So I have a funeral for a relative of my boyfriend who I have never met to go to on Thursday. I haven't been to a funeral since my adolescence. What do I wear? I welcome any sugesstions...preferably in link or pic form... Keep in mind I am in Florida and it is HOT and HUMID.

I may be totally off base - but the dress in the picture would not be appropriate for the family member's funeral. If it's in the church, probably not.

Color is not such an issue anymore, but something more conservative might be better. Is there another family member you can ask? Someone that might have been to funerals before in your area?

A simple dress in a darker color is always appropriate. My current profile pic was actually taken following a memorial service for the father of a friend of ours. It wasn't a graveside service, but rather held in a chapel a few weeks after he was cremated. I wore a dark blue dress with a small floral print. I did wear a cardigan over the sweater in the chapel...as much for air conditioning as modesty.

Yeah that dress isn't appropiate.

Just wear something smart. Think about what you'd wear to a job interview for an office job and you'll probably do fine. If you would ear it to a party then it's probably not appropriate.

Funeral aside, chesty girls should NEVER wear ruffles at the bust like that. And if you want to show off your hourglass, those ruffles at the midsection would make a lady look pregnant. Flush that dress.

I agree with those who said more conservative. Show less skin on the top half. I typically wear a business suit to funerals, but I'm not much of a dress person.

I do think it's a little weird that you're going to a funeral for someone you've never met. I would feel like I'm intruding on a private family moment.

My Mother in law passed away earlier this year. The majority of adults were dressed in business casual to business attire. (they were a religious family in the south though.)

Honestly, the most important people there, are the people who were most affected by the passing, and they will care less about what you're wearing, and more about the fact that you cared enough about them to pay your respects.

Heck, if you have a nice pair of slacks (not jeans) and a decent shirt you might be able to make it without buying anything.

Take a pack of tissues. Funeral homes have them everywhere, but always good to be prepared.

Oh - if there will be a gravesite service, don't wear heels. Flats are your friend. Be polite, be quiet, and don't be on your phone until/unless you see the immediate family pull theirs out, it's rude. (but it does happen.)

It's on sale for $99. The polka dots are borderline but I think it will still fly for a solemn occasion. You can use it for other occasions after the funeral. It's classy and would be money well spent.

Legs above the knee, shoulders, chest, and sleeveless arms should not be on display at a funeral, even in Florida.

Hun, she's looking at dresses in Target clearance, I don't think a hundred dollar dress is gonna work for a funeral for someone she never knew.

Sleeveless is always appropriate in summer. Spaghetti straps are not Ok, but sleeveless absolutely is.

Agree with more conservative. If it is above the knee then it should be not too much above it. And no low neckline. You don't want to be a distraction.... and depending on the people, some folks will fixate on anything to distract from grief.

Thanks all. I have a better idea of what to wear. Now I can be sure I won't embarrass the family who is grieving for someone I've never met and be able to provide emotional support at the same time.
