work in the water so no swim workouts would be recorded and (2) it doesn't work with road cycling because it's just an accelerometer and has no other sensors. (So it thinks you are running really, really fast when you bike.) But for someone who wants to evaluate their sleep and count their steps and does workouts the involve mostly running, walking or otherwise stepping, I think it would work quite well.
I know a lot of people love theirs. But it's not going to do enough for me over what my current pedometer does (that I'd still have to keep wearing because it's tied to a program at work where you earn $$ for the steps you take). I thought I was buying the BodyMedia FIT when I ordered it. I guess next time I should pay better attention. :indifferent:0 -
Saving my spot,
I'm having trouble with posting for some reason. I type for a while and then all of a sudden poof, everything is missing?
Anyway I have recorded my weight (gain). I'll be back later.

My BIL sent this to me this morning. I thought y'all would enjoy it too

GOOD Morning Ladies....thanks for all the prayers and advice...and yes, a very good morning. I was careful yesterday but still ate the veggies, baked chicken and salad and still came in 65 cal. UNDER for the day. WOOHOO!! Lots of water today because even though I managed the calories, the sodium was too high. I am at work so only brief for now....just wanted to check in! Hope you all have a blessed day!0

Well I changed my ticker. Time to own up to the last 2 weeks of indulgence. My goals for January are to drink less alchohol, exercise more - at least 5 times per week and stop mindless eating and snacking after supper.
I joined the 28 day boot camp on Sparkspeople today. You do 10 minutes of an execise video every day and 30 minutes of cardio 5 days per week. After 10 minutes I was really perspiring. I am way out of shape and now have to admit I haven't been doing any exercise at all.
Best thing about this boot camp is that it is free on Sparkspeople.com. Anyone can fit 10 minutes into their day and I think I will do the 30 minutes of cardio while I watch the news after supper each night.
2011 is the year I must stop making excuses and get at it. -I have a closet full of beautful clothes I can't fit into. - 25 pounds will make me happy. I will just take 5 pounds at a time. My goal is to drop 10 by February 18 when I leave for Florida.
Happy New Year - new beginning - to everyone
smwert0 -
Good morning ladies. I will begin my January tomorrow. One last day with DH around the house so I won't be too good today. I have set some serious exercise goals for January. Yesterday I did 50 squats 50 crunches and 5 pushups. I am going to increas the pushups until I can do 20 at a time. I plan on spending 3 hours a day 5 days a week on the treadmill so I should be getting in a minimum of 10 miles a day. Tomorrow I start back to the clean eating. I am really looking forward to the detoxing.
Welcome to all the newbies.
Reb so glad to see you back I missed you.
Barbiecat it has been too cold for me to take Bodi out. We play real hard in the house.
Amanda I am glad you are feeling better.
Thats all I can remember right now. I will check back later.0 -
Today my GF called. It is the first week of her official retirement! She & I are going walking at 3 today. Oh, it is going to be so nice to have a walking partner!
She is a little uncertain about this whole retirement thing but I think she will like it, eventually!

:flowerforyou: Popping in to say HI, will have to read later.
Hoping all of you had a good Holiday Season....and we are all off and running in this new year...

Morning all,
Just popped in to say a quick hello. Tax time is upon me, cleaning out the files on my new years office purge and then I will be ready to tackle payroll summaries, the new federal filing rules, and tax summaries.
Are any of you familiar with HSA s. We just started them and I am just not all that familiar with the ins and outs.
Back to work, after that back to working out.
Here's to a successful brand new year for us all. :drinker: (that's a cup of water) Alice0 -
Alice,
It's been awhile since I worked with HSAs and I know the rules have changed with healthcare reform. Wish I could help! Basically with an HSA the money comes out of payroll BEFORE you calculate taxes. When spent it has to be for medical necessities. When I was doing payroll all I had to do was take the money out, deposit it with our health insurance company, they took care of the spending part. If you use a payroll computer program there should be an area for this......before tax payroll deductions.
Hope that helped a little.0 -
Hope your all having a good day!
 Barbie--- I am going to try Aqua Aerobics we have a indoor pool here in my community and it costs nothing!!! so I can't come up with any excuse not to do it LOL
 Michele---- I love Quarter Horses. We have 3 QH's and 1 paint. They are my life and my kids. Along with my two labradors
I really want to try and walk my dogs further but it is so darn cold out !!! Pluse it does not help that I have exercise induced asthma which really sucks:sad: I very excited to get to the pool and see how that works out. Springtime I will be riding again so I really look forward to warmer days.

:flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: Hello Ladies and Happy January!
Well..here I am again..on a New Year's Journey to a better me...
It's great to read all the posts again..haven't had time to keep up with all of them lately. Just trying to get back "in the groove"..it's so much easier with all the rich foods gone!
Welcome -Jane, Darlis, Candy? and Diva..hope I have those right. (don't know about the rest of you but I have a Holiday Fog-Over)
Amanda..I am so sorry you have Bronchitis..I had 2 rounds of that in November and December...It's rough!
Robin-my DH has gone back to work today and it's easier to keep up with this eating when they aren't around. Mine had the flu from Thursday before Christmas untill this past Friday AND was on vacation. Whew! He had some cabinet people in here two days. We built our house in "99 and the cabinets, in the Master Bath, finish hadn't stayed the way they should so he worked out a deal with the cabinet people and replaced them. I had a 3 man work crew in here 2 days on top of Holiday Mess and a sick husband. :noway: Needless to say I was stressed! THEN, he decides he can't sit still any longer and all the Christmas deco HAS to come down. The man is up putting decorations in totes with a fever. :noway: :noway: What do you do with a guy like that?
Birdie was glad to read your posts...you are such an uplift.
Barbie- thanks for re-starting our posts for the year.
Rebel--I believe you wanted liposuction tools??? Let me know if there are volunteers.
Mimi -Veggie queen- VEGGIES VEGGIES Veggoes for me too::bigsmile:
Jeannie- am so sorry you had sickness too..:flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:
Michele- I always read your posts...you are a busy girl!:flowerforyou:
Wizzy-I lost a post too the end of December. I barely had time to do it once and I just threw up my hands and said, "forget it."
I've probably left someone out...I'll try to "get you" next time:blushing:
I read all your posts and all of you help me.:flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:0 -
Day 3 and made the morning exercise including mat work, good breakfast, healthy lunch, good walk with Joe and the pups even tho it wasn't quite 20 degrees... but then splat
beer for dinner, bad choice, trail mix, and home made toffee, and don't feel like going to Zumba class, surprise!
Funny how while green vegs make me feel good and strong, sugar and cookies make me feel sick and weak, yet still I put them in!
Will hit the hay and get up early tomorrow to get the ironing AND exercise AND mat work in before this year's first work day. . .
Wish me luck.
As for HSAs, no experience from the employer's perspective, but from the user's, it took me 3 days to sort out all the receipts and submit claims to reconcile our 2009 and 2010 HSA accounts. This year will be different, I will NOT procrastinate!
Warm hugs to all,0 -
Barbara- I hope to be a size 10--eventually too all the sweets drag us down...that's for sure!0
-
Barbara and Lynn...best of luck on the size 10.....I would love to be that size someday, but someone would have to revive my hubby....I was a 14 when we got married and a 22/24 now....he has never seen me that small.
However.....proud to post a 2 lb loss so far, and I get to start some exercise tomorrow!!!!
Wow to all you gals, this is a active group and I certainly see how you inspire each other! You have all certainly been an inspiration to me and not always with your successes. It's great to see those back who have slipped a bit and yet come back determined. That is a success to me!!! I toast to all of you....even if it is with my last glass of water for the day..LOL..:drinker:0 -
Good evening, everyone. Just popping in to say hi.
I've been doing pretty good today but my son's birthday cake is going to be eaten soon. Luckily it's a very small cake and I don't think there will be any leftovers!
Welcome to our new members!:flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: You'll find loads of support and motivation here!
I also joined the 28 day challenge at Sparkpeople.com. I use a lot of their exercise videos and I really like them. Their website was having some real problems earlier but they seem to have resolved them now. I bet it's all the new people joining!
Well, going to make a cup of tea and relax for a bit. Have a nice night.0 -

Michele thanks for this, where can I find the "undo" tab. I can't see one when I am logged in to mfp.
Viv x0 -
Hi everyone
Just a quickie as I need to get back into the swing of getting ready for work.
Can't believe it is snowing again. Not sure if I'll be able to jog at lunchtime now, might have to go for a walk instead weather permitting.
Catch up with everyone later.
Viv xx0 -
Happy New Year everyone. I've just skimmed through weeks of posts by all of you. I joined mfp right after Thanksgiving and was quite consistent up until people began giving me delicious and decadent, home baked goods for the holidays. I have an uncontrollable sweet tooth. One of you posted about giving up sugar and flour because otherwise there is no control. I feel that way a lot. And every nutritionist, acupuncturist, holistic practitioner says the whites are bad for you. So I gave up logging in to my food diary and posting for these holiday weeks, consciously, not defeatedly. I'm not beating myself up over it, that's just how it was. But I'm back and I am re-inspired by those of you who have mastered the cookie conflict. I probably have to change the weight on my ticker because I'm pretty sure I gained a couple of pounds. Those should come off with my return to mindful eating....plus the sweets are all gone, now.
