Muffin Top and Jean Sizing

How do you determine your jean size? For instance, me, I can wear an 18 in certain brands but I have a muffin top. And size 20 fits comfortably with no muffin top so that's what I consider my size to be. I see these thin (thinner than me) girls who wear jeans that are way too small and their stomach fat hangs out all around the top of their jeans. Makes me want to scream 'GO UP A SIZE!'
So do you determine your size by the muffin top also?

I have a lil muffin top, but if i go up a size it won't fit in the legs.0

I am the same as you, in an 18 I have a huge muffin top, in a 20 I am comfortable with a hand space, so I say I am a comfortable 20 getting towards an 18, I hate muffin tops and camel toes!!!!0

I have the same problem..... The legs and butt become too big so I stick with the size even if it gives me muffin top. I imagine, eventually that part will go away soon.........0 -
i look at the over all fit. the bum and legs are most important for me but that being said a muffin top is hard to escape and likely the jeans don't stay up. Currently i have a muffin top pair since i am losing weight and in between sizes0

I think it depends on the person body shape and the brand/type of jeans. Like she said above me sometimes I'll have a muffin top but if I go up a size its comfy on my waist and too big in the legs.0

I was thinking this , I'm a 14 in top but my tummy still a 16 but my legs well they are no way a 16 as my work trousers are mega lose around my legs , but i can't stand my tummy being squeezed into a 14 atm (0

And I am the opposite... Considering I am pear shaped... I have to fit my hips but then sometimes (depending on the brand) the waste is too big.
Its a catch 22 when you are dieting! haha so I just wear my too big pants with a belt! one more month baby and I am buying new clothes!0 -
I wear my jeans so it hides that muffin top. I think you looks slimmer this way. no one knows what size jeans your wearing. but they can see how you look with belly flab hanging over top, and it looks horrible.
I wore size 16 jeans for the longest time, just to hide my stomach. and it was more motivation to try and get out of that larger size pants.0 -
Amen!: laugh: I think muffin tops look terrible and would rather my jeans fit big in the butt and legs that fat hanging over the top. Muffin tops & camel toes, not pretty.0

I go by the muffin top too! If it doesn't fit in the waist, then I go up a size.0

I struggle with it because I'm short (5'2) so most jeans are too long and too wide around the legs. But, for me, I'm more comfortable with baggy legs and hem dragging on the floor than I am with a muffin top. So I guess to each his own!0

I was in denial of my 'Muffin Top' before my journey of weigh loss...
I believed it started when I had to buy a 30 waist jeans...never in my life.
Now, I'm back into my 28 waist jeans - with no muffin top...
It only took me 3 months to get rid of it...
Yes, girls who wear tight jeans and muffin tops is not very attractin' - unless guys like that lol...:laugh:0 -
I hate jeans!!! All my weight is in my mid section. I have relatively smaller legs andno booty at all! but when i buy jeans that fit my legs i have a muffin top and if i buy jeans that fit my waist they are gigantic on my legs and hang off my butt! I cant win either way...are most peoples bodies like that? I think im going to start getting my jeans tailored LOL0

I feel the same way. Before my son I was a size 6 but they were a little to tight and i felt like I had a muffin top. So i would wear a size 8 even thought they could fall off.
Now i am losing my baby weight and wear my 10's and 8's Problem with the size up is then I get butt crack showing or thong showing...soooo annoying.
I call the girls that wear a size way to small "I CAN STILL FIT INTO THESE JEANS" They just dont want to mentally admit they are a size bigger.0 -
HA HA! I see many measure their waist at their belly button and then the muffin/pouch below. I tend to buy jeans that are right above the belly button (no low rise for me until I lose the pouch/muffin top) to smash the pouch in LOL, so the jeans have to be large enough to fit over everything and be comfortable at the same time. When I sit the muffin top/pouch can all be contained.0

SAME! its so obnoxious! i usually buy a pants size bigger (depressing) and let the legs be baggy because I'm self concious about my midsection0 -
This is always an issue!! I prefer to wear a little bit looser pants with a belt and reduce the muffin top as much as possible. The muffin top is what I look down and see and therefore it makes me less comfortable and confident. They are a bit loose in the legs and butt, but at this moment I prefer it that way since it shows that I am losing instead of looking like I am trying to force myself into a smaller size and that I really havent lost.0

i am the same way!! i feel your pain! small skinny legs and no butt (at least yet, im working on it though)!! I have been doing the Jillian micahels no more trouble zones and have notice my body toning up on my sides, backside and midsection!!0 -
LOL....I would think no one would want to walk around with muffin top. They are uncomfortable.0

I'm short, too. I've found jeans at Old Navy that are short enough and ride a little lower so that my belly doesn't make a muffin top. I will NEVER go back to jean that sit at the waist. Ouch!0 -
All those style people say fit the waist and if you have to, have the rest altered, which is actually really cheap.
Personally, as I've lost weight, there was no way I was going to spend much on jeans that I would hopefully be to small to wear in a few months (I've gone through several sizes fairly quickly). I've just kept trying different brands to find jeans that fit my body.
I say try all different styles, you might be surprised what fits you best. I've tried all different brands and styles and have been pretty surprised by the difference in rises.0 -
I have the opposite issue! My thighs are so bit, I have to buy to fit them, and go get the waist tailored in. But you should always, always, always buy jeans to fit the biggest part of you and then tailor the other parts.
I also hate jeans - I find the trouser style jeans fit me the best, but they are hard to find!!!0 -
I'm a UK size 16 with a muffin top, 18 if I want to keep it sleek round the waistline, but that tends to give me a baggy bum and thighs. My first promise to myself on starting MFP was to never buy size 18 again, so that muffin has to go!0

I use my tummy as a way to size my pants. There are some jeans from college that are a little small and show the muffin top, so I tend to wear those with a sweatshirt. But the newer pants that I am buying, I make sure that they hide the muffin top, because it's so not attractive...0

I used to like muffins, until the "muffin top" trend started. These girls are obviously insecure and don't own or use a mirror before they leave home in the morning. The worst is the muffin top with the short top! Seen some muffin tops that were so bad, they caused me to coin a new phrase: "jiffy pop". Think about what the jiffy pop popcorn container looks like when the corn has been popped. Wear what's comfortable for you...never mind the size: the size of your jeans and the number on your scale are just numbers. While they should count for something, you can't let them run your life. Good Luck.0

So, I watched a show this morning that talked about this. Helpful, because I am SO wearing the wrong size jeans. They were saying to get rid of the muffin top you should take 2 fingers, place them at the bottom of your belly button, and that's where the top of your jeans should fall (for style.) Also, when figuring out your waist size in jeans, don't take the measurement of the smallest part of your waist - take the measurement of where your hands go when you rest them on top of your hips. Makes it seem like you're wearing a bigger size, but no one needs to know what that number is but you - and you look better with better fitting jeans.0

You have to remember that you lose size in your extremeties first and then your trunk last.
So your legs and butt will be smaller than your waist.
You just gotta give it time and wear shirts that are loose around the waist.0 -

I so agree trying different brands and different styles and fits is the way to go.
I love American Eagle jeans style Boy friend fit. They are sooo comfortable! Or Lucky jeans mid rise. I love them because then I dont have to worry about my thong showing.0 -
I've found that I'm loving higher waisted jeans for this reason!!! LOL! I feel like an old granny sometimes, but the darn junior sizes show my crack when I sit down and cause me to muffin top all the time! I'm short and small boned so I have the issue with length too, especially since my weight is mostly around my gut. Being so darn short makes 5 lbs looks like a ton of extra weight on me, but I'm back into my 5s but with a little muffin top, so I usually wear my 7s to cover it or I opt for a "classic" rise... LOL! I'm telling ya though, not worrying about my butt crack hanging out and no muffin top... classic is the way to go, LOL! However with classic, since most of my weight is around my middle I have to still be up a size to fit my waist and then its baggy through the thighs. SIGH. If I can lose my baby gut (Funny how the "baby" gut problem started before I had a baby, now I can call it that though, LOL!) maybe I'll be able to wear "fashionable" jeans again...0

I gave up looking at jean sizes, because going up a size would 'depress' me. I bought a size 12 back in December, because I realized I would rather a larger jean size than where a 10 and hang over the top. Surprisingly, because my jeans fit correctly, people actually thought I had lost weight!!!
The day will come when I can fit those 10s again (comfortably) and there will be much rejoicing on my part
I am super short (five feet tall), so I have made a point to shop in the petite section for jeans and haven't had as many problems. My butt may not have as awesome as a WOW factor (as the selection is smaller), but I prefer it to looking like I'm too fat for my jeans. I was even able to find a pair of 'skinny jeans' (the leg style) that didn't make me look absolutely horrible that I use when Im going out and want to wear a cute pair of boots0
