A Challenge - Make Me Like Eating Fish
Replies

I tried this myself...I want to eat because its so good for us but I've tried everything...cooked so many different ways. I just don't like it! Except tuna fish for some reason...lol
I hope you have better luck than me!0 -
I hate fish, but I dont mind tilapia. It doesnt have much of a taste at all, so I'm sure you can season it with anything.0
-
I can't stand fish either... so bumping this for some fish lovin' advice0
-
Bump b/c I'm in the same boat. I want to like it!
Don't you love how the only replies are people who want to like it but don't?0 -
I can't stand fish either!! I HATE IT!
But I will eat canned tuna when i'm pregnant. (Which i know i shouldn't) The past few weeks i have eaten canned tuna about 4 times. I LOVE it with some noodles, Light Miracle Whip, Green onions and a little bit of mustard.
But other then that I can't stand it :sick:0 -
Yes! It is awesomely helpful!
Actually, it's nice to know it isn't just me. When I say I don't like fish, most people look at me like I just told them a story about punching a baby in the face or something.
At the very least, we can all form a fish-hating club. I mean eating fish. I don't hate fish as individuals - just as food.0 -
Tilapia or Haddock marinated in Teriyaki sauce and then baked or pan sauteed is delicious and only tastes like the sauce. White fish in general will take on the flavor of whatever you cook them in/ with.0
-
How do I cook it so it doesn't have the texture of insulation?0
-
I have never liked fish either. I have a friend who hails from the Dominican Republic, and man, let me tell you, when she cooks fish I just can't get enough!!!!! Whenever I ask her how she makes such good fish, she simply replies "What can I say- I'm an island girl!" Though I don't have any recipes for you, I would check out fish recipes from the Dominican Republic. Any kind of fish my friend makes is super delishious!0

Good, quality fish is key. The older it is, the "fishier" it is. Look for recipes that have you cook the fish with other ingredients in a packet (parchment paper or aluminum foil) as that imparts a lot of additional flavor that can mask the fish taste. Italian dressing does wonders for fish when cooked in a packet. Start off with milder, white-fleshed fillets (tilapia, sole, snapper, trout) and work your way up to stronger flavored, colored steaks (tuna, swordfish, salmon). Order sole at a reputable seafood restaurant and you'll be a convert!! I also recently read a tip in "My Life in France" by Julia Child that recommended soaking fish in a mixture of white vinegar and water for at least 5 hours before cooking to reduce the fishiness, but unfortunately it didn't give ratio of water to vinegar. Try searching for an answer to that online.0

i used to hate it. then one day i just decided to try some and i guess my tastes had changed. i mean I don't love it like i do cheese or chicken but if i get bored of other proteins, i'll bake some salmon.
i like to just cut a few slices of onion and lemon/orange, coat it in a little bit of olive oil and cracked pepper then bake it all together.0 -
Be careful you're not over or under cooking it.. that makes a HUGE difference. Baking is probably the best way to get an even cook all the way through.
I looooove baked salmon. I slice up a lemon or 2 and lay the slices in a pan in a line, throw the fish on top of the lemon, and top with more lemon slices. 350 degrees for about 20 minutes and yummy.
Tilapia is really good with salsa, you can throw some salsa in a skillet and cook the fish in with it about 4 minutes on a side. Only flip it once though! The fish will absorb the flavor of the salsa and you can use it in tacos or eat it with black beans or something like that.
Blackened or cajun seasoning is perfect for most mild fish. Any white fish is a good way to start because you can mask it and work your way up.
FISH ARE FRIENDS, *AND* FOOD!0 -
Thanks to the fish lovers and the fish haters. At least we have some ideas to try, right fish haters?0
-
hate it to0
-
Fish is great if you know how to prepare it correctly.0
-
fish...horrible! my sister loves it and has told me how to cook it what is the most mild and i still hate it! now she says ya you'll never like it...lol0

I used to hate fish too - turned out my mom just didn't know how to cook it right. Here are two things I like.
1. Shrimp scampi with asparagus - 12-18 raw shrimp, lightly sauted in 1 Tbs olive oil and 1 Tbs butter with lots of chopped garlic. (You can also add a dash of dill.) Cook shrimp 3 minutes and flip them. Add chopped asparagus and continue sauteing until asparagus looks bright, but not limp. (about 3 more minutes). Take pan off heat, ad 1/4 cup lemon juice. Stir. Serve over hot pasta. Serves 2 people.
2. Sushi - I can't make sushi, but my gosh I love to eat it. It doesn't taste fishy at all, which is what most of us hate. My favorite is ahi or hamachi tuna. They taste nothing like canned tuna! Nothing! Give it a try. You'll love it.0 -
If it's the texture you don't like try mashing it in with your potatoes!0

Tilapia is the least "fishy" of all fish. You can mix a little parmesan cheese with black pepper and basil and coat the fish filets in it. Then bake them. You must make sure the fish is done cooking, If it doesn't flake apart easily with a fork, it isn't done. Undercooked fish is the grossest thing.
I also find that with food I don't like, preparing, handling, cooking it makes it worse for me. I got into eating fish by starting out in restaurants. It was way easier when someone else handled the raw food. You might also try the Sea Cuisine Tortilla Crusted Tilapia from Costco. All you have to do is put it in the oven from frozen. It is delicious.0 -
i just tried cooking tilapia for the 1st time yesterday, and it turned out so yummy! i seasoned with lemon pepper, sea salt, crushed garlic, old bay seasoning, and thyme. then i drizzled with one tsp olive oil. broil on low for 7 min or until done.
with salmon, my fave recipe is maple salmon from allrecipes.com: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Maple-Salmon/Detail.aspx. great taste!0 -
I am SO with you. I have hated fish and all other seafood for as long as I can remember. The only seafood I can tolerate is when it's fried to kingdom come, which is completely delicious and completely horrible for me!
So, I appreciate all of the tips here too. I have now been emboldened again to try baking/pan searing white fish...
Good luck, fish haters! ; )0 -
I also order fish when we go out. Almost anyone can cook fish better than I can! I have had some very delicious fish dishes when eating out, but I KNOW I couldn't replicate them at home.
We do like to get the 1 lb. shrimp plate CostCo sells for about $10. My hubby and I get 2 meals out of it: plain cold shrimp with cocktail sauce on night #1 and shrimp Quesadillas or tacos or salad on day #2.
We also grill some of the "meatier" fish, like tuna steaks or swordfish or salmon. I don't know much about the relative health benefits of different types of fish so these might not be great choices...0 -
Salmon with tai cremefraiche
Mix together some creme fraiche with a tsp of tai green paste, spread onto a salmon fillet, wrap in foil and place in the over for 10-15 minutes.
That is delicious.
Have you just ever tried just pan frying fish? Just get a pan with some oilive oil in, a bit of garlic if you like and just pop your peice of fish in when the oil is hot. leave the fish a few minutes and then turn over. Don't keep moving it around or it wont crisp up. My Oh doesn't really like fish but he loves a bit of pan fried salmon.
I like it steamed, when i cook my pasta/rice or potatoes i make a little foil plate to put over the saucepan (poke a couple of holes in to let steam through) put my salmon on it then put the saucepan lid on and it steams the fish while your cooking whatever in the pan underneath.
I don't often put anything on my fish apart from a bit of garlic as i hate lemon and that seems to be all people put on it.
You could poach it in milk, on the stove top or in the oven and use the milk to make a parsley sauce to pour over the top.
Tht is literally just milk, flour and butter/marg just add into a pan and whisk, no need for a roux, then add chopped parsley. Season to taste.0 -
if you like spice, try mackeral in piri piri sauce - usually sold at your local supermarket.0

I own a Scottish Smoked Salmon company, and I am ALLERGIC to salmon boohoohooo!
I dont like strong tasting fish, but eat a lot of seabass. Heres what I do..
In an ovenproof dish, spray a small spray of one cal oil( dont know US equivalent?)..
chop fresh herbs such as coriander (cilanrto) and parsely
Add garlic, lemongrass, ginger and chopped fresh chillis
Add heaped tablespoon of splenda sweetener sugar alternative
Place four slices of lime laid out so each fillet of seabass covers over two slices lime
Place seabass skin side up, on top
Spray with one cal oil
Add small drop boiled water
Bake in oven
Serve with a tablespoon low fat creme fraiche on top
Yummy - cannot beat it!!!!0 -
I had baked fish out at a restaurant last night - It was baked in a little white wine and had feta cheese, chopped tomatoe, and cooked spinach on top with some greek seasoning. Was delicious...........
I bake haddock at home with some cajun spice - it doesn't take long in the oven - when it begins to flake apart with a fork - it is done.0 -
I don't like fish either! So, I tried a thin piece of Cod.....not fishy at all......just a little salt and pepper......bake or fry......and
if I need it, Malt Vinegar.....still not my fav thing but I can eat this. Hope you'll try it.0 -
Get Tilapia Loins. Why, they do not taste like fish. Roll in cornmeal and pan fry in butter or your preferred oil. I usually use Adobo seasoning on mine. They are also perfect in soup. Great grilled. Mahi Mahi, and Haddock are also very mild. Cod too.
Salmon can be a challenge. I usually Cajun Blacken them or make a
sweet pepper sauce(Sweet Peppers, Tomatoes(fresh, canned, paste, marinara, spaghetti sauce, etc),
olive oil and one wild caught cockeye salmon filet.
Sautee peppers,
add salmon(minute or two each side).
Add Tomato, bring to a simmer, cover, 15 minutes,
uncover, let reduce to your liking.
Ocean perch just wreaks to high heaven and taste like a garbage can.
Catfish can usually be soaked in milk. I never have too.
Walleye and Pike is just, well, plain old AWESOME. - Pan Fried much like Tilapia loin
Some fish from I think Vietnam but can't remember the name.
My teenage daughter will eat any of the above pan fried or grilled if a make her a sauce. Even barbecue sauce works well.
Can't recall any other fish type I've had lately0 -
I love fish, you could make chinese flavored salmon with soy sauce and ginger cooked in a skillet. Parmesan incrusteed tilapia is the stuff, it's yummu and fried flounder doesn't really taste too much like fish. Enjoy :happy:0

Oh, shouldn't have mentioned. Thai curry paste, chili garlic paste, etc. Tablespoon + 1-3 Tablespoon oil. Heat up oil and paste, throw fish chunks in. Let cook then toss in your stir fry veggies for a minute or two. If you want to take it towards authentic Thai you can use some coconut creme or milk int the stir fry's too.
You can take the stir fry to soup. Try different concentrations of seafood broth, tamarind soup bases, veggie broth, any flavor really.
Curry's are fantastic. Not only with seafood but beef, pork, chicken. OMG drooling now. Must have jungle curry.0
