Wow I don't know where some people on here buy their clothes. Vanity sizes are here. When I was in high school 30 years ago I weighed 117 and I wore a size 7.
I still can't get into anything smaller than a 14 in jeans right now and I weigh 156. In pants (maybe because they are not as stiff as jeans) I can get into a 12. I have a small frame and a fairly small waist - I'm a pear shape. I can fit a 12 over my hips in jeans but I can't button them, so I know it's not my hips and thighs.
Size is just a number and boy have they changed over the years.

Yeah, new sizing system as of 2011 or so. My "benchmark" jeans from 10 years ago are a size 6. They are a good 2-3 inches smaller than my current size 6 jeans (same brand, same store, basic boot cut jean from Kmart).

Contrast that with my high school size 9 or 11 (junior's sizing) jeans (early 1990's). I was a good 10+ pounds lighter and much slimmer than I am today (~5'6, 122-125lbs then).

Sizing system changes make thrift store/vintage clothing shopping very interesting. Can't shop by number in those stores.

yep, vanity sizing is dumb. i'm around 107 now at age 40. i was around the same weight in high school. back then i wore a size 6. now i'm a size 2. my guess is that i have more fat on my 40 year old body at this weight than i did at 18, so the size 6 might have even been an 8 back then in my current shape. based on more current sizes, i know my current size and my size at my highest weight. not sure about the in betweens though. it gets fuzzy.

    140 (highest weight) - 12, bordering on 14
    107ish - mostly size 2, sometimes 4

I'm 5'4" and an extreme pear shape. my sizes are not typical at all based on what i've seen.

I do agree about sizes changing. I weighed 170 lb back in 1989 (LOL) when I was 13 and at that time, I needed a size 14. Now at basically the same weight, 169 lb, I can wear a 10 pants or jeans almost anywhere unless it's unusually low rise.

Although maybe you should try some different brands and cuts, perhaps. 14 at 156 lb seems a little unusual compared to all of the other responses in this thread and others. Not saying cave to the vanity sizing, but I bet you would find other sizes that work for you because of the cut.

I was bordering on a size 14 at only 140 pounds. It is unusual, but it's based on mostly banana republic sizing which is pretty standard right now. that's just how my body is. i have wide hips.

    I'm 5'7

    110 lbs was a 1/2
    125 lbs was 3/4
140 lbs now and an squeezing in a 5/6. Realistically I could go up another size but I don't want to. Hence why I'm on this site.

I buy almost all my clothes second-hand, so I am probably dealing with the "old"sizing. My XL and L camisoles are too big, so I went and bought new ones in M.

    180 lbs size 16/18
    155 lbs size 14/12

I have some 14's that are really big and a size 12 skirt that is wearable, but not comfortable.

I'm 5'11 and I've been various weights over a 4 year span, here's what I remember. (all sizes in US, womens)

190+ (couldn't bring myself to get on the scale): VERY TIGHT 14 (40DD)
    180: Size 14
    170: Size 12
    160: Size 10 (34DDD)
    155: Size 8 (34DD)
    150: Size 6 (34D)
    143: Size 4 (32DD)

Shirt size went from XL to a Small. I gain and lose weight very distributed - no part gets heavier over the other.

I think the huge size difference between 160 & 150 was that I was working out more and my body shape was different than when I was heavier. I have no data south of 143, but for me a size 4 wasn't attractive. I liked what I looked like at a size 8, I have 10 pounds to go. Even though I have a pair of Gap Jeans in a 6 that I LOVED. I may be convinced to try and make them fit again once I get to where I think I should be.

5'5" and have been teetering between sizes 0 and 8 in pant sizes:

112-119 lbs: between a size 0 and 2; i would be able to literally slip a size 2 jean off my hips without unbuttoning it, however a size 0 was a big snug but i was able to button it.
120-129 lbs: once again, still between a 0 and 2 but not able to slide the size 2 off of me. still needed a belt. would not have been able to squeeze into a true size 0 though.
    ~129-135 lbs: 2-4
    ~136-145 lbs: 4-6
    ~146-156 lbs: 6-8

    as far as shirt sizes:
    115-130 SM
    131-140 MD
    141-156 MD/LG

    5'4"

    170- 12/14 pants, don't know about dresses
160-12 pants, 8 and 6 in A-line dresses, anything tight would need to be tailored so I only wore fit and flare
150-30 in. jeans, size 8 dress with top taken in to about size 4 or 6
140-28/29 in. jeans (these are waist measurements btw), size 4 dress

I'm 139 now and that dress in my pic is a juniors size small. Don't ask me how.

Otherwise, it honestly it depends on the cut. My top runs at a size 2 or 4 and bottom at a 6.

    200 - 12/14 L/XL 36 DDD
    180-190 - 10 L 34 DD
    170 - 8 L 34 DD
    160 -7/8 M/L 34 D
    150 - 6/7 M 34 C/D
    140 - 5 S/M 34 C

I mainly gain weight in my boobs. I think my ideal weight is around 170 which I guess still gives me a highish bmi but I look and feel best around that weight. I am also very active and in pretty good shape. have a lot of definition and not a lot of fat or cellulite.

    170 - size 12/14
160 - size 10/12 (I'm @161 now and back to happy in my Old Navy Flirt jeans. They are soft and stretchy though and as a weird shape (apple with pear hips), I always have a muffin top even when jeans are falling off everywhere else, so I think that's why I tend to a smaller size.
    140-160 - solid size 10
    <140 - size 8

    well, I am also 5'2''
here are how my sizes have worked so far during my weight loss
    220-230 lbs = 24 pants and 2x or 3x tops
    200-180 lbs = 18 pants XL tops
    180-160 = 14 pants L tops
145lbs is my current weight and I am wearing size 10 jeans and M or sometimes even S tops

back in my skinner days like when I was in high school I wore like a size 1 to a size 3 when I was about 100 to 110 lbs and a size 5 at about120 lbs to 125 lbs
and about a size 8 when I was at 130 to 135 lbs
everyone is different though so its hard to judge how ings will fit from other peoples experience. anyways, good luck making it your goals.: ]

US vanity sizing makes me nuts. I have a pair of my old jeans from high school that are a size 11, and I was 145 pounds at the time. I can hold them up to today's size 6 and they're the same size. At my highest, 5'4" and 282 I was in a tight size 24 in low end brand jeans, and 22-24 tops. (which probably means a 30 in a designer size, not that they go that high)

Now at 222 I'm in a baggy pair of 18s, same brand as the now discarded 24s. Don't know on tops, holding off on buying new clothes until I hit onederland.

    5'4" tall
    Started at 200lbs
    wore size 18 jeans (tight)
XXL shirts (Mostly men's because I have huge upper arms)
    I'm now 140lbs
    Size 8 jeans
Large shirts now but no more men's sizes! Yay...
I am built different than most women: I am much smaller on the bottom than the top! I always lose weight in on bottom half - long before I lose on top.
