I for many years was guilty of saying "nip it in the butt". My best friend finally told me I was saying it wrong a few years ago.

My son, if someone coughs always asks, "do you need the heineken maneuver".

So I was reading this book and they used the saying (well close anyway) "No Holes Barred", and I am thinking isn't it "No holds barred"? Thought maybe I was wrong for a minute there. What sayings have you or someone else gotten wrong?

Sounds like you are letting them in all of the holes.

I'm thinking of having the saying changed;)
  • "For all intensive purposes."

I get annoyed when someone writes, "your wrong." I also get annoyed when someone says "good" and they mean "well."

    "How are you today?"
    "I'm doing good!"
    **I'm screaming inside.**

The first two. Not so much that last one. I just imagine that they are letting me know that they are putting positive vibes into the universe, random acts of kindness...that they are, in fact, doing good.

I also giggle whenever someone says something like "I'm going to do alot". So dirty and wrong. http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/04/alot-is-better-than-you-at-everything.html

Even if they are doing good and tell me about it, that doesn't answer my question.

What bugs me is when people correct me if I say/write something along the lines of, "Do you want to go to the store with me and Sarah?" And the person says "It's Sarah and I." Because, in that case, it would be "me and Sarah." If I said "Me and Sarah are going to the store, do you want to go?" then yes, it should be "Sarah and I."
  • Irregardless

Unfortunately Merriam-Webster considers this abomination a real word. *cringe*

Maybe they really are telling you that they are doing good works...and maybe that is their polite way to avoid answering the other question. It is kind of a personal question...unless you're just looking for the generic "I'm fine" answer, in which case, you don't *really* care how they are doing...which is sort of insensitive. You're cold.

    Irregardless

Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that “there is no such word.” There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.

It's been used for a long, long time.

My kids thought the Canadian anthem said, "We stand on God for thee" instead of "We stand on guard for thee".

That one is my favorite

That is exactly what I was going to say! Do they even think about what they are saying?

To be honest, I don't care how they are doing. It is just a greeting. I don't believe that most people who ask that question actually care about the truthful answer.

If they are truly doing good, I want to hear about it. In that case, though, I would want to know specifics. They could say, "I've been rescuing kittens in my spare time." I would love to hear about that!

As a child, I thought people were saying, "Do you, Jim, take Jane to be your waffley wedded wife?"

My parents never provided me with a good enough explanation for why breakfast food was a part of the wedding ceremony.

As I got older, I realized it couldn't be wafflely, so I thought and thought until I figured out that they were saying "Awfully."

Did you ask her to spell it? She might have been trying to say doggy dogg world. Totally acceptable.
