"Don't eat anything you don't like" SO TRUE .. if you do not like it spit it out ... find something you can really live with and you enjoy ... if you do not really like it you will not stick with it .. after all we are trying to do life stye changes .. not diets per say ...0

I loooove oatmeal. If I cook the regular kind (instead of the quaker microwaveable packets) I prepare it with the water and then after it is cooked I will add some truvia (natural sweetner) and two tablespoons of skim milk and some fruit--especially blueberries (YUM!)
Other variations I like are the milk and truvia and about two tablespoons of pure maple syrup for a different flavor (a little more calories though).
AAAAND if I am having a chocolate craving I will do the milk and truvia with 1 tablespoon of chocolate chips and it is soooooo good and tastes like a no-bake cookie Hope this helps!0 -
I was never an oatmeal fan, hell I never ate breakfast until I started using MFP, but I knew I needed to start so I bought the Quaker Hearty Medley's to try out and I really like em! The two I've tried are apple/cranberry/almond and a banana/walnut. If you're still willing to give oatmeal a shot, I would recommend trying some of these! I don't go one day without oatmeal in the morning now!0

I use Coachs Steel Cut Oatmeal from costco. I add Max muscle vanilla Protein to in and it is pretty good. sometimes I also add blurberries to that.0

Forcing yourself to eat something you hate is not a good start. Healthy eating is not a punishment. Don't eat it anymore!!

I put a tablespoon of craisins and chopped walnuts in it and I use Truvia as sweetner. I love it like this, also, it tastes better made with skim milk. I eat oatmeal at least 3-4 x a week. HOpe that helps you out! U can substitute any dry fruit you like for the craisins, e.g. blueberries, strawberries, etc. :flowerforyou:0

I add any type of berry and a little yogurt OR Nuts, cinnamon, raisins or craisins, and a little honey. And a dash of salt helps, too.0

Oatmeal is my favorite breakfast, add raisins, a little butter , and a dash of milk or soy milk. Very Tasty!!! The 5 min. variety is better for you. Good luck learning to enjoy it!!!0

I HATE oatmeal but made myself eat it for awhile when dealing with some health issues. I put a pile of frozen red raspberries or blueberries on top and microwaved it and put in just a little 1% milk and it wasn't that bad!0

You could try some alternative grains that aren't oatmeal. I'm not the hugest oatmeal fan but I do like eating grains for breakfast.
Try cooking quinoa (on the stove or in a rice cooker). I cook 1 part quinoa, 2 parts water in my rice cooker, then add some vanilla light soymilk to it (it's only 80 cals per cup, and I usually only add 1/3 of a cup or so). Sprinkle with some cinnamon, add in some berries or raisins, and a bit of vanilla extract - delicious. It keeps well in the fridge and you can eat it cold, too.
I also love kasha (roasted buckwheat). I cook it with half water, half vanilla soymilk, and again add cinnamon, vanilla extract, and raisins or berries. Top with a splash of pure maple syrup for added sweetness if you want, and are ok with some sugar.
I've also tried amaranth for breakfast... it's not as high up on my favourites list because it seemed to take a lot longer to cook, and I like the texture of quinoa and kasha better.

I like my instant oatmeal packets (100 calories) + fat free milk (90 calories) + a tsp of brown sugar (10 calories). = 200 calorie breakfast.
Add cranberries or a spoonful of vanilla granola and it's a treat
I also like eating my breakfast with a banana. 300 calories for the morning is a good start!0 -
I know instant oatmeal is not as healthy as rolled oats but I love wild blueberry from Quaker. Super yummy and very filling. I am a nurse and it holds me over on busy days. BTW. I use water and splenda in mine.0

I don't think you should force yourself to eat something you don't like while dieting. I know oatmeal is good for you and a great tool to losing weight. However, I can't stand it and I won't eat it. Just find something that you like. Dieting should be about learning to eat new things but also enjoying them at the same time. good luck0

I agree that you shouldn't eat something you hate just because its good for you, there are plenty of other healthy choices out there. I really love oatmeal, I buy the Quaker old fashioned oats too. I use unsweetened almond milk instead of water, add 1/8 cup of raisins and walnuts to the milk and season with cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice. My husband loves it too! Hope you find a way to enjoy it!0

I'm not quite sure how long it would take to get used to it... some people just don't like some things, but I can share how I like my oatmeal.
I love playing around with ingredients but the base for my oatmeal is always:
-1/3 cup rolled oats
- 1/3 cup 1% milk (or skim)
- 1/3 cup water
- 1 medium banana (adds the perfect amount of sweetness and a slight banana flavor)
Then when the basic oatmeal is cooked, I add a splash of vanilla extract, and mix in whatever sounds good to me... sometimes it's strawberries and blueberries, sometimes it's dried apples and cinnamon, sometimes strawberries and pomegranate, and sometimes i'll just mix in a tablespoon of peanut butter and top it with some semisweet chocolate chips for a peanut butter cup flavored oatmeal.... the possibilities are endless!!! (i've even tried recipes like carrot cake oatmeal or pumpkin pie oatmeal). Feel free to experiment with things that excite you!0 -
Go to the Quaker Oatmeal website and it has recipes on there you can try. I love a half of a cut up banana in mine with a packet or two of Stevia.0

I love steel cut oats and Coach's Oats (we get the huge bag from Costco).
I always add banana, walnuts, honey, sweetened almond milk, and/or blueberries to mine. I'm not looking for low-cal in the morning. I'm looking for a ton of energy for the day!0 -
I'm not the biggest fan of oatmeal. But I def like it better when its made w/ milk. And I perfer it to have strawberrys in it, maybe a few nuts or raisins. But you guys have some good ideas I'd like to try....0

Oatmeal, in my opinion, is disgusting. Just find something else to eat.

It's not just "that it's not as healthy." It's clearly unhealthy, as it is precooked and has a much higher glycemic level than regular (or steel-cut) oatmeal. It digests so quickly, the body treats it like a sugar. And, it has a lot of ADDED sugar. It may seem low-calorie, but it's as unhealthy as a kid's sugary breakfast cereal. Instant oatmeal is about as far away from an oat as bleached white cake flour is to a wheatberry. And then, most people cook it in the microwave, and there's always controversy about nutritional damage from that. (?I don't know?)
Regular oatmeal *which you can get much cheaper if you buy in bulk*(plus environmentally better since you don't use the packaging) also cooks up quickly in the microwave. But if you have time, the best is steel-cut oats. If you soak them in the pot overnight, you can cook it up as quick as rice in the morning, or just cook it overnight in a crockpot!
Then add your own blueberries (I use frozen most of the time), flaxseed, whatever, and choose your own form of sweetener.0 -

the fat in peanut butter is actually great for you anddd if you keep the peanut butter cold and don't melt it too much it will taste like ice cream chunks in the sea of tasteless oatmeal hhaha hope that helped0 -
Another way to include oats in your diet without tasting them is to blend a 1/4 cup into your smoothie.
My recipe:
1 cup unsweetened almond milk: 35 cal
1/4 cup rolled or regular oats: 75 cal
1/2 cup frozen mixed berries: 40 cal
1 scoop vanilla EAS 100% whey protein powder: 130
1 tbsp Hershey's dark unsweetened cocoa powder: 10 cal
-Blend until smooth. 290 calories total.0 -
I mix a scoop of vanilla protein powder (Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey Protein, vanilla ice cream flavor is my favorite) into the oatmeal and mix in either fresh cut apples and cinnamon, or bananas, raisins and walnuts, or lite maple syrup, or pb, etc. I think it tastes yummy and the protein and the fruit make oatmeal a super food. http://www.menshealth.com/nutrition/abs-diet-weekly-meal-plan-recipes0
