Anyone ever experience sleep paralysis?
when I was a child I had "nightmares" in which I saw nothing and heard nothing but was aware or suspicious of an intruder trying to get into my room to hurt me, terrified that I could neither move nor scream. I now think that was just being awake with sleep paralysis.0 -
OK, Brett, do this one now! That's some freaky shniz, Ginger.
I don't think I should continue trying to debunk things, people don't enjoy it. Usually because the truth is something like, "You didn't hear/see what you thought you did/You're remembering wrong/You're lying."
Case in point you said you don't have mice/rats. There aren't many homes where it's an impossibility that mice or rats can get in. To rule that out as a possibility but to believe that the dead have risen, are invisible to the human eye, and spend their time knocking over lunchboxes until someone asks them not to...
Sorry, I gotta go with mice over that explanation.
I was honestly curious about how you would explain it. Although, that would have to be a really strong mouse, and I can promise you I don't have rats. It was two lunch boxes and two mini igloo coolers sitting on top of a flat top Coleman, backed up to a wall and the end of a counter, so blocked in on two sides. All 4 were knocked onto the floor. I would prefer it to be the earth moving. :flowerforyou:
Oh I very much enjoy debunking and finding out natural causes for supposed paranormal phenomena. But over the internet it's just too hard. Not being able to see the area and just going off your memory...that's what makes it so hard.
And I really don't mean to offend anyone with my non-belief. I just...well...I don't believe in ghosts. And I know there are a ton of people out there who scam and lie for various reasons.
I'm not offended. Next time you're in the area, you can come to my house. I'm always really bummed out when I find out someone's a fake. I really hope the Long Island Medium isn't a fake.0 -
As for their being "proof of ghosts" of course there isn't. We can't "prove" without a doubt any deity exists, either, despite having Holy texts and documents, and millions of believers and/or followers of various faiths/religions throughout the world.
Ghosts/spirits fall into the realm of the paranormal, and obviously, are unexplained. It's something, you either believe, or you don't.... and for those who don't, no amount of proof will prove otherwise to them.
Re God: Well yes, exactly.
Re Proof, well no. People who don't believe in ghosts base their opinion on evidence so give me some scientific evidence and I will change my mind.0 -

you could make any claim on the basis that there is no evidence to the contrary.
eta nvm now i see you were saying give evidence that ghosts are real0 -
I've got one for Brett to solve with his Mystery Machine and talking Great Dane.
I grew up in area that was part of Sherman's march during the Civil War. At night, you could see flashes of light that came from a source that seemed to hover off the ground. Many, many people have seen it on many, many occassions. What clever logic do you think explains that?
Genuinely curious...

Check the cellar tonight... (Relax. There's no such thing as haunted houses.)0 -
I also don't believe in ghosts. There are just too many other explanations. I do enjoy a good scare though. Ghost stories or creepy movies. I think that, by nature, people like the rush that something scary gives them. The mind latches onto ghosts because, typically, we don't stop to think rationally. I work in a cemetery and seem to be the only person here who has never seen/heard a ghost. I've lived in old houses, and even rented a room in an old mortuary when I was in college. I have even had people tell me it's simply because I'm just not open to them.
OP- as for the noise you and your dog heard, it really could have been as simple as wind through the broken window. When you went upstairs, maybe it stopped because at that time you were now out of ear shot. By the time you came back downstairs, the wind was no longer blowing. Sound travels in funny ways. Last night I could hear my son coughing in his room. It also sounded as though someone was having a conversation outside of my bedroom window. I got up to look out my window but saw nothing. Then I realized that not only was my son coughing, which could be heard clear as day, but he was also quietly sobbing and talking to himself. The sound of that carried into my room differently than the loud sound of his cough, making it sound as though a conversation was taking place off in the distance.
You have nothing to be afraid of! Go do your work outs, and I am sure that after some time you will figure out a logical explanation of what the noise is.0 -

Give me some scientific evidence neither exist. You can't. Obviously, those of us who believe in God go upon faith alone, and those of us who believe in the paranormal have varying degrees, but many *like myself* are trying to use science to prove such. Just because it hasn't been done yet, doesn't mean it won't be. Scientific discoveries are made every day, we have to keep an open mind.0 -

No I cant give you direct evidence something does not exist, ie to prove a negative. I cannot prove a whole host of negatives except to say there is no evidence to support the proposition. There is no evidence to support ghosts and as such I don't believe in ghosts. But if you find some give me a call and I'll tell everyone in the uk!
We certainly do have to keep an open mind. But an open mind does not mean that we should believe things that do not have any supporting evidence. An open mind would be to accept the evidence, however much we would prefer the contrary to be true.
Good luck ghost hunting.:happy:0 -
I went through about two weeks of this a few months ago, I was working way too many hours and not sleeping enough, constantly was hearing whispering and faint talking around me at all hours of the day and night. Especially night. I lived (and still live) in my own home, alone, no shared walls and no neighbors close enough to hear. I would check the house, the yard, and recheck again and again. I'd get so scared some nights. I'm pretty positive it was auditory hallucinations from being overrtired/overworked/overstressed.0

Read up on the scientific method some time. You're doing it wrong.0 -
I can't prove that pegacorns don't exist... ergo they must exist
I can't prove that trees aren't malicious wizards trying to pollute our precious bodily ions, ergo they must die.0 -

I know I said I wouldn't, but a thought occurred to me so...
Could be a magnetic effect. *pause for mocking and eye rolling* Sounds like a cop out, doesn't it? Saying that the Earth's magnetism can somehow cause floating lights in the sky?
Aurora borealis. Caused by solar winds and the Earth's natural magnetism. A completely natural and explainable occurence.
For how many generations do you think our ancestors attributed this to spirits or the gods? What else could explain it, right?
Yes, science discovers new things all the time. But what they typically find out is that there are interesting yet rather mundane explanations for things we don't yet understand. Not once has any discovery even hinted at the existence of the supernatural. Always just regular, run of the mill, natural occurences. Displays of lights, strange noises, things floating in the sky... yes they are strange. And fascinating, especially the ones that haven't been fully explained yet.
But every time, every single explanation, is a natural one. Not ghosts. Not ghosts one time, ever.
So tell us how you feel about aliens?0 -

Evil Dead or Evil Dead 2?
I can't remember which.
I am loving all of the horror movie gifs!!! :drinker:0 -
Well, as long as the ghost doesn't eat the food I have set aside for my calories for the day, then he or she can stay. Touch my food and it is banished to the other worlds. Be more afraid of the living, then the dead.0

I have a few of mine own experiences and I absolutely believe in ghosts.
I won't go into details (would take too much time) but 4 of the ghosts were nice and I felt relaxed with them. 2 of them absolutely were not nice and I found a couple of stern "get the F*** out" worked (unfortunately one of these didn't make itself known to me until it had scared the life out of a friend of mine by shoving her round the bed she was in).0 -

Check out the Marfa lights. After 120 years, still scientifically unexplainable.0 -

Ok so its 5:30AM I'm up first and my husband and daughter are still snoozing. I fumble around in the dark for my workout gear and head down stairs to the first floor. My dog follows. I'm sitting on the couch sipping water trying to wake up and the house is dead silent. Its pitch black outside..Then I hear it....it sounded like my daughter yawning....at first, then it kept up. Sounded like breathing, and close. I stood up and looked up the stairs, thinking maybe my husband is trying to scare me. I stand there and wait, I hear it again. At this point i'm getting pretty freaked out. My dog is too. She's looking up the stairs and then starts barking. I decide to check it out. I head up and flip the light on and stand there and nothing. I head into my daughters room (at this point I'd known it wasn't her) and she's sound asleep. Head to the bedroom and hubby is sleeping. So I'm like WTF!?
I've wasted like 15 min of precious workout time at this point walking/standing around my house like a nutcase but I know what I heard, and the dog heard it too. There has to be some reasonable explanation but I haven't figured it out.
I'm a little freaked out guys. I hope I have the nerve to get up for the AM workout again tomorrow :-/
Might be due to something called infrasound - low frequency sounds that can sometimes produce odd sensations and feelings.

Interesting article, thanks for sharing. It was unusually windy that day and yea my anxiety spiked through the roof!0 -
The only "ghosts" that might scare me are the living breathing two legged sort that invade ones house at midnight, hence me on a fitness course. As to aliens do you mean the sort that creep illegally over our respective countries borders, or do you mean the ones hovering in saucers?0

When you say anxiety are you prone to having bouts of anxiety generally or are you going through a stressful period in your life recently?
Your ghost experience may simply be your anxiety manifesting itself in your pre waking state.0
