i run in both Ghost's and ON clouds. I'd never heard of ON and was skeptical, but they are wonderful. if you are fitted and they match your needs, i highly recommend them!

Go to Running Room and see what they recommend after they've had a look at your gait

My current shoes are New Balance 940 (which were about $130), and I have a new pair on the way of Asics Gel Kayano 20 (which are normally $160 but I got them on deal). I need stability shoes for my gait and stability costs more than neutral so I pay it.

Asics Gel Noosa are the best! I have tried many shoes from Nike Free and Air Max to Reebox and the Asics are the best choice. My feet are cushioned, less injury and the cost is around $120.00 but you can find the older models on Amazon.

Asics Gel Kayano (about $150). It's like running on a cloud... LOL

+1 for Kayano. I've owned 4 or 5 pair over the years. I'm a very big fan.

I normally don't pay much more than ~$100 bucks for a pair of Kayanos. If you shop around (general googling, eBay, ect), you can often track down a pair of older generation (but new in box) Kayanos for significantly less than you'd pay at D1ck's and the like. They're still a great shoe even if you're looking at Kayano 18s, 19s, or whatever generation.

edit: because properly spelled "dix" (sporting goods) is apparently a censored word.

Saucony kinvaras off amazon after new model out: 55$

Altras off left lane sports: 50$

    Inov-8 Left lane sports 60$

All of these are typically 100$+ in store.

I purchase my watches, bottles, socks etc from local running stores but, now that I know what I like, I buy my shoes online for price.

Never heard of left lane sports. Thanks for the tip. My wife does whatever the opposite of thanking you is.

Which Altras do you use and would you say they are a similar style to the Kinvaras? Just switched to Kinvaras and loving them. Been curious about altras but the couple of times I went to a LRS they didn't have any in my size (which is 11 - nothing special).

My current arsenal... these are all "barefoot" zero drop shoes, except for the Montrails, which are 4mm drop and have some cushioning for longer runs. They all run $100-110... but I can sometimes find them cheaper. Since most shoe stores don't carry these, I order everything online.

    For the road:
    New Balance Hi Rez
    New Balance MR00
    New Balance MR00v2
    Merrell Road Glove
    Merrel Road Glove 2
    Inov8 Bare-X 150
    Altra Sampson

    For the trail:
    Merrell Trail Glove
    New Balance MT00
    Montrail Fluid-Flex

(I also keep a mileage log on all my shoes...and for me, the more miles they have, the more I like them because they they just keep getting flatter and more "barefoot". I have over 800 miles on my MR00s.)

Asics Gel-Kayano 20's so far. Low arches. - $120ish on sale. Seems to be the average for all of my shoes.

Keep a log of your shoes for reference and future purchases.

    GT2000-2________12______foot pain, poor materials

Right on point! DO NOT buy the Asics GT2000 2 L-S! I have had months of ongoing bottom foot and achilles pain, burning of my bottom feet and now my skin is peeling off between where my toe and ball of foot meet. I do HIIT 5-days a week and can barely walk after class. The burning is continuous now and never stops. I just sent a complaint with a request for a recall to Asics regarding this poorly constructed shoe. Apparently I just researched and found out this is new material, and I am not the only one. There are others complaining about this on their website as well. Who new? I'm not happy with Asics right now. Need to find a new pair of kicks, and fast. And expensive to boot! $130.00 worth of foot pain. Boo! :(

For my first year of running (almost all treadmill) I ran in a pair of the cheapest shoes I could get from Decathlon and I never suffered with shin splints or any other problems.

Earlier in the year I decided that I'd proved to myself that I was "into" this running thing and I went to Sports Direct (mainstream sports store) and asked for advice. Big mistake. They don't do gait analysis on a treadmill and basically try to convince you to buy their own brand Karrimor shoes.

I spent £60 on some for my low arch, and they gave me blisters on the inside of my foot after a mile. And then I found out they don't offer refunds (the shoes weren't marked).

I got some New Balance for about £40 and really liked them, then a few months later got some Asics Kayano 20 because they were on sale for £98. I alternate between the two now, but the New Balance start to hurt my arches a little bit after about 5 miles.

Though as a warning, don't always settle for the first "professional" opinion you get. My first gait analysis was at a specialist running store and they recommended the Nimbus / Cumulus. I went to the actual Asics store and they said they would never put me in a neutral shoe.

Running in traditional running shoes will eventually injure you to the point where you can no longer run....

I'm another for ASICS Gel-Kayano (19 or 20). I pronate from the ankles (I have arches, but weak ankles make my feet roll inward, and they hold my ankles and feet just right for running. And the PADDING, lemme tell ya...

I tried to switch when I couldn't find my size (Big Foot 10 here), and I was miserable with all the others I tried on. When I finally found them again, I bought two pairs. I am SOLD.

I over pronate and have very wide and flat feet. My Mizuno Wave Paradox were $230, but I'm in Australia and everything cost more here :ohwell:

I also pronate, so last year when I was still living in Toronto took myself off to the running room and got fitted with Mizuno wave inspire 9. After wearing Nikes for nearly forever, I will never be going back. Awsome shoes to run in. +/-CA$170 range tax included.

I appreciate all the input. When it comes to cost, price is basically no object for me. I am willing to pay top dollar for three things: Tools for work, good food, and workout gear. I've run on a treadmill in a gym before just so I could watch myself run in a mirror, and I notice if I'm not paying attention, my ankles wobble when I run. Partially fixed this by simply making sure my shoes were tighter, but definitely having someone watch me run and determining my shoe needs is a great idea. I will make time for that at some point.

Don't think it's something your can really do yourself watching in a mirror, the shop I use actually video your ankles/calves from behind and then slow it down frame by frame so they can see where and how the foot is planted; any bulge/bend in the achilles etc, you're not going to be able to do that yourself from side on in a mirror on a treadmill.
Once you've had your gait analysed once you can then replace them with cheaper online deals for the same make/model.

I wear Brooks Vapor for road running and saloman unltra 2 for the trails.
