    Salt (sodium, to be precise) is necessary for basic cell functions. It's true that most people get too much of it and that can cause lots of other problems, but you can't live completely without it either.

    Spices aren't going to ruin your weight loss, they will help you. If all your food is gross/bad/boring, you probably aren't going to stick with it. Also, there are many other great sources of protein besides chicken: lean fish, lean red meat, other seafood, tofu and soy products, beans etc. Chicken is great (with seasoning) but doesn't need to be the center of every meal of your life. That gets boring really quick.

    Indeed besides the fact we love spices and all the different tastes you can make with them, there is the health benefit of them.
    And some herbs have even a salty taste/flavor like Lavas. Very yummie and used in soups and rice dishes.

    my wife suggest me to avoid sugar and salt completely for atlest 2 weeks plus no carbs and other junk foods. so i'm having boil vegetables,eggs,beans and chicken but without spices.
    Yikes! No sugar rules out most fruits and vegetables, and I'm not sure where you're finding salt-free chicken breasts (the best from my grocers have 50-75mg of sodium per serving). I couldn't begin to guess how eliminating pepper help you. It's not sustainable--a yo-yo waiting to happen.

    How about countering with following the USDA recommendation of 2400mg of sodium per day? This in itself can be tricky! I missed and hit 2535mg yesterday, which I'm okay with.

    The AHA recommendation on added sugars is no more than 9 tsp per day.

    We eat no added sugar, which means i eat as much fruit as i want :) But like yogurt and oats, coffee etc i dont use sugar in it. So big difference there. BTW same for salt. We dont add salt to our food. But like Cod which we eat regular is a high salt fish, but we love it and eat it. I just dont spice it with extra salt. But make a nice lemon/mustard cod dish. Some spices and herbs on it too. Yummie very tasty

    Oh, no! I'd be so sad if I had to eat boiled chicken and vegetables with NO flavor! It sounds like your wife has the very best intentions for you. It does seem, however, that the "plain/bland/boiled" diet myth and "carbs are evil" belief crosses all cultures.

    Cut back on sweets and junk and too many extra servings of rice and such? Sure, that's a good plan. But completely denying yourself everything is not necessary. Just eat smaller amounts of the rich foods and desserts.

    I learned today about how Cod is really...in trouble to say the least. :(

    Your wife has good suggestions for no foods with ADDED sugar/salt, that is much healthier, ie cutting out processed foods (check the labels). But no spices?? many are beneficial and help the metabolism, as well as make the food palatable.

    Being a former chef i can tell you that cooking without salt or sugar doesn't have to be bland or boring at all. Use your imagination and be adventurous. There is a lot to win with using spices and herbs

    Also i dont see my eating healthy as a diet. Its a life style and i can eat everything i want. Only in my calorie allowance.
    My sugar level and blood pressure was ( yes i say WAS :) ) to high so that is why i dont add it to my food anymore. Together with my healthy food choices and my deficit it made me lose 54 pounds.
    But it sure dont mean that i wont have pizza or like New years a couple of glasses champagne.
    Only moderation is the big secret in your healthy ( weight loss) life style.

    When you are on a diet and you go back in some months or year to your "normal" eating, you will gain weight again.

    Start logging your food, weigh everything and get used to being aware how much you eat and nutrition you get :)

    i have no hunger, cravings or binging at all. Except for one day...and i wondered... Later in the evening i thought about it and the change that day was that i was out of yogurt..so less protein that day.
    Next day hoppa to the shop and solved it.

    That is why i say..log and learn your nutrition intake. Listen to your body. I discovered this way that when my protein intake is to low i will be hungry.

    I try to eat as much as possible fiber and proteins. And it goes good for months, no hunger at all
    Our food is spices,herbs,fruit,veggies,meat,fish,nuts, dried fruits like prunes, raisins and figs etc, some grain and diary.

    Every evening i have my popcorn baggie ( 100 calories) as a snack. And i have some almonds.

    So i eat it all.
    Only make my choices wisely what to eat, so i am not hungry :)

    That would be much better! I could see a reasonable diet being constructed that way. Restaurants and packaged foods often add large quantities of added sugars and I'd love for that to be noted on the nutrional labels and/or menus so consumers can make informed choices. On the other hand, a couple days ago I cooked 16oz of brussel sprouts with 1 tbsp of maple syrup (because that vegetable is unpalatable to me without added sweeteners). I'd point out the final dish contained far less sugar than you'd find in a banana or even an orange! Like the AHA says, I believe moderate amounts of added sugar can fit into a reasonable diet, and nutritionists advise some caution with high-sugar fruits. Congratulations, by the way, on your weight loss! :)

    And i agree, i would eat waffles with honey if i want too.

    In my eyes there is no bad food. Just food that dont contribute much nutrition in your daily menu and consume all your calories...mostly the yummie junk food ( that i like too). But lucky me i love my veggies and fruit and nuts too. So i rather eat those and dont get hungry. and sure when we go out i eat that slice of pizza...which means i try to fit it in my calorie allowance. So eat the rest of the day according to that. And dont bulk 4 pieces of pizza.
    Moderation does the trick for me.

    I see food as fuel that keeps the motor running. Not for comforting me.
    Of course a dinner out is fun but that is socializing etc.

    And if you make the right choices you wont be hungry and you eat healthy. The junk food ( bad food...like i said according to me it doesn't exist) is fun and a nice treat.

    I recall the month we drastically cut our salt and fat intake and boy was that a wake-up call! It turns out all we were tasting in our favourite foods was the fat and salt. Without salt to make up for tasteless food, I found myself gravitating to fresher and stronger flavoured vegetables. This was when I fell in love with parsnip in my soups.

    Spices are wonderful, too.

    Do you do your own cooking in the household? Why all the boiling?

    After that month was over by the way, we celebrated by ordering KFC chicken. That month had changed our tastes, though. That chicken was horrible!

    I fried our own chicken last night, a schnitzel, flavoured with Mrs. Dash, smoked paprika and coriander.

    Well, my wife's plan seems to be working quite well so far, since I've lost 7kgs within 10 days! This is a very structured meal plan made by a doctor specialising in weight loss. How is works is that for reducing carbs and sugars, the body goes into ketosis, which is fat burning mode. Once you have reached ketosis, you can keep to low carbs for faster weight reduction or eat carbs/sugars in moderation, so slower weight loss. My wife has lost 40 pounds using this diet herself.

    Although it's difficult right now, I've been told this makes sugar/carb cravings go away, which is great! Its hard right now, and emotionally tough.

How is works is that for reducing carbs and sugars, the body goes into ketosis, which is fat burning mode. Once you have reached ketosis, you can keep to low carbs for faster weight reduction or eat carbs/sugars in moderation, so slower weight loss. My wife has lost 40 pounds using this diet herself.

    Although it's difficult right now, I've been told this makes sugar/carb cravings go away, which is great! Its hard right now, and emotionally tough.

    And as soon as you start to eat normally again there's a huge chance you'll put it all back on

    7kg in 10 days is a lot of water weight and will slow down

    I'm sure there's a keto group on here that will support you if that's the way you want to go ...wouldn't work for me
  • Try more grilled food with big servings of dressing free salad. Stir fry on really high heat needs very little oil. I had chicken stir fry, chicken kebab and boneless chicken breast for this weeks menu.

    i guess best approach is to live a balance life i-e, control diet, exercise and running, proper sleep, sex and happy life with family and friends combine make health better.. staying away from one due to any reason is not appropriate for life.

    What is a 'diet food'? Your diet is what you consume; whether that be peanut butter, eggs, cheese, burgers or broccoli.

    You don't need to eat specific foods to lose weight, eat what you want, just be in a caloric deficit and you'll lose weight.

    I agree, you won't last if you make yourself eat foods you hate. It's about balance.

    do you intend on eating this way forever? what happens when you start eating normal foods again? of course you're going to drop weight fast you're cutting out entire food groups. good for your wife for loosing 40lbs that's amazing and good for you as well but again what happens when you go back to normal food? it's all about balance. find balance in your eating and you'll eventually loose the weight and more importantly hopefully KEEP IT OFF. good luck to you and your wife. :)

    19lb in 45 days? H'ok then

    Good luck with starting to eat normally ...be aware you are going to have about 4-5kg natural weight increase when your glycogen stores and water replenishes

    how to make stamina with weight loss ! any idea

    Speed isn't wonderful ...it means water weight and more LBM loss than you needed to lose which makes maintenance harder.

    Feeling weak means you haven't been adequately fuelling your body for your activity rate and you need to do that to develop stamina ...did you ever try calorie counting or did you stick to your restrictive foods ...if the latter how are you planning to move to a maintenance level

    I'm sorry but I still think you have a huge learning curve to work out what you can eat and in what portions
