Thank you for posting the Recipe.. I have cucks coming out my ears so always looking for a good recipe! Also have been known for putting zucchini in anyone's car who leaves the windows down or unlocked.. I did find I can take them to the local food pantry and St Vinneys.

Hi ladies, I see we are on page two already this month, so I am putting in my two bits worth while I can. When it gets to page twenty, I lose the conversation until the following month! So here goes: In July, after 4 weeks of recovered health, I once again had emergency surgery. It was less invasive this time and I am recovering faster, although still with complications. I am told that I must lose 100 lbs before this can be fixed and to expect it to recur! I am on a strict meal replacement diet and have lost 24 lbs so far but have hit a plateau this week. I am hoping it is just my body telling me that I am sufficiently healed to take on more exercise I haven't caught up on all the comments yet, but I see you are still entertaining us with your stories and jokes, Barb! And I greatly appreciate your constant encouragement Issyfit and Dot, as I struggle through this trying time! Kudos to you both! And now, ( have a lot of reading to catch up on! Keep safe everyone until the nest time!

Sylvia – you can sing to me and I will not put my hands over my ears!!!! Heck Levi and I might dance!!! Love the jokes

MNMargaret - I cheer for you supporting your son, of course some limits are appropriate, but I don’t have a supportive family so when I hear of folks taking in their children or grand children I cheer!

    Patty – a massage ---heaven!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi ladies!

Today marks one year since I joined MFP. My first four months were stellar, the next four were good ... but the last four have been very frustrating. Looking back at my diary and exercise log ... I can see what the problem is. I've become lax with the logging and not very consistent with the exercise.

Since I want to continue to lose weight and become more fit, I need to go back to what was working. Weighing and logging everything ... regular cardio and weight training. Pretty simple when applied!

I did not meet my July goals ... but they're good for August!
    Weigh and log my food.
Gym at least 2x a week
Increase water to 8 glasses per day.

Heather ... I found your DH's novels on kindle ... just finished reading volume 1 and have volume 2. I love to read and haven't had much time lately ... spent way too much time with DH's book yesterday ... but couldn't help myself! Enjoying the trilogy very much!
Also found Nigella's recipe for Jumbo Chili Sauce... have added it to my must try list of recipes! Thanks!

{{{{Rita}}}} ... what an awful thing for a mom to "witness" through a phone ... so sad ... prayers sent your way.

Kim ... loved the TV clip! You sounded wonderful and very much what I thought you would sound like.

Jane ... your luck surely must change soon with the house hunting!!

AnneCarol ... 24 pounds is amazing ... of course you're at a plateau! Your body is throwing fits! Hang in there!

Sylvia- thanks for the jokes. I especially liked the "one for the money" one

Meg - happy birthday to your hubby. I also make zucchini chocolate bread (only I don't tell Vince that there's zucchini in it), I have some pineapple zucchini muffins in the freeer right now. I never heard of zucchini brownies. I bet if I put the zucchini in it, and just pureed it fine enough, Vince would never know the difference! What's the recipe? What a great tribute your daughter gave you!

Jessica called and asked if I wanted to go to the movies with her and Kris tonight. Sad as it is, my first thought was "I don't have many calories left for today". Well, really, it is nice of her to ask me, but in a way I'd feel like I was intruding on them. But it's so sad that my first thought was "I don't have enough calories".

    Beth - happy anniversary

  • Hi,I am looking for other ladies my age to exchange experiences. I am 69.
I never had a huge weight problem in my life. When I was younger and I put on a few pounds too many all I had to do was diet a few days and I was okay again. I was never overweight.
Not so since I went through menopause. I am 5'4 and at one time I was over 150 pounds and from then on I was constantly yoyoing. I went down to 110 and up again in the 140s, down to 120 up again 20 pounds and so on and so on.
I am very active and since I am retired I took up road biking. So every day weather permitting I am out there cycling for hours. I also garden, swim, do Yoga and like to hike.
But I have not figured out a diet which works for me at my age. I seem to need very few calories to survive. But of course 1000 calories a day is not very satisfying and easily surpassed. I am not a big meat eater and I thought that by eating mostly fruits, nuts, eggs and yogurt I would be fine. but I put on weight with that. I already figured out that I have an addiction to bread and cakes and try to stay away from it, which is very difficult for me because I really enjoy good bread and home made cakes.
I went on Atkins a few times which initially works but after a few days I am so tired of meat and fat that I rather do not eat at all, which leaves me too sluggish to move.
That whole postmenopausal thing is not working for me. I finally found some supplement "Remifemin" which seems to help with the hot flashes, but I still suffer from insomnia and mood swings.
The constant yoyoing has left my skin saggy and so when my weight is down I get so depressed about the saggy skin that I eat again to fill out. But my general well being and energy level is best when I am around 115 pounds. So anybody out there who has found the stone of wisdom? I do not want to exclude the rest of the population , but it is really a problem of women of a certain age.......

Happy August lovely ladies. I've been a tad too busy to keep up with the forum, but this weekend will have some more time.

I had no specific July goals, so none was reached. I have been maintaining at a 40 lb loss for months however. Since I've had the flu and this lingering stupid cough as well as helping DD with the babies, I have not really had time to think about diet and exercise. Just happy to maintain for now. Last 10 lbs will need to be a new project for the fall.

I am going to watch Kim once I am able to get the link copied, which is a little tricky when on a tablet.

Have a great evening and ttyl.

PS: Kim - I watched the tv clip. I loved it! The joy radiates from your face. Thanks for sharing.

    Good morning everyone!

Posting (and logging) irregularly because of vacation, but skimmed all the post. Glad to read so many upbeat messages. Thinking of you, Rita, and hoping you get the right help for yourself. :flowerforyou:

    Random remarks:
Meg: has the vet said why your dog is licking the paw? I mean, is there some kind of irritation that needs treatment or is it a habit? If it's a habit you could try socks held in place with that self-sticking vet tape.

Dogs eating poop, two remarks: try to prevent them from eating horse manure; horses are dewormed every now and again (or should be) and there can be traces of the stuff in the manure. Also, definitely prevent them from eating human poop. Sounds gross, but I know of several dogs who became severely ill after eating human poop that had drugs in it.

Have not been eating according to the plan, but trying to stay more or less at maintenance. Did get my normal workout in yesterday at a gym we were taken to as guests. Tonight we went to a symphony orchestra concert. Tomorrow we will be doing laundry at my Mom's.

    Wishing everyone a good day!

Good evening ladies. Some more new people again!!! Yeah!!!!

Jane, is getting an appointment with the landlord something like 'getting to second base'???  Good luck, sure hope you can get it. Kim, loved the interview. I think you may be the only person hear that we have actually heard a voice.Except of course the group of ladies that got together.

I never knew my description of my husbands channel surfing and commenting about elephant poop was going to stimulate such a discussion on poop.

Charlie got his partial plate yesterday and doesn't like it at all. He doesn't like the feeling of the artificial stuff on the roof of his mouth. Plus he only has upper teeth on the right. He just keeps on having them pulled if they need work. So the whole left upper is now a partial plate and he doesn't feel like he can feel what he is chewing. He wants to use them only when he is eating and no other time. I am trying to convince him to give it time. He has a couple of songs he does with his karaoke that there are several bars of music that he whistles. The partial has affected that and everyone has always complimented him on his whistling. He does have a follow up appointment in 2 weeks to see if there any adjustments too be made. He just says it was a $2000 mistake.

got my compression socks today. Was pleasantly surprised to see the amount of colors to choose from. Walgreens on line has dozens of colors and designs but I would have to pay shipping. So in store had some regular flesh tone. they had some patterned that looked like nice trouser socks but they were off white and cream colors. I didn't know that they had mild, medium and heavy compression. Walgreens in store only carried mild and that's where the doctor said to go so I got the mild. So I will have to see how they do on Sunday. Right now I just plan to ear them on Sundays. I did have a really short episode today when I was fixing my lunch that I felt a little dizzy but it was nothing like the other episodes. It wouldn't have done me any good to take my B/P because by the time I went into the living room where I have my cuff, sat down and taken it the reading would have been back up to normal. I did push the 'event' button on my monitor though

Hello again lovely ladies. I've had some up & down times of late. We spent some wonderful time in Derbyshire - a beautiful area of England - lots of history. We had no internet access & had a lovely time with friends eating & walking.

I was getting back into the swing of things again when my husband had a heart attack on Monday. The ambulance crew were here in minutes & we had a blue light journey to a specialist cardiac unit 50 miles away. The hospital team were at the door as the ambulance pulled up & within 20 minutes my husband had 2 stents fitted & was sat up talking. He was well enough to eat a small lunch 3 hours later. He is home now with a long slow recovery ahead of him. He knew he needed to loose weight but shocked at how much the hospital told him he needed to loose - 42lbs. Our downfall is portion sizes so we are both now working harder of a healthy lifestyle.

Hugs & good wishes to you all. I need to go read now to catch up.

    morning ladies~
well so much for sleeping in,I was up at 4 am, DH is still trying to sleep, I read somewhere that you should have 4 full glasses of water as soon as you wake up,it will keep your organs well, and is especially good at keeping heart attacks at bay.. well I cant do that, but I usually do a 12 ounce glass right away 16 oz of warm lemon water, and then 16 ounces of tea, and then 24 oz of water at the gym, before I eat anything ,so I guess that is good
going to visit my aunt who had the surgery today, and also go see my DFIL, go to Sams and get some fruit and veggies and 1/2 and 1/2 and then go out to dinner, I have decided to have the strawberry, blueberry chicken salad at 99 restaurants, w/o dressing or the glazed pecans, will bring some natural slivered almonds with me and put those on.

 Alison, does it work to drink so much at one time? Someone posted on MFP to stretch it out thru the day,but I can't drink
anything later in the day,or will be up many times in the night.Maybe it's whatever works, being we are all different.

The longer I try to stay within my calories, the more I am refining what I eat/drink.One thing that helps ,is not craving the foods
    allowed.Have recently noticed not craving the "good"stuff either.Only took 1 & 1/2yrs :grumble: :grumble: A learning process
that never ends,at least for me.Journaling has helped the most & will need to keep on &on&on :ohwell: :ohwell:

How do you all get your protein without eating lots of meat? Eggs are fine, but not every meal.

 Welcome Gerri & Hope all good things for you & your DH.Heart problems bring a lot of learning. My DH has a fast heartbeat that nothing worked to slow it down. The meds have caused his appetite & energy levels to drop way down.
Trying to lower my appetite while trying to raise his ......not easy. Excuse my whine.I'm thankful to have him....we'll figure it out.

Had to tell friend,no more veggies from their garden! :noway: Have cukes in vinegar solution in fridge & a sack of tomatoes, green peppers, onions plus 3 squash on the counter. Whew!

Breakfast time.Watermelon is always yummy. Have a nice day.....
  • I am trying to reply to Gen's post, but I am doing something wrong.
I am so sorry to hear what happened to your husband. We all have to be aware that we settle for too high weights at an advanced age. Over the years the weight creeps up and we think it is normal.
Only after I checked different sources I realized that I was twenty or thirty pounds away from my ideal weight. Portion control is my big thing too. I had to give up bread, cakes and other baked goods because I could not stop eating them. If I have it in the house I eat it. But even with fruits I have problems. After tracking with the tools here, I realized that the fruits I was eating per day were adding up very quickly and that is why I had problems losing weight. I wish I would have a personal cook who serves me the right portion for every meal because when I cook myself I tend to snack a little bit here and there. I do not trust the big companies who prepare the frozen meals. Everything processed is in danger of having unhealthy additives which make you addicted, so that is no option for me either..

Just a few weeks ago I bought a rice cooker. Now I am trying to make my meals with it. First I cook some brown rice and after ten minutes I add chicken and vegetables in the steamer dish and cook another ten or fifteen minutes. I like it because it is easy to do , does not require any fat and I can cook as small a portion as I want. I hope it will work out.

Good morning! Going swimming (laps) this morning, then picking up son and kids to go to farmers market. Then gotta go help take down our group pottery show in Columbus, then go to the lake to relax. Just kidding. Can't relax. Gotta clean the cabin really well, as we are having a birthday bbq the next weekend to celebrate three August birthdays. We keep it pretty neat out there, but there are things to do.

Yesterday I bought a bicycle for myself at a yard sale for $15! It's not fancy, but it's in really good shape and just the right size for me. 24inch. I had a 26 inch a long time ago and it felt too big. So, we pumped up the tires last night and greased a few places and I took it for a spin. LOVED IT! I still need to get a helmet. Don't want to set a bad example for the kids. Then I have to find a place to ride it. I'm not confident enough to ride it in the street, except in our tiny neighborhood.

    Welcome to the new ladies!

Geri, sorry to hear about hubby's heart trouble. I had a three heart Cath's and a very long stent last year, but did not actually have a heart attack first. Just angina. That must have been really scary for you! I'm glad he's feeling better.

Time to go! Talk to you later!

Oh gosh a new month, new goals, etc.

Another crazy week. Headed out for some errands and my 15 mile bike ride (before the rains I hope).

Not sure I set goals for July, other than to follow my Biggest Loser eating plan, which I have. I do need to get work on my exercise, as in getting more regular again.

Will be back later to read some more.

    Have a great day!

I agree with not drinking too much water at once. One glass of water 8 ounce is enough when you wake up. I do agree with the practice because it gets your body primed for the day. Just not so much. My niece when she was in her twenties ran into problems when she drank too much water at once. It disrupted her electrolytes. She did have to go to the hospital. If you have an underlying heart condition this could be dangerous for you.

For me the key to my weight loss and maintenance is moderation in all things. To keep things from getting boring I change the variety of the the things I eat and do. I looked back on my weight pattern for the year and there was a ten pound range. six pounds above my goal weight and four pounds below. For the last three month I have been within two pounds of my goal. When I got six pounds over I went back to logging food and exercise again.

Today I will work on drinking water in moderate amounts until I reach my eight glasses. :drinker:

  • Hi, I need some support I have lost around 3 stones but after a recent holiday just cannot seem to get it moving again, portion sizes creeping up and adding extras to meals not helping really want to find the strength to keep going. I have replacement heart valves so exercise is difficult any ideas about how to get going again would help I need to lose another 28lb

    Good morning ladies,

Today will be strength training for upper body plus treadmill.

Sylvia, great job swimming and adding the bicycle to you routine!

Geri, I'm so sorry about your husband. Best wishes for his recovery..

Margaret, I agree that moderation is key to losing and maintaining. When I relax with portion control my weight starts going up. When I see a 2-3 pound gain I get back to watching portions.

Annie, in addition to portion control, regular strength training sessions have been key for my loss. My Hubby has tried to tell me for years that I need muscle to burn calories. I have lifted on and off over the years, but finally have been consistent about it for the last 2 years.

    Welcome everyone new!

Best wishes to all I missed. Time to treadmill!

    Have a great Saturday everyone!

Michele: I agree that maintaining weight is a more difficult challenge than losing in many ways. It is really hard to maintain the discipline when the scale doesn’t reward you with losses. It is also all too easy to slide back into careless calorie consumption and fall back into old habits that caused weight gain in the first place. As to singing, I need to sing when entirely alone. That way I’m not hurting anyone’s ears.

    Sylvia: Your jokes are prizes.

Heather: Have fun with your DGKs.:flowerforyou:

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” Thomas A. Edison

    August Goals:
    1. Log every bite and swallow.
    2. Cardio exercise at least 3 days a week.
    3. Have fun every day.
    4. Drink at least three glasses of water daily, preferably more!
