I had the same issue and it's most likely poor ankle flexibility, which takes a lot of stretching to improve. While I'm working on that, I used small plates under my heels to instantly correct the issue but felt a little too unstable with a heavy barbell.. which led to buying Olympic lifting shoes, which are incredibly supportive! I wear the Inov-8 Fastlift and I couldn't recommend them enough.

    seriously, third world? wtf.

I've heard it coined "asian squat" yeah, but never something as derisive as third world squat.

well done. Surprised even me this morning.

It's a stretching position. Google it.

LOL. Way to upsell it Captain understated. haha.

Just wanted to prepare him. LOL! The thing with SMR is that if it hurts, it means you need to be doing it.

Do they call them "Asian squats" while they're doing them in Africa? I get that "third world" can be offensive, but is "Asian squat" really any more accurate a term?

I tell my wife much the same about something else. She doesn't believe even though there is copious amounts of video evidence...

Can't tell if being creepy or just curious of my squat flexibility progression...

In slightly elevated shoes (squatting shoes), yes. In bare feet, I can get into the position, but can't stay there.

Zercher Squats suck, they only show how much you can hold in an arm cradle, doing Zercher Squats gives you herpies.

I've heard it called a grok squat before... or a pry squat if you use a bar/piece of equipment to help with a really upright aggressive stance to work that out.

But yeah- 3rd world took me a little askew as well.

Yeah, but hey, at least two (or was it three) people white knighted it. How am I not surprised?

Sam - if you don't Zercher, how you going to bring your dog back from a hike if they break their leg? ;)

we all know wtf it is.

that isn't the question- most of the people discussing it are more than well aware of it. and none of us have EVER called it that.

I was going to say- wtf would you want to do that- and the my gutter mind caught back up.

When I first started squatting and trying to improve my "get low" <read: to parallel and beyond> I would put my back up against the wall, and squat as low as I could go with my heels still on the floor. For me, this literally stretched everything from ankles, to hip flexors. I Still do these if I feel tight.

And I second the towel rack/smith machine. The only thing I use it for? A couple of women clients who are working on strength/lifting who can't quite use the 45 lb bar for an OHP. I will have them try a lighter weight on the smith....occasionally.

I might throw them into the mix at some point- I like doing a variety- I might actually go back to my old split way of lifting- less gains- more fun. Least for a season- in which case I'd start doing them for real for real. :p

Until you knock your t&bs. Then it kind sucks. Wanna make it real fun? Use rope or a rolled towel to hold the bar. ;)

How does the smith machine help with form?
    [/quote]

I have no idea! But I was told this my one of the trainers in my gym when I was struggling! Have never got the hang of the Smith myself but thought I was throwing in some helpful advice from another source. Sorry if I got it wrong - I still consider myself very much a beginner at using weights and stuff and very much learning as I go along. At least now I know my dislike of the Smith is justified! x

I'm pretty sure no one in a third world country is going to be cruising the interwebs and be offended by the term 3rd world squat.

I'm a simplest I guess. Just throw a barbell on my back and let me move some heavy weight or moderate weight for an *kitten* load of reps. The only other squat that I can see justification for is the front-squat or goblet squat, everything else is kind of nonsensical in my opinion.

Well how would you work on imbalance?

My last comment was geared towards other kinds of squats (i.e zercher, jefferson), not other leg movements (i.e. lunges). I guess I should've included split-squats as a useful squat exercise. If I had a client or athlete that had some imbalance issues I don't know that I would jump straight into barbell squats (front or back). It might be more appropriate to begin with some kind of DB work in the form of lunges or step-ups or even bodyweight work; it's just all depends on what is deficient or dysfunctional

To be clear, it's an exotic for fun. You can't do the same load with a Jefferson or a Zercher you could with the bar racked, so I see it as a good toy for a deload week. Now if someone is doing those as the foundation of their leg work... well, I don't know. Don't think it would end as well as they'd like.

Hey when it comes down to it, everybody has their own interests and approaches to exercise. If doing a zercher squat gets you motivated to get in the gym and exercise, then zercher it-up.

I do both back and Zercher. I find that it is similar to goblet but I can go way heavier with Zercher (I am at 165 lbs x8). For Jefferson I was doing Jefferson DL (is that the same as Jefferson squats?) because I hurt my back doing conventional DL and I still wanted to DL but the pain was too much. It enabled me to still DL (I was doing 260 lbs Jefferson which is 2x BW) until I was able to transition to sumo.
