I am a Christian, Sunday School teacher and getting my Theology degree. One of my best friends for life is an Atheist, we joke about Scripture all the time. I love this thread, especially the Atheists quoting scripture, even if it's meant to be tongue in cheek at least you know it  I don't get offended when people don't believe, why should I? after all I posted my favorite scripture was "1 John 4: 8 whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love." How can I quote that and be angry about someone just not believing what I do?

Have a Blessed Day (No this is not condescending, I actually mean it  )

    I like you :)

I'm not a Christian, but I don't mind certain parts of scripture. I take it in as I would any other book I read. There are parts of any book that I like and dislike. That said,

I do like the part in Corinthians about love.

    BUT

I also love Odd Thomas: "..the most identifying trait of humanity is our ability to be inhumane to one another.”
And Alice in Wonderland: “I can't go back to yesterday because I was a different person then.”

^^ this ......OMG! I love the Off Thomas story line! *grumbles* gotta get those back from my sister.

Armaments, chapter two, verses nine through twenty-one:

Cleric: And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this thy hand grenade, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the Lord did grin. And the people did feast upon the lambs, and sloths, and carp, and anchovies, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats, and large chu...

Brother Maynard: Skip a bit, Brother...

Cleric: And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

The Song of Songs could, recited at the appropriate time and to the appropriate person, get you laid.
    Or slapped.
    Or thrown out of church.

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

    Matthew 6:5-6

    ETA: *mic drop

    BOOM

I think if there ever was a man named Jesus who preached peace and love, he would be absolutely disgusted and saddened at the atrocities that have been committed, and continued to be committed, in his name.

Yep, because if it doesn't support your stance, it's cherry-picked, right?

    Isn't it something like ..

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He makes me down to lie
Through pastures green he leadeth me the silent waters by
With bright knives he releaseth my soul
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places
He converteth me to lamb cutlets
For lo,m he hath great power and great hunger
When cometh the day we lowly ones
Through quiet reflection and great dedication
    Master the art of karate
    Lo, we shall rise up
And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water.

    2 Samuel 11:3
"Now when evening came David arose from his bed and walked around on the roof of the king's house, and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful in appearance. 3So David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, "Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?" 4David sent messengers and took her, and when she came to him, he lay with her; and when she had purified herself from her uncleanness, she returned to her house.…"

Sans the Sunday School teacher thing (though I do help with the kiddos) and the Theology degree (though my youth pastor would call me the Bible Geek)... I am the same way... My fave professor in college is an Atheist and so is one of my best friends that I have known since college.

That burn is way too high. No one expends vigorous effort finding incongruous, misogynistic, or offensive passages in the bible.

    2 John 1:9-11 ESV

"Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works."
