The trainer pissed me off!

I have been going to local chain gym for the past week. I have been so pumped to get going again. This gym offered one free training session. I took them up on it. I knew there would be a sales pitch later on and was I in for a treat.
This young 20 something year old kept pushing me to sign up today. I kindly explained my partner was out of the country and this is something I need to discuss with him. His response was "Do you need permission to purchase shoes too?" I was appalled. I was not going to let him talk down to me. I told him he was coming off to strong like an oily car salesman. I had nothing to prove to him but only myself. I also let him know that his body language screamed disappointment in losing a sale. He must have gone on and on about people he sees in and out who either injure themselves or don't see the changes they hoped for. I am an adult. I can make my own choices. If he approaches me once again. I will talk to the manager.
It makes me wonder that they are trained that way. Sixty dollars an hour is no drop in a bucket.

Seeing your location, now I need to know---which chain?

Anyone trying to sell you anything...
"No thanks."
(They carry on)
"No, I'm not interested."
End of conversation.
It took me long time to realise and feel comfortable with a direct negative - I think women are socialised out of it in particular. I used to end up giving excuses and reasons, but these are just routes into questioning you more. I have even been known to use 'What part of 'no' didn't you understand? Was it the 'n' part or the 'o' part?' If they make some comment like 'all of it' I say 'Okay well, no means the opposite of yes. It means stop asking me.'
I used to date an experienced salesman who claimed he could find a way to keep anyone talking while he changed their mind about the product but even he admitted he had no comeback to a direct 'no'.0 -
I smile and say no, too - it really does work.
I'm sorry that you had such a bad experience0 -
"His response was "Do you need permission to purchase shoes too?""
I'm going to go WAY out on a limb here, and say this guy is a terrible person to be in a relationship with. Anyone who thinks it's degrading to coordinate decisions with your partner is not someone you want to be in an LTR with.0 -

Had he said that to me, my response would have been, "Annnnnd just lost a sale. Well done."

anyone who would be swayed by that kind of condescending holery really does need permission before buying anything more complicated than a soda from a vending machine.
one of the reasons i chose planet fitness is because they don't push you on ANYTHING. they wait for you to come to them with questions, whether it's about sessions with a trainer or any of their other services. if i want or need something, i'm smart enough to know where to go. other than that, they leave me alone and let me do my thing.

Oh yeah, planet fitness. lol.0

I must be the only one not phased by that.... but I do agree it's unprofessional and tacky.0

looks like you know where you WONT get a personal trainer if you get one!0

The guy at my gym told me I should sacrifice my already stretched-thin-reward of going out to dinner in order to reach my goals and get personal training.
I eat out once a week to stay sane.
He proceeded to question how serious I was about my fitness goals because I wouldn't buy.0 -

If you actually lift weights, as your target is well known and respected for around here, you would understand his comment and the poor judgement of your defensive response. Carry on.0 -

Don't get me wrong, PF is a great training step. It can potentially help someone who is a complete neophyte get introduced to the fun that is testing oneself.
As a business though, they are even more cynical than I, and I personally feel, toxic for their customers.0 -

then maybe her comment could have been phrased in a less derisive, more "let me share my experience with you" manner. my response was appropriate for the level of respect she showed me.
despite the fact that i owe you no explanations, i am not a weight lifter and have never claimed to be. i do circuit/resistance training to preserve my lean body mass, help with overall strength and endurance, and simply because i enjoy it. my choice of gym and reasons for picking it have exactly zero impact on her or anyone else on this forum, and since i wasn't asking for advice in the first place, her response was inappropriate.

Do you know much about the chain gyms? There is one near me called fitness 19 I was going to check out. I am a very beginning beginner.0 -

Just go there and check the vibe, make sure the gear that you need is there. If they're professing a no-judgement zone, but then have an alarm with which they use to judge others... you might want to move on.

Ha, great come back. I'd want to say something similar, make sure he knows that kind of attitude isn't going to work AT ALL.0 -
My trainer pisses me off frequently...just can't get him to agree with me. It's me.0
