Jeannie: I agree about soup on cold wintry days. I always have to make vegetable beef soup for the first real snow. I just remember having that a lot as a child and it makes me happy!

    Hi Cindy and other!
yes you can list under cleaning..when going under the excercise icon put cleaning in your search engine window.

It's definitely burning calories and very long at it is cardio.

Soup--hmm Jeannie. that sounds good.:flowerforyou: :drinker: :drinker:

Robin--feel better and I hope your interview is productive for you:flowerforyou:

Hmmmm- there was someone else...I think my late night is affecting my memory..again...I am batting 0 here and it isn't even baseball season.

    Ok..I'll stop again for now...because I am rambling:bigsmile:

    I'll pop back in later....

      even though the temperature was above freezing overnight, our driveway and the steep road in front of our house were glare ice and even DH who learned to drive on icy roads in Ohio, said it was too dangerous even for him to drive so I missed my line dance class......so I had my own class here......I had the step sheet and a YouTube video of the new dance that was being taught so I could make an effort to teach it to myself so I won't be so far behind next week.

   by 2 PM the ice had melted enough so we could go to the dog park and give the girls a chance to run and play and then we ran our errands including picking up the prescription for the prep for colonoscopy.:grumble:

 now we're in for the rest of the day and night and hoping that it will stay warm enough to have no ice tomorrow morning when I go to line dance.

:flowerforyou: I don't do a lot of housecleaning but when i do, I always count it as exercise just like walking up and down the hall and dancing and jogging in front of the TV and working in the yard and anything else that burns calories......not all exercise has to be the classic stuff workouts like you do at the gym or exercise class
remember "if you're movin' you're losin'

 Lynn, I was awake in the middle of the night, too, so I read my book for awhile until I got sleepy again

:flowerforyou: Robin, good luck on your job interview

:flowerforyou: Kathy from NJ, we lived in New Jersey when I was in high school and I remember walking to school in deep snow.......the dog used to bury bones in the snow in the back yard and be surprised to find them when the snow melted in the spring.......I agree with the others that soup or stew is a good cold weather comfort food (macaroni and cheese would be good, too, except for all the fat and simple carbs   )

The worst part of the colonoscopy is the prep! (You've probably heard that before.)

I just got back from seeing a sports medicine doctor. He thinks I've just got scar tissue and I just need to work through it with exercise and not be afraid of the pain. So he basically wants me to keep doing what I was doing while training for my Ironman up until the part where everything started falling apart (Sept) and I really backed off.

So I'm back to full exercising. Or at least I'm going to start that process. I won't jump into a full load tomorrow! But I am going swimming today, will try to run tomorrow or Friday and will bike on Sat. and figure skate on Sunday and see what happens.

    Evening all,

Mac, glad to hear you have the OK for more strenuous work outs. It is hard to picture you sitting still.

RJ, how dod the interview go?

Barbie, the prep is not that bad if you carefully follow the instructions. My sister did not do this and had a very unpleasant time.
I was much more careful and really did not find it too much of an inconvience. I did drink water as long as it was allowed.

I too believe in applied exercise. I do not include a light cleaning, I do include washing and buffing the hardwood floor in the great room. I do include hauling firewood if I am filling the rack. I do include heavy farm and garden work. Hauling wood chips for mulch and the like. I am so fortunate to still be able to lift, move and do hard physical work. I workout every day, to keep my physical abilities, and improve my mental atitude.

Amanda, you are a continuing inspiration. I hope the surgery plans work out for the best. I am so glad to hear the little ones are doing so well.

I agree with you all on soup as a comfort food. I adore soup of all varieties. The more vegetables the better.

Tonights dinner was tuna steak 3oz., Sweet potato med. baked, steamed italian vegetables 1.50cups, 1 Roma tomato cross sliced ,fannedand broiled, 2 slices lemon,1/2 pat butter, 2oz. Alice white chardonay, and a large glass of water. I feel so spoiled! I do so love to cook! I also do love to eat what I cook, but it need not be fattening

On that note I am off for my night rounds and then off to the land of nod. My very best wishes and thoughts to all of you I have not mentioned, I value each and everyone of you! Onward and upward, Alice

It is just way too cold for my taste. Our pipes froze today, but we just finally got the water working again. I want to see double digits on the thermometer again! Otherwise, I'm fine here, and still pegging along. Hope all of you are having a good day.

I like chili as comfort food. You can health it up using ground turkey or just stick with the beans. The problem is not making corn bread to go with it.

Watching the weather channel, I'm astounded at the weather that some of you are having. I grew up in NJ and remember only a few sporadic winters that were this bad. I also, couldn't help but wonder how the early settlers managed in colonial times....
And I won't mention what kind of weather we've been having here in SoCal -- since you are all new friends, I don't want to alienate myself.

Robin, hope that interview goes well. Sending positive vibes your way.

I'm tired. I've been going to bed waaay too late every night. So I'm keeping it short in hopes that I can finish up my paperwork and head for bed. Came in under calories tonight but no energy to exercise.

    Hi all

:flowerforyou: Robin hope you are feeling much better and good luck with the interview

:flowerforyou: Lynn I walk more than run   but I am getting there (very slowly) I've managed to jog/walk at lunchtime twice this week and I'll definitely be running tomorrow, so might have a walk at lunchtime, take it easy a bit. Think I might have lost another llb but I'll know for certain on Saturday morning weigh in.

:frown: I am so fed up with this cold weather, roll on spring, these dark damp days are so depressing.

:flowerforyou: Sorry this is all I have time for this morning, time is getting on, take care everyone, and take care all those who are "snowed in"

    Hello All,

By the time I submit this post, it will be the start of Thursday--a very special day--January 13th is my mom's 95th birthday!!!! You all get to listen to my ramblings, in celebration of her special day.

Wednesday I took her to the DMV where she told them she would trade in her driver's license for a state-issued ID card. Sort of a moot point, as she has not driven in the past few years--says she would be afraid to--but mentally, she is certainly sharp enough to do so.

She still cooks all the meals for herself and my dad, and keeps track of medications for both of them. She continues to do some form of exercise every day, including swimming or walking in the pool 3 - 5 days a week. She also continues to take care of all their day-to-day financial activities. She knows I am available to help with anything she doesn't want to deal with, and since it is sometimes difficult for her to understand strangers on the phone, she has me make some phone calls on her behalf.

The one duty she has surrendered to me permanently is shopping. We commiserate on the phone, and then I go out and get whatever is required.

Later today, I will go and pick up her and my dad and return to my home, where we will all have dinner and a quiet celebration. When the uncertainty of winter weather is no longer a factor, she has agreed (FINALLY) that I can put together a birthday celebration for her. The logistics will include figuring out how to get as much of her family from Canada as possible to come down for it.

For MANY years, we were always the ones travelling north. Now it is time for the road to be driven in the other direction. The biggest challenge for me will be trying to find a way to get mom's two remaining sisters (both younger) down here. I will be enlisting the help of my cousins (their children) to make this possible.

Mom has lived an interesting life. After a stint in the Women's Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force, she HITCHHIKED with a fellow female veteran from Vancouver, BC to San Francisco, CA. Eventually, she decided to relocate permanently to the USA, spending time in Alaska, and eventually settling in Western Washington, where she met my dad. She and a roommate were taking ground school training to get pilot licenses, and my dad was in the class, putting in some required time to maintain his active license. He learned to fly in the Navy.

Originally, dad was dating her roommate, but one day he showed up when the roommate was out of town, and when my mom told him she was not in, he replied "I know. I came to see YOU!!" They went ice skating on their first date, and were married within a couple of years. I showed up a couple of years later, and the rest is history......

Knowing how many people younger than me have already lost their mothers, I feel very fortunate to celebrate another birthday with her. To have both my parents at my age (and THEIRS) is really pretty amazing.

Well, it is late. "Tomorrow" is already here, so Happy Birthday Mom!!!

If you are living in an area that is experiencing the worst of our winter weather, I hope you are keeping safe and warm. We have pretty much dodged the weather bullet here. There was a lot of prognosticating about snow and freezing rain, but the snow was almost non-existent, and the freezing rain only fell in a limited area on Tuesday evening. By the time the Wednesday commute time was over, it was way above freezing and what problems existed were pretty much melted.

The real weather appeared where it always does. Those in the Columbia River Gorge ended up with several inches of snow and plenty of ice on the freeway. No winter event in the Gorge would be complete without at least one jackknifed truck, so they had that too. There was also an unfortunate driver in a four wheel drive who slid off the freeway and down and embankment and was stuck in his car, (whicg was wedged in a tree and a few feet above the ground) waiting for the tow truck to arrive. Lucky him--he couldn't escape the tv crew that was filming weather-related news in the area.

So these journalistic geniuses stuck a microphone in front of him and asked "What happened?" It would have been poetic justice if the guy had responded, "What the H3LL do you THINK happened?" or perhaps "Well driving on the freeway in a blinding snowstorm with 40 m.p.h. winds was far too boring for me, so I decided to make it more interesting and try an alternate route!!!"

That didn't happen, of course, or the clip would be all over the internet by now!!! LOL

    We love chili too.

We like it served over brown rice as an alternative to cornbread. Oh, I do love the "White Chicken Chili" recipe I found. I'll post it later if any of you want to try it.

I need to go and get my drivers license renewed today or tomorrow. I'll be able to get it for 8 years this time. Basically its just the eye test and road signs.

    Well, I'll check back later.

Happy New Year!! I have been AWOL since September. Once school started (we homeschool) my routine just hasn't been what it was. I gained about 7 pounds over the last 4 months and I am ready to get busy. I tried to avoid BP meds for all these years, but it caught up with me and I'm now taking some meds for BP. But the Doc is hopeful that with losing weight and exercising I will be able to get off of them in time. After my son's wedding in SC the middle of Dec. and my Dad's homegoing on Christmas Eve, it has been a hectic month. It's good to be back home to some normalcy. I miss my Dad, but with Alzheimer's, he didn't have a very promising future. He died peacefully and I know he is happy to be home in Heaven! Now I am trying to find ways to be a help and encouragement to my Mom. I'm sure there are many new MYP's, but I noticed several of the mainstays as well. I look forward to visiting throughout the day to keep up with my recording. Have a wonderful day!!:flowerforyou:

Catching up with posts before I head out to get rid of my "skunk head" as I call it. Some days I wish I had never started to color my hair. It just grows so darn fast it seems like I am always getting my roots done. Maybe one day I'll cut about a foot of it off and go grey. I'm hoping it will go all white and then I will be happy with it; I don't like the white around the edges, two-toned in the middle mess that I now have. :ohwell:

Barb (weaklink) - I so enjoyed hearing about your mom. She sounds a lot like my mom, except mine just made it to 89 but she too did all her own finances and most of the day to day stuff. Dad go the longevity award, he was a couple weeks short of 98 when he died in his sleep - at home. I too want to do as well as my parents. It's a lofty goal and losing the weight is an integral part of achieving it. The party you are planning sounds wonderful! We had a big one for Mom on her last bday and she loved it.

It appears that we Floridians are the only ones that didn't get at least a few flakes of snow out of this last storm. I read where even Hawaii got a few flakes! :noway: I am also happy to report that my veggies are doing well under their cold frames. I have arugula, lettuce and onions that are thriving. I have been eating arugula every day for a couple weeks now. My only failure was the spinach. :grumble: I planted a whole 8x4 bed with spinach and only had 4 seeds sprout. Then I did some internet research and put a packet of seeds in a zip lock bag with a damp paper towel in the fridge for two weeks. This is supposed to help them sprout in a warmer climate. I took them out and planted them over a week ago and nothing..... Any good spinach growers on our group? I'd love some suggestions. BTW, I didn't have them under a cold frame as they like cool/coldish weather, so I don't think that was it.

I have been fighting the dreaded night time eating thing. I have decided that I need to do more in the evening to keep myself occupied. This weekend I am going to go get some yarn and a new pattern - I never did find the one around here that I wanted to use to knit the GGS a receiving blanket - and get busy knitting. I also have a 1,000 piece puzzle started, Hopefully these two activities will help.

It is always good to hear from old friends who haven't posted in a while. We certainly do miss people when the go missing for a while. So a big welcome back to those who have found us again for 2011.

Barb - Happy Birthday to your Mom! She sounds like you in a lot of ways. I hope she gets to see her sisters again when the weather is better.

We eat chili a lot which makes sense considering where we live. No one in my house will eat brown rice, not even the dogs. They looked so pitiful the last time I made it. When no one ate it, I mixed it with their food and promised them I would never try to make my family eat it again. I mean, if it's not good left overs for the dogs what use is is anyway? Too many big brown eyes looking up at me with such pitiful expressions and weakly wagging tails.

Have a great day everyone and good luck with your daily goals!

    Hello to all,

Wow snow everywhere! Good luck to all waiting for the storm to pass. Blizzard ended here late Sunday night but we then spent 2 days digging out. Today most out and about with normal winter driving conditions just a heck of a lot higher snow banks (from the digging out!). It is now very cold here but I am going to venture out later today.

Thanks to all for the good thoughts and the story sharing. I read with great interest and gain so much from all of you. I keep all in my thoughts through the day.

Sending out hopes for a healthy day,

    Good Morning Ladies,
At work for the next 13 hours so it is a good time to catch up with you before I start the data entry that I have gotten behind on.:grumble: I really need to just plug away on it as it comes in, I don't know why I procrastinate.:ohwell:
I had yesterday off and boy that was a challenge!! While I am running around it was no problem but the minute I sat down with my Dad at lunch and while I was playing cards with him BAM I was snacking:sad: I managed to stay under my calories but it was a stretch.
On a happy note... I dug out my favorite dress. It was one I mentioned a few months ago as being one of my goals. I wanted to wear it again. Guess what!!! IT FITS!!!! it is a large stretch velvet dress with a coat of the same material. It fits without showing any unsightly pulling or bulges. Now I just need some place to wear it to

Mac - Glad to hear your that you can carry on with your exercise, sorry that it will be painful

Renny - Welcome back fellow lurker. However you still need to log in foods. You don't want to be shocked when you are able to dig your bike out.

Joy - Where in So Cal are you? I lived there for about 8 years or so and my Mom still lives there. She is in Redondo Beach. Maybe I should visit her until our weather gets better.

Barb - Happy 95th to your Mom!!! :flowerforyou: She certainly has led an interesting life!!! In the past few years I have become closer to my Dad and I have found out many surprising and interesting things about my Dad, You are lucky to have the relationship that you have with her. How wonderful that she is still so active. My Dad had cancer last year but he is making a strong comeback and is doing his own finances again and driving short distances. However like your Mom he has given up grocery shopping. So that is one job that I do for him.

Doobiedoo - Sorry about losing your Dad.

Faye - I certainly understand how you feel about coloring your hair. Last year I decided to color my hair compleatly gray but when I told some friends about my plan they flipped!!!:noway: and talked me out of it. So..... I am letting Mother Nature take over and turn my hair naturly. My Brother thinks I should color my hair but has kept quiet after saying his piece. He does offer to "treat" me to a hair cut and color whenever we go to Laughlin together (about once or twice a year)

Well it started snowing here again. We are expecting another inch or so tonight and more tomorrow before the temp plunges into single digits :grumble: We are currently at the third snowest winter on record and we still have 3 months or more to go!!!! At least it's pretty to look at. Maybe I should learn to ski, ya know ... when life throws you lemons make lemonade.

Better run. To everyone I haven't mentioned, I am thinking of you and sending hugs and good vibes your way.

    Peggy

Hello lovely ladies! I hate to say it but I gained the pound that I lost  (which was one of the pounds I gained over the holiday season.......confusing.....I know)

I find it far more challenging to maintain my weight than to lose it.:ohwell: My lifestyle allows me to be a bit more inclusive with foods than before, so it’s easy to get sloppy. :embarassed:

I do track my food every day, try to exercise everyday and have at least 8 cups of water everyday.:flowerforyou: The tracking helps me to be very honest about why a pound comes back.:ohwell: I can actually go 200 calories over the targeted calories without gaining any weight. :noway: This, in itself, can make one a little lax about going over them. :embarassed:

So I am going to commit to staying within my total calories today. I:flowerforyou: will check back tomorrow to let you know how I did. This helps me to be accountable to someone other than myself.

We’re in this thing for life!!!! But just one day at a time.

Blessing to all! (And congratulations Robin!!!)

Yeah Robin!! Back to the salt mine for you after all this time. Now you have to hurry up and get over that bug you mentioned a few days ago.

Thanks to everyone for your birthday wishes for my mom. If I don't get off this website and get a move on, we will be eating frozen halibut for dinner--LOL

Just have to pass a joke along that someone posted on the Golden Sneakers Thread. Thanks to "dayh1ker":
I just got off the phone with a friend in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

She said that since early this morning the snow has accumulated to nearly waist deep and is still falling. The temperature is dropping below zero and the winds out of the north are increasing. Her husband has done nothing but look through the kitchen window.

She says that if it gets much worse, she may have to let him in.

My New Year Goals are easy. Finish what I started in December. In December I started at 151, finished at 146. So at 5 pounds a month - I should be at goal weight at the end of May. (Hopefully).

I've decided January is the month for Healthy Eating, Exercising and taking care of myself. It started good but then I had surgery on my mouth and can't eat for 2 weeks unless it is liquid or soft - that was the bad news - how to keep the momentum going. The good news is I got a lot of helpful advice on what I can do - so I'm going to try smoothies, pureed soup, greek yoghurt and anything else that someone out there recommends.

And at the end of January - I will be 5 lbs lighter and on my way!

For those that are interested I will be back at Boeing as an Engineering Tech Specialist which is a glorified title for an engineering gofer. Scanning and logging documents, creating and presenting PowerPoints, creating metrics and analyzing data. and trying to get information from engineers in a timely fashion (the real challenge) I did it for a year at Boeing as a contract hire before i was hired direct at Boeing in finance which is my specialty. I loved the tech work though so this will be fun. And most importantly it is a paycheck!!!!!!
