Don't be fooled by Mcdonalds Oatmeal

IMO the best "fast food" oatmeal out there is at Jamba Juice. They use steel cut oats and slice real bananas on top. I always ask to sub the brown sugar for a little splenda. Excellent if you just don't have time in the morning.
I bought my own so I can do that at home now, because you're right - they are so good. I'm doing the SB diet though, so until next week - no fruit. LOL Then I'll add some berries I think.0 -
BLAH! McDonald's Red and Yellow = YEILD, STOP!
Too funny!0 -
Man, oh man, now I am worried!! I LOVE their fruit and yogurt parfaits. I wonder how much sugar might be in one of those?0

I have the McDonalds calorie facts right here (yes I'm a nerd) lol I actually have a "diet" notebook. (shh.. I'm an organizer!)
Anyway, here's the break down
Fruit and Yogurt Parfait w/out granola - 130 calories - 2g of Total Fat - 1g Sat Fat - 0g Trans Fat - 5mg cholesterol - 55mg sodium - 25g carbs - 0g fiber - 19g sugar - 4g protein
Fruit and Yogurt Parfait w/granola - 160 calories - 2g of Total Fat - 1g Sat Fat - 0g Trans Fat - 5mg cholesterol - 85mg sodium - 31g carbs - 0g fiber - 21g sugar - 4g protein
Definitely NOT the worst thing on their menu by a long shot. Their coffee's are the worst! Not a single one has less than 39 grams of sugar with most of them between 45-55.
And don't even get me started on the food LOL0 -

21 grams of sugar in the fruit and yogurt parfait.0 -

McDonald's is so gross.0

I agree...for a fast food place...That's pretty good. Check out

And see for yourself. Don't just take what everyone tells you to believe.
I agree; no, it's not perfect, but if you're on the road or in a hurry, it's a lesser of evils.0 -
CAN YOU BELIEVE that MCDONALDS IS #8 on the list of "MOST HEALTHIEST FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS IN AMERICA"???0

WOW!! Thank you so much for checking that.0 -

I agree! It is good w/o the Maple syrup. Ours here doesnt have brown sugar in it but maple syrup. The fruit is fresh and the cranberries are dried. I liked it! I just added a little splenda and a small drop of thinly sliced almonds and had a decent breakfast the other day.0

Go home and make the same thing from fresh ingredients and you'll probably see half the sugar, half the sodium and half the fat of what you would get at McDonald's.
And for the record, I absolutely LOVE McDonald's but I am not delusional enough to think that if I cave and get myself an oatmeal, salad or parfait from McDonald's that I am eating healthy. LOL
Have you actually *read* the posts in this thread before posting yourself? (That's the least thing to do if you're a polite contributor, and I'm a little fed up with the rudeness of people who don't.) I posted nutritional comparisons between my homemade oatmeal, McDonald's, and two more commercially available variations. McD is lowest in fat, lower in sodium than mine, and the difference in sugars can be entirely attributed to its containing dried fruit (which mine doesn't).
I am actually thinking that the existence of McDonald's and all the other low-quality, low-price fast-food chains is a major scourge on nutrition for the masses and haven't eaten there in years (and then I had 1 small portion of fries). But making unsubstantiated claims isn't going to help.
Now I *am* thinking that "go home and make your own" is excellent advice, if only it is a much better attitude to controlling what we eat and having a better relationship to our food, but that's an entirely different issue.0 -
I thought it was a better alternative than a burger-0
-
Glad you posted this. When my family had to eat out due to time issues, I requested the McDonalds Fruit Oatmeal. It was the best alternative to a situation that could have gotten extremely fattening!0

IT'S NOT THAT BAD!! Read the actual source from McDonalds...and for fast food...not that bad.
It's only 18 g without the brown sugar added. 0 Trans fat for both, 5 grams of fiber, and 290 calories with brown sugar, and 260 without.
Sodium, 160 with brown sugar, and 115 without.

Always better to make your own at home...but if your in a hurry or bind, this isn't that bad.
It's always good to get the info directly from the source.
ONLY 18g of sugar??!! Normal sugar levels in the blood amounts to a teaspoon - about 4g. And you have to count the total carbs minus the fiber. The non-fiber carbs is actually what will become sugar in the body. So there's a lot more than 18g or 31g of sugar in that oatmeal.
Anything more than about 4-5g of sugar in the blood is toxic and your body will have to pump out a lot of insulin to take care of that and when insulin is up your body isn't burning fat, it's burning sugar. I thought the purpose was to get rid of fat, not sugar. How can the body get rid of fat when it spends it's day getting rid of sugar?0 -
Come on, is this a surprise? It says MAPLE and BROWN SUGAR right there in the name of the food.0

Oh wow I want some oatmeal now *takes another bite of my Big Mac and large fries*0
-
wow not sure what to think about this. I thought it was a good choice when out and about once in a blue moon to eat.. better then getting a egg mc muffin? It may not be the best choice in fast food but there has to be some "better" choices..... if you had to eat there... I liked the oatmeal only with the fruit, no brown sugar packet sprinkled on it for me! I thought mc'd's finally made a good decision here coming out with this item???0
-
Pretty much everything at McDonalds is unhealthy
Yep! The only thing I get there is apple slices minus the caramel sauce!0 -

Fast food places like to make the public think they are adding healthy alternatives to their menus. This is usually false. A Big Mac has fewer calories than their salad! :O I am only using McDonald's as an example by the way, but they all pretty much do this. I mean, even the apple slices I mentioned in the previous thread are usually eaten by folks WITH the sauce, making them a high-calorie snack. The only restaurant I can think of that even seems remotely healthy is Subway (and other sub shops, perhaps).....but then, I guess it depends on how you get the sub made. MINE is healthy, but one could easily make a sub there with 1000-2000 calories I'm sure. People need to be really careful that just because something sounds healthy, doesn't make it so. I mean, yeah obviously people should expect a large meatball sub to be high in calories....but a SALAD? More calories than a Big Mac?!?! C'mon! That almost seems like false advertising to me since it IS advertised as the healthy alternative.0 -
Only McDonald's could make such a healthy food bad for you!0
-
yes true, but i was wondering how can you make oatmeal unhealthy? especially if you don't add the brown sugar packet they give you. it's just oatmeal and fruit? so next time are you saying i should just indulge in my egg mc muffin?0
-
I like the coffee there!0
-
Ok...I'm guess I'm crazy -- I love McDonald's oatmeal. I just count the calories...0
-
The sugar is from the cranberry/raisin blend and the brown sugar...u can get it without these things.

I was just about to say that. You can get it w/o the Brown Sugar. Still pretty good to me. I think about 230 calories or so. Of course dont eat it everyday, but if you put fruit in your own Oatmeal and Brown Sugar, same difference.0 -
its probably better to eat the mcdonalds oatmeal than the big mac though. for a mcdonalds product its not that bad.0
-
You just have to put McDonald's in front of any food and you know it isn't going to be good for you. LOL Yes, they can even make oatmeal unhealthy.
^^ This :laugh:0 -
I like Starbuck's Oatmeal much better, but its probably just as bad.0
