Elevator Etiquette

So this morning at work I was getting on the elevator from the 5th floor down to the 1st to get breakfast. The elevator was coming from the 6th floor so I naturally assumed someone was on it. I step back thinking this person might want to get off on the 5th floor where I was. So I'm waiting and the door finally opens, I wait a few seconds more and realize this gentleman is not getting off on this floor. Okay, so I step forward thinking he would realize I'm getting on the elevator and step back allowing me room to enter the elevator. This man's like a stone. Stands right in front of the elevator door, doesn't move an inch and expects me to walk around him to get on. He's the only one on this elevator and refuses to move so that I can get on without having to manuever my way around him. What kind of @$$hole does that. If I'm the only person on the elevator, I'll move to the back of it to allow others to get on as we go through the floors. So I was curious what your elevator etiquitte is. If you are the only person on the elevator, do you stand in the front up by the door and wait for your floor not caring who needs to get on or off or do you move to the back in case other people need to get on or off at other floors?

I would have at least stepped to the side! Even if he had issues and was worried about being caught behind a bunch of people in the back, he could have moved a little. Weird

I just step in and lean a shoulder into them if it is a guy. I work in NYC a lot and have to play the elevator game often. If they don't like it I just tell them to be smart enough to move...

I probably would have insisted he get out of my way so I can get on the elevator comfortably. I would have held the elevator door until he moved.

I stand in a corner. If someone's in my way, I ask them to move, please.

I'm passive aggressive. I'd stand in front of the sensor so the door couldn't close and just stare at the guy.

Brush shoulders with him, and ask him if he even lifts.

I just spent the last 4 days on a business trip and very single time the people would move. Whoever is closest to the buttons pushes them for others.

That's the etiquette in my experience.

As door starts to close, turn around, stick *kitten* in the doorway, *fart* - Have a nice day!

Found myself compelled to check out the link... OK, this was funny! Wouldn't it be grand to have something similar to this prerecorded and ready to go in moments like this!

As a daily elevator user myself (of the Symphony Towers none-the-less!), I have noticed early mornings can be a little difficult for riders of "age", they tend to walk in their own world then; this might have been the case for this fellow and you should just let it go and move on with your day. Now if it was a regular thing for this patron, I'd say queue up the Ludacris and go at it!

Don't let the little things set your day... just smile and be happy (you will have less gray hair and frown lines to boot!).

    :-)

When I take an elevator I normally stand against a side wall, not directly in front of the door... but close enough that I won't be blocked in

Real Men don't take elevators....they take stairs.

You weren't dealing with a man there.

I live in a high-rise, so I've seen all the violations. At one point I was considering writing up the elevator etiquette rules and posting it by the lobby, but I doubt anyone would read past the title, so I have just accepted the fact that people can be stupid and rude and there is nothing I can do about it. The situation you described doesn't happen too often, it usually happens with teens who have their face glued to their phones as I slide by. But I am not surprised this rude behaviour came from an adult. I have seen a few who thought it made more sense to get on the elevator before people got off.

I would have done the "excuse me" route and then banged him up with my bags by turning toward a wall.

It irks me to no end in the building I'm in that at the elevator for the parking garage people stand right in front of the elevator door waiting to get on and then TRY TO WALK ON WHILE YOU ARE WALKING OUT.

Those people always get a snarky "EXCUSE ME!" or "EXCUSE US!" since my husband and I ride together.

I deal with that at my building all the time. My biggest elevator pet peeve is this, though--

I get on at the tenth floor, and intend on getting off at the ground floor.
Once the elevator gets there, I try to get off, but then there's always at least one person blocking my way off.

Seriously, do they think there couldn't POSSIBLY be someone on the elevator wanting to get off? What's even worse is when they don't pay attention and try to get on at the same time I'm trying to get out. Wait your freaking turn...

This is similar to when people stop at the top or bottom of an escalator or set of stairs to tie their shoes or answer their cell phone or look through their bag for something, completely oblivious to the fact that they are impeding the progress of oncoming traffic. I want to scream at these people "What planet are you from because you're obviously new to this one!"

Also, when you're on one of those lame aisles at the grocery store that have the support posts right in the middle, and you expect people to be normal and GTFO of the way, but they don't ... This happened to met in the frozen foods section once. I very politely said "Excuse me," but this particularly dumb and rude woman who had her shopping cart taking up one side of the aisle and the open freezer door taking up the other side decided to ignore me, so I pushed past her. She told me to watch where I was going. I told her not to park her shopping cart in the middle of the freaking aisle next time. It was a pleasant exchange that reminded me why I avoid people in general.

There is no etiquette when it come to my apartment.

I remember having my bike with me, plus mail and a grocery bag while heading to the elevator. One of the tenants had gotten on the elevator knowing fully well I was behind him. He pressed the closed button not wanting me to get in. There's plenty of space in the elevator. He was just plane rude. That happens a lot here in DC.

Wow. I would think that would just be a human etiquette thing.

You know, "the world doesn't revolve around you and people shouldn't have to just watch out for you"

But hey, what do I know. I guess we're just pushovers.

Sounds to me like he was just spacing out on something and not thinking about where he was.

    Best advice ever.

Maybe he was having a bad morning and was totally zoning out and didn't realize real life was going on. Or maybe he's just an a**hole.

Just say " excuse me I don't wan to have to graze the door or you to get in" .

Or you could turn twords him as you squeeze in and make a really phlegm-filled cough...make him think twice.
