Any flexitarians? How do you explain your diet to others?

Great discussion! I was considering saying that I am a 'weekday vegetarian'. That is almost always true, and I'm not crazy strict on myself, but I think it gets the idea across.

Flexitarian is a strange, sorta new-agey term, I agree. It is synonymous with omnivore in terms of behavior, but I think it conveys a different ideology about food. Technically, everyone who eats any amount of meat is an omnivore.

Again, just to reiterate. I don't need a label for myself - I'm good with what I'm doing. I feel good about having made some real changes to my diet, and I'm continuing to try to reduce my meat consumption because that is my own personal goal. However, the concern here is that other people tend to need labels and categories to make sense of me. Right or wrong, that's the reality in my experience. So I'm just trying to figure out the best way to respond to offend the least number of people - I don't want to offend vegetarians by claiming to be one when i'm not and i don't want to offend meat-eaters by being seemingly judgmental about their preferences.

the 'it sounded good' thing will work well at restaurants, but not when i pre-order a vegetarian option. then, i often don't know what it will be.. i just know it won't have meat. so it doesn't really make sense to say it sounded good when i didn't know what it would be.

Last summer I met someone who is primarily 811 (80/10/10, low-fat raw vegan) but she drinks alcohol and eats animals. I don't ever eat animals but I developed my own way of saying what she explained to me. I try to focus on frutis and vegetables first. Our diet is fruit and vegetable forward. Ultimately, it doesn't mean you ever have to worry about a "gotcha" when you want ribs, or even McDonald's, but it explains why you may prefer vegetarian options or huge amounts of fruit and vegetables.

    Peace,

I will admit that I get a little irritated when people who do eat meat call themselves vegetarians, only because it seems like I have to field a lot of questions about why I don't eat fish, or chicken, or whatever ("...but my vegetarian friend eats fish!"). It also makes me a little nervous when I'm eating food prepared by other people, because then I'm never sure if they understand that vegetarian really does mean NO meat.

So true! Or when people think picking the meat out of food is no big deal and act offended when you don't want to eat pizza with the bacon picked off it.

this is all very clearly understandable, which is why i want to be sensitive about this. thanks for your inputs!

Just to clarify, most vegetarians ARE omnivores (since there seem to be a lot of replies stating "you're not a vegetarian, you're an omnivore"). Most vegetarians are NOT herbivores, because they still eat some animal-based foods, like dairy products and eggs.

    Vegans are herbivores.

I like being an opportunivore, myself. :drinker:

I rarely justify any of my choices to anyone and very few people press me about it. Maybe I just give off a "this is not open for discussion" vibe.

eta: honestly I'd probably say something snippy. "Why did you order the vegetarian option?" Because that's what I wanted to order.

How about, "The vegetarian dish sounded good to me, today" and leave it at that?

Agreed. I'm not sure there needs to be a label for every possible diet out there.

I have milk and a bagel every morning. Let it be known from this day forth, this eating style shall now be referred to as Milkagle-Ante-Meridiem-tarian. (TM)

Makes sense! I think I would still couch it in positive terms ("I'm trying to eat more vegetables" or "lately, vegetables have been sounding really good to me") if you're worried about meat eaters feeling judged. Some people can take other people's preferences really personally, so if you keep it focused on what you like to eat (instead of what you don't/won't eat), it can make situations easier for everyone to deal with.

Yep. It is the only thing that annoys me on this front ( okay and the how do you get protein rubbish, for that I usually look at myself, look at them and then ask do I look remotely deficient). And then I feel like a PITA when I have to ask what kind of stock did you use, or did you show the dish fish sauce or Worcestershire sauce. I usually say we can't split a pizza because the porky goodness of pepperoni or sausage never stays on its side. It always wants everyone else to taste how wonderful it is and spreads itself out.

If I know you I generally will ask one or 2 questions and then eat away. My friends often change dishes to fit. I am sure I 've had a meat stock somewhere along the way but I've never decided to eat animals since summer of 1997. And I am that non-animal eater who will highly suggest that some meat dish sounds lovely for those who eat it.
And I am very sensitive when I have folks over. I always ask what allergies, restrictions, or aversions a guest has because no one wants to slave over a lovely borscht to discover you hate beets or a lovely berry tart and discover you have an allergy to berries.
Or serve pancakes for supper and you are gluten-free and sugar-free right now.

That reminds me, once we were eating with a couple and it was clear he wanted to "pick" on me for not eating animals. He had no idea who he was messing with. ( We serve our dog raw meat and I've been known to rip the faces off of soft-shell crabs). So when my husband asked what kind of food he wanted ( my husband meant, Thai versus, diner, versus modern, versus steak house if you get my drift) he bellowed meat. My husband left the restaurant choice, as usual to me.

I picked this awesome restaurant that loved vegetables but it's pulse beat strongly for offal. When we got to the restaurant the meat eater freaked out because pretty much all of the animal dishes were parts, trotters, hearts, sweetbreads, etc. I had a great time suggesting trotters & heart for him from the menu and the husband went with it and ordered offal for all of his starters and had an animal-free main dish with me.

Okay, laughing to hard between bites of roasted sweet potato at the look on his face when he read the menu.
  • I still fail to see why "it sounded good" wouldn't work if somebody questions your choice from a list of options for a meal taking place in the future.

Like at conferences? I do it all the time. I'm NOT a vegetarian, but the vegetarian offering at conferences etc is usually better. I say that openly: oh, yeah, the vegetarian option usually tastes better at these things...

or.... "I was hoping it would be pasta". or "last year it was polenta and I was jealous...." or or or.

on planes: "I've never been a fan of airplane meat, blech".

I travel a lot and make very strategic meal ordering decisions lol.

We should be friends! My cat is raw-fed, and I've bought and hacked up beef hearts for her (well, 1/4 hearts. Those things are massive!)

Nope. No to this. You answer "No, I'm not a vegetarian" because you still eat meat. It doesn't matter how little meat you consume, you consume it. To call yourself a vegetarian would be an insult. You aren't a "flexitarian" either, you eat meat. You're a normal person that isn't that into meat. You don't call yourself anything.

    What she said

Why do you even feel the need to label yourself based on the food you do or do not eat? If you want to be technical, you are on omnivore, you just don't eat meat often. If someone feels the need to question why you ordered a vegitarian dish, as them why the ordered what they did. Seriously, people making up labels for themselves and their eating habits is getting ridiculous. Eat what you like and get on with life

QFT. Both of them. It's so ridiculous, I couldn't decide which rational, easy explanation to offer. Good grief.

Thank you for considering how to describe yourself in a way that won't offend others. When people ask you, just say you like a lot of vegetarian meals. If someone presses you, they have invited you to tell them about your beliefs. I personally don't like to debate my food choices so I just smile and tell the person that it's not something I want to talk about right now.

I honestly think the term flexitarian is meaningless. It will probably invite lots of questions and opinions. Just like someone who eats burgers sometimes isn't vegan, somebody who eats meat a few times a week doesn't really need to qualify how they eat. Labels are there to help with communications and clarity. If someone is willing to eat meat, I can't see any reason to mention it to anybody unless you want to have a discussion. "I don't eat a lot of meat, but nope, not a vegetarian," should be adequate.

    flexitarian? lol

seriously though. if you eat meat, and someone asks if you're a vegetarian, the correct answer is no. and that's just fine. there's nothing wrong with an omnivore that enjoys or even prefers vegetarian meals... and you should never have to justify asking for one.

    Does it insult YOU?

Also, if someone is so concerned with my eating habits as to get offended? I genuinely couldn't care less. That's ridiculous. If I want to call myself a T-Rex and only eat salad, why should that be offensive? Weird. This should not be something one should have to consider...

As for the OP, I agree you aren't a vegetarian. If anyone asks why you got the vego option, just tell them it sounded good or just say "no, I just don't eat much meat". I'm not a vegetarian, but I really like tofu and often get asked if I am a vego when I order it. My answer "No? I like tofu."

    "Are you a vegetarian?"
    "No"
"Why aren't you eating the meat dish?"
    "Because I wanted this."

I'm a vegetarian (lacto-ovo). I am noticing more and more meat-eaters choosing the vegetarian option at catered events because it's often so much more tasty. It's often the difference between roasted acorn squash with a maple glaze risotto vs. bland chicken with broccoli. Winner winner, risotto dinner.

It seems a little bizarre that you would have to explain omnivorism using new terminology to justify your eating habits. Humans have omnivore teeth. It shouldn't take much to extrapolate from that that you might choose to eat a little meat now and then, but generally find vegetables more agreeable or palatable.
