Scrimp vs. Splurge -- from a product junkie!!!!

So I love the "Scrimp vs. Splurge" columns they sometimes have in fashion magazines, talking about which beauty products are worth the money and which are just bunk.
Now that I'm on the road so much, I've decided to treat myself to a few new beauty boosts...and I'd love your opinion on what's worth the money!
Anyone want to weigh in on their "can't live without" products -- whether cheapie or expensive?
For me:
Scrimp
* Bonne Bell Lip Smackers are the best! I wear them alone or under lipstick
* Vaseline -- still the best for dry lips and because it's not liquid, I put it in a tiny little jar for traveling and use it for everything -- hands, feet, eye cream, lips, etc.
* Neutrogena moistureizers -- read the reviews on Consumer Reports which said these ones with Retinol are just as good, if not better than, the super expensive creams
* Bath products -- I make all my own, using various combinations of honey, milk, lavender oil, baking soda, olive oil, cornstarch, oatmeal, or whatever else I have on hand. I love that they are all-natural and feel sooooo good!
* Burts Bees Orange Wax lotion -- LOVE the smell and the feel of this lotion
Splurge:
* I'm looking at the T3 Bespoke hair dryer but it's $300!!!! Is that really worth the money?
* Fekkai Technician shampoo and conditioner -- $35 each and worth every penny
* Nars Monoi shimmery body oil -- I love this and it makes my skin glowy!
* Perfume -- Worth the money, to me
* Christian Dior and/ or Vincent Longo mascara -- LOVE both of these!

Neutrogena Sesame oil is a great body moisturizer - I smooth it right after a bath, and it can be used IN the bath or as a massage oil.
Pricey (for me) at $9 12 ounce bottle but I use it sparingly. Definitely a luxury.0 -
Oh wow! I'm not much of a "product" splurger - I'll shell out $2 for the V06 99 cent shampoo and conditioner any day!
I don't think I own a hairdryer...or a curling iron...takes too much time!
Anyways, my fav "bath" thing is Trader Joe's Citrus Sugar Scrub - smells deeeevine (I would eat it if I could!) I use it after I shave - makes my legs soft and "touchable" :blushing:0 -
a 300.00 dollar hair dryer        now thats a good one!!0

Love this post Wandering - right up my alley!
Splurges...
For hair I LOVE the Aveda products, hands down. I also LOVE the Monoi body oil - the smell is out of this world, and to me, spells summer.
:flowerforyou:
I don't know the dryer - although $300 does sound a bit steep - although I think it might be like a straightener - you need a good one or your hair pays in the long run (not to mention the improved performance day to day!).
I also LOVE the La Roche Posay skin care line - beautiful products. I use the 60spf everyday, and the Cera Lip everday. I've always loved Mac cosmetics, but my new fav is, I'm not kidding, the Sheer Cover (Leeza Gibbons informercial). It does all that it says - my skin looks flawless with this stuff on (and I have lots to cover - dark circles, sun spots, etc).
Scrimps...
Maybelline Full and Soft Mascara is the best I've ever used - and is dirt cheap at $8 a tube. I also love Vaseline for my feet (before bed, followed by a white cotton sport sock) - you don't get much more scrimpy than Vaseline!
Not a beauty product, but I hope my fellow Canadians know what I'm talking about... the Joe Fresh line of clothes at the Superstore is AMAZING!!! (women's, men's and kids). Their yoga wear rivals Lulu Lemon at a fraction of the cost. Their designer used to head up Club Monaco, so the clothes have great style and are DIRT CHEAP!!!
:flowerforyou:0 -
Wandering - do you use the retinol products? I have a precription for some for sun spots, so just wondering what you think of the over the counter products.
Thanks!
:flowerforyou:0 -
Ooooo...would give anything to find a Lululemon substitute! My addiction is killing my wallet...but their stuff is sooooo cute and well, sometimes I will work out just because i'm excited to wear some hot little workout number...so I figure it's money well spent...
I know, Metco, $300 for a hairdryer is ridiculous!
AJCM -- I'm just starting to use the retinol stuff. Nothing has really worked so far on my sun spot, so I'm trying out different options. I've also been using Prevage (definitely falls under the "splurge" category at $100/ bottle) but it has done wonders for my skin and I've had the same bottle for almost a year now so I think the price is worth it.
Oh and in case you haven't noticed, there is nobody better at justifying all this money spent than me!!! I can find an excuse for anything...0 -
When you think about it (I LOVE to justify big purchases  ), spending $300 on a top of the line hair dryer gets less expensive with each year you still own it. I mean, how many times do you normally buy a new hair dryer?! When all else fails, I consider that I just sent a check to our energy company here in Florida, for $582 for the month of July :noway:0
-
Oh Keli - I feel your pain on the air conditioning costs this summer!
We do deserve to treat ourselves though, no? The whole concept of the scrimp vs splurge allows us to spend a little one some things because we saved on others!
Wandering - I don't know if you ever travel to Toronto or Vancouver with business, but you should check out Joe if you come - their yoga wear is awesome! The same pants at Lulu which are over $100 are $29.99.

Splurge:
* I'm looking at the T3 Bespoke hair dryer but it's $300!!!! Is that really worth the money?
No, it isn't-unless you are a hairstylist and/or have weak wrists as more expensive (or rather professional hairdryers) tend to be lighter in weight, but not always. Go for mid-range, and spend the money you save on quality hair products and having a professional cut, color and/or highlight if you do not already.
I was a hairstylist for years and years. Of course, other stylists may disagree with me.0 -
My absolute favorite scrimp is Confess perfume by K Mart...when you can get it. Its an Obsession knock off, but for my body chemistry it smells better. ( I've tried Obsession...) I've worn it for years and had people compliment me on my perfume.
Another scrimp is table sugar, olive oil and perfume for scrubbing those scaly legs in the winter, cheap and feels great!
Ez
PS...Ezzie's( ) favorite splurge is EROS body glide (personal lubricant) 'bout $50 for 8 oz:blushing: :blushing: :blushing:0 -
Scrimp:
Neutrogena Healthy Skin care line
Neurtogena Sunblock
(I was using Clarins before and I my aunt turned me onto Neurtrongena-great product!)
Splurge:
Fragrance-I BVLGARI and Coco Chanel. My new favorite is Lauder's Pleasures delight
Benefit's Dr. Feelgood
Anthropologie -I love their cloths! It is why I keep fit-seriously.0 -
Okay, because I'm too lazy to google right now....what the heck can a $300 hair dryer do that a $20 one can't????? :noway: :noway: I'd better have Farrah/Repunzel hair for $300. :noway: :noway:
Okay..I'll get back in my birdcage & sing....cheep-cheep-cheep!! :laugh:0 -
Here's another splurge -- Amarige de Givenchy at about $45 for 2oz eau de cologne
It's one of those scents that'll get you l4id :smooched: :blushing: FAST. So if you don't want to wind up preggers, don't buy it.
And another scrimp: Patchouli oil at about $4 for .5 oz. Very earthy - I say it smells like sweet dirt. It's like kryptonite to my man. :blushing: :blushing: needless to say I have 3 different bottles. For anyone who doesn't like it that strong, try 'Fresh Patchouli' by Coty. Patchouli top notes with melon/cucumber bottom notes.0 -

Hi
I used to be a BIG skincare/haircare/make-up dept store junkie
BUT since staying home and having my kiddies...I've found so many great inexpensive products
ALL of my make-up is from the drugstore...my fav lines are rimmel and milani....love maybelline mascare but i NEED my shiseido eyelash curler...NO decent substitute
As far as my hair, I like some drugstore shampoo/etc but when I want a good hair day I use my coldwell and bumble and bumble products...
I have an elchemi (sp?) hair dryer....about $80 and has lasted me 10x longer than any dryer I had in the past
I've always been a skincare junkie...have been slathering on $ potions and avoiding the sun since my early 20's
The best investment I made was seeing a cosmetic derm about a year ago
I had a laser treatment to get rid of a few very large/dark (odd shaped freckles on my face)
She put me on the obagi skincare system with a retinoid...
It was $$ but I'm still using the same products almost 10 months later and can replace the products on line and save a ton
If anyone has questions, let me know..I also have some before/after pics of my face I can send off
The change is pretty drastic...

Scrimps:
Biore Pore Unclogging Scrub! Really does the job and makes your skin feel great
Caress and Suave Body Washes (Smell great and super cheap, especially Suave)
Herbal Essences Spray Gel (I have naturally curly hair and it does a GREAT job!)
Almay Mascara (the ones for specific eye colors are great. I get the one for hazel eyes)
I like the Neutrogena products as well as the Garnier Nutritioniste Ultra-Life Moisture Cream
SPLURGES:
ANYTHING at Sephora! I love going shopping there.
I really love the Fresh line of products. I wear the "Lemon Sugar" perfume in the summer.
L'Occitane 30-Day Grape Cure! OMG, I have the shower oil (with grapeseed) and the "Beauty Milk" Feels and smells WONDERFUL! The Honey and Lemon products are great too.
Philosophy Body Washes SMELL Heavenly!0 -
I spend on Bare Minerals foundations for the winter, but just use Almay foundation in the summer. (it's more like a tinted moisturizer)
I have approximately 30 Burt's Bees lip balms all over the house. . .so that's a collective "splurge" but an individual "scrimp". They are the best. I also use their day and nighttime moisturizers.
I splurge on eyebrow threading and manicures (when I can. . .I'm about due) And philosophy "purity" cleanser. And I buy health-food-store style bubble baths, so that's sort of a splurge. I have about ten bottles right now (I like variety and choices.)
My new favorite thing is "hot chocolate scrub" by giovanni. It's semi-expensive, but I would eat it with a spoon if I could. I got a "black toe" spinning this spring, so I've been saving money on pedicures by hiding my hideously deformed toenail.
I have tried many pricey perfumes, and the two that always get compliments are an earthy crunchy "Egyptian Musk" oil from the health food store and "skin musk" from the drugstore. (they both break the bank at about ten dollars a bottle)
Oh, and I buy my "normal" clothes at Joe Fresh and Target in Buffalo (shhh. . .don't tell the Niagara border guards) so that I can continue to feed my lululemon and shakti workout wear addictions. I realized today that my workout outfit cost more than the suit I eloped in. Yikes.:flowerforyou:0 -
I really love the Fresh line of products. I wear the "Lemon Sugar" perfume in the summer.
They broke my heart when they discontinued "chocolate orange". :sad:0 -

Kim - let's talk girl - my face has about 3 dark spots, which I feel I have to cover with makeup - they are that dark!!! Can you tell me about the laser treatment? My derm did recommend a retinoid product that is blended with vitamin C. She never mentioned the laser though! I would LOVE to see B&A pics.

Vivia - do you really not like Joe yoga??? They make a line that has fabrication similar to Lulu... if you're not feeling it, I can see that... but maybe try it!!! (plus Joe gives you a little boost because they size the clothes a little larger so one can buy a 6 when one is really an 8...)

You know, I actually haven't tried them. I will next time I'm there. The "*kitten* powers" of Lulu are so profound, though. . .but so are the powers of the amount of squats, yoga and spinning I've been doing lately. . . so maybe I can branch out and save $ss. . . .and I love the whole "downsizing" trend. (oh the vanity. . .) I have everything from a 2 to a 6 in my closet right now. (and in dresses a few 8s and 10s).0 -

Oh yeah, check them out for sure!!! I'm sold.
Hahaha!!! I almost bought a Liz Claiborne dress that I didn't really like because it was a 4!!! What a loser I am... I was just so stunned to see that number after wearing 12's and 14's after I had my daughter... I still cringe a bit in Jacob Boutique as I'm an 8 in their dress trouser but I think that is more realistic (the 6's at the Gap, Old Navy, Banana Rep and Joe are really just ploys to make me feel good - I know it - but I still like it!!!).

Brown spots:
AJ - "Immortelle" skin care products by L'Occitane will erase your brown age spots. Go to their website and read about it. It is made from a flower that keeps its color forever even after dried. Amazing products.
I am L'Occitane obsessed. There. I've said it. I am powerless over just about anything L'Occitane, and now I won't buy anything else.
Definitely falls into the "Splurge" category- but all organic, no added chemicals, all are made with Earth-sensitivity and with a conscience. Their suppliers are many times families in business for generations, and women who are given money by L'Occitane to continue, or expand their businesses. Their packaging has Braille on it.
But I can quit anytime I want.

Would love to see before and after pix as well. I'm due for a dermatologist appointment, but haven't been in town long enough to make one. Must make it a priority! I've noticed a dark spot getting darker and lots of little fine lines creeping up. I've actually never been to a dermatologist and have been nervous to go because (this being So. California) they are all plastic surgery obsessed and I don't want to go to someone who tries to make me feel bad I won't get Botox or who sells me an expensive line of products.
It's hard to find a good one!0 -
And another scrimp: Patchouli oil at about $4 for .5 oz.
I Patchouli. I think the Rennassance Faire was the last time I bought it.0 -
Hi
Here is a link with pics...not the best pics, but I tried to pick ones that would show off my face
http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=9EaM2TRm4bdM&emid=sharview&linkid=link4
The first 2 are from this past October (pre-MFP and derm)
You can see the few VERY dark/big freckles on my nose and under my eye..texture is sort of rough looking
I went to a derm in Nov and paid $350 to treat 4 spots (the cost was per spot or for the entire face) for a laser treatment...the deal is though, the darker the spot the better/quicker it responds
Within a few days the dark spots peeled off and were GONE
I got so hooked I went back 4 more times to have lighter freckles on my face removed but was very disappointed with the results..they faded marginally....it added up
The derm also started me on the obagi skincare system to fade dark spots, prevent aging (she said the combination of the system and retinoid would do what the laser did, but it would take about 1yr for the dark spots to disappear)
The cost was about $350 for the entire system and retinoid (which I am still using now...lasted 10+mnths)
I also researched on line (through ebay or skinstore, skinwest) and could have gotten all the pieces for about $250
I don't think that's TOO bad for a years worth of products that work!
I also don't think you need the entire system....I would focus on the heavy duty products and skip the cleanser/toner and s/s (probably buy drug store for a lot less)
The pic in black with my mom and Ava are was from x-mas...I look a little spacy tired and hot (end of a long day) I was using the system for about 1 month
The pic outside with the kids (white t-shirt) was from this past summer...was using the entire line for about 8/9 mnths
The derm totally tried to get me to try botox but I refused and she let it go
So, if u plan on going I think you just need to be firm on what you want and what you are willing to spend and how far you will go
Hope all this made sense
Let me know if u have any questions!

I love this topic! It's fun to be a girl!
Scrimp:
~Vaseline unscented intensive rescue body lotion
~Nivea body oil (great just out of the shower with a light, fresh scent)
~Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew overnight regenerating cream
~Garnier Nutritioniste Ultra Lift eye cream
~Cover Girl Lash Blast mascara (I used Diorshow Black before, and I like this more...the brush is great)
~Pantene shampoo and conditioner
Splurge:
~shu uemura eyelash curler
~Chi flat iron
~T3 hairdryer.... worth the money if you have very thick hair like me... i used to go through 2 inexpensive hair dryers per year... i have had this one for 4 years now, and no problems with it... it's very light weight and cuts down my drying time a bit
~philosophy purity cleanser and hope in a jar moisturizer
~mac, clinique, and nars lip glosses
~smashbox jet set eyeliner0 -
I have an unhealthy product obsession. When I walk in to my Sephora, they all know me by name. And I have a friend at the Nars counter at my Neiman Marcus just from going in there so much. He calls me whenever they get new products that would go with my coloring.
My all-time favorites, by brand--
Smashbox:
-Photofinish. I absolutely cannot live without this. It is amazing.
-Photo Op. I have never seen another product like this.
-Soft lights bronzer. I HATE shimmery bronzers and that seems to be all thats out there. This is pure matte and works perfectly for contouring my cheekbones (to make me look slimmer!).
-Eye-liner pallet. I ONLY use cream eye liners and this is the very best. And it will not dry out and it will last for years. I have tried the waterproof jet-set and I do not like the formula as much.
-Peta Pallets: these are such soft, buttery powders. I love them for every-day looks. I have both!
-Bionic Mascara. This is fairly new but it works GREAT. I am very picky with mascara (I HATE Diorshow. Its clumpy and looks more trashy than classy), and this is my every-day pick!
-Concealer stick. I have zits but no one can tell with this product!
Nars:
-Lipstick. I have about twelve shades and this is by far my favorite formula ever.
-Lip gloss. See comment above.
-Eye shadow duos. I have never seen better duos and formulas for light, every day looks then Nars.
-Blush. Every single woman out there should own Orgasm. It is by far the most universally flattering shade and works in almost every single color combination.
Benefit:
-BadGal Lash mascara. This is the best for big, super full lashes.
Too-Faced:
-Kabuki Brush. This is the best bang for your buck at $29. It is super soft and the fibers do not hold product in like a lot of natural-bristled brushes.
Lorac:
-Croc pallet. I just love this pallet of creamy metallic shades! It can be used to achieve just about any look, including Hillary Duff's super smoked out eye makeup.
Michael Kors:
-Leg Shine. Who knew you could actually contour your legs into looking firmer and leaner? This takes a little practice and patience to get the hang of, but once you do, it is the best product for your legs.
Urban Decay:
-Primer Potion. If you have not heard of the wonders this product brings, you probably should not be reading this post. I do very dramatic, colorful eye make up and nothing holds it on better than this. Its the best. Period.
-Delux Shadows: If you are into really bright colors like me, this is one of the best formulas around. The colors blend with almost no effort.
Just a few other tips:
-My brushes are a mix of Sephora brand, Clinique, and Smashbox with a few random Urban Decays and the Too-Faced kabuki. I also have the brushes from the Bare Minerals make up. I hate those brushes. They are cheaply made and provide no coverage and very little color pay off.
-Do NOT waste your time or money on Bare Minerals foundation. Anything in Smashbox works so much better and will actually stay on your face. I don't understand the rage of all of this because sure it may look good for like five minutes, but then it just melts away, even with Photofinish.
-MAC eye color is a waste of your money. You can achieve much better results with a stronger color pay off from other brands, such as Urban Decay. And don't even think about trying MAC Lipglass. Disgusting.
Money Saving tricks:
-I cannot stress the value of pallets enough! Buy in sets.
-Also, as you can probably tell, Smashbox is basically my favorite brand. If you are new or you are building your collection, Nordstrom puts out really great "Glamboxes" every couple of months. These are usually $60-$70 but are a GREAT value. I LOVE THESE. I also recently fell in love with the new Foundation set found at Sephora. It is the best.
-If you are unsure of a color and want to try the look without spending a lot of money, head to the Sephora counter. These products are what you pay for: they are better then drugstore crap but they are not spectacular. They are great for trying those looks, though. And my friend swears by their pressed mineral powder.
The only product worth buying at the drugstore is Chapstick. The rest of it (including every Covergirl, Almay, and Revlon product) is not worth your money. In the world of make up, there is a distinct difference in quality and you should never sacrifice your face to something less then stellar. Department store make up may be expensive, but it is a better investment. After all, aren't we on this site to look and feel great?!
I know this post is long, but I could literally talk about products forever! Hope this helps!0
