Why would you eat diet foods?

Eat regular foods, cooked well to a calorie defecit

Give me an example of what kind of food you like? Or what kind of food you imagine is a diet food?

What is a 'diet food'? Your diet is what you consume; whether that be peanut butter, eggs, cheese, burgers or broccoli.

You don't need to eat specific foods to lose weight, eat what you want, just be in a caloric deficit and you'll lose weight.

I wouldn't resign myself to a life of food that doesn't taste good. That would get old really fast. Eat what you like, just eat less of it.

This sounds like a diet. You should not have to deprive yourself from foods that you like.

Why can't you use spices? They only add 15 calories or so to meals.

No thanks. I'll just live with my small deficit.

i'm sorry but have to say that your wife just gave you a recipe for disaster :s , i would suggest to go to pinterest, google, skinnymom.com and countless of blogs and site where you are gonna find awesome food that taste goodddd and will fit your calorie intake! hit the search bottom here on MFP and you are also gonna find many many post of people that will give you ideas of what to eat and great menu.

and the no spice thing, please just don't go there, you can use black pepper, curry, bit of salt, paprika, whatever you like and it's not gonna affect your weight-loss

if you start this journey feeling sad, deprive it, commonly it doesn't ends well.

    good luck! :)

Sounds awful and unnecessary unless you have some health condition you haven't mentioned.

I usually roast or pan fry veggies in a spray of olive or coconut oil, with a bit of salt and pepper. Other spices and herbs are also great, even if you have some real reason to avoid salt (losing weight is not such a reason). Chicken and beans are both tasty when properly prepared, but use spices and herbs. Also there's no reason to be so restrictive and cut out carbs and other meats besides chicken--just count calories and reduce your portion sizes if needed (filling up on extra veggies).

I'm guessing by "diet food" you mean foods traditionally considered healthy. For example fruits, vegetables, white meat, whole wheat carbs. First you are going to need to add something to help the taste with all of those except fruit. I recommend olive oil. Next I understand your wife's idea, "healthy food" can allow you to injest a lot of grams without a lot of calories. 1 cup of diced green beans is like 34 cals, but it's a lot of green beans. It makes it easier to feel full on technically less food. That's the only real benefit of "health food" imo

Yeah... don't listen to your wife for this sort of stuff. Or in general, not sure.

Doesn't matter what you eat, carbs, beans, or sugar , or salt, as long as your in a deficit you'll lose weight. So eat what you're used to, branch out a bit!

Maintained a caloric deficit and exercised.

    That sounds terrible. :(

Personally I lost my 45 lbs by eating all kinds of food in moderation. I did try to increase my vegetable intake for health, but I did it by roasting them, adding them to stews and soups, etc. Mostly I just reduced portion sizes of the foods that I enjoy.

Whatever your plan is, it needs to be something you can do long-term. If it makes you miserable you won't want to stick with it.

    OMG no no no

Spices are your friend, salt and sugar in moderation are fine too...carbs are not junk foods

Maybe you need to learn for yourself?

    Weigh and log

    Calorie defecit

That isn't necessary. All you need to do is reduce the amount that you eat. Go over to Getting Started and read the thread "A guide to get you started on your path to Sexypants". It will show you what you need to do.

Use spices! If by "diet food" you just mean healthy food...for example if I cook a plain chicken breast it's practically disgusting.
I don't know why the "practically disgusting" made me lol, but that is SO true LOL!! I use a ton of spice on everything, play around with different ones to see what you like

OP you're from Karachi, right? Typical Pakistani food is very healthy! No need to cut out salt and sugar and spices, or to boil everything. Blech. Just eat what you always eat. Weigh and measure your portions, calculate the calories, and eat less than you've been eating.

I agree with the people here. If your food has no taste your doomed. Grilled fish, baked french fries, anything as long as it is good for you.

I'm a big fan of low carb, low/no sugar eating, and even I had to do a double-take on this.

Even if you go the no-carb route (which is quite a leap for someone not already experienced with low-carb), you don't want to also restrict sodium, or you'll end up deficient, due to the processes that go on when one drops carbs. Even so, though, even the dogmatic "don't even eat organs because they have too many carbs" groups will allow at least some spices. And you really can't also restrict fats, which is what appears to be happening, as well.

Your wife seems to be conflating...well...just about every way of eating that isn't just calorie restriction. As a result, you end up living off boiled chicken breast and egg whites.

If you want to use a way of eating that isn't just calorie reduction for whatever reason, I recommend checking out a proper low-carb (high fat) eating framework. It works well for people who aren't able to get a lot of physical activity in or have other barriers to successful/sustainable weight loss. Check out the Low Carber Daily group if you're interested and need a place to start (the mod team has been working on building a resource library, so there is and will be a bunch of information for beginners).

If you don't like the idea of restricting types of foods, then try simple calorie reduction for a while and see how it works for you. A lot of people do well with what MFP gives them and you never know if you're one of them unless you try it for at least a couple of weeks, ideally a month. If it isn't working for you (not just weight loss or lack thereof, but also for mental wellbeing and your ability to sustain it), then research ways to tweak things or try a different approach. You have to burn more than you consume to lose weight, but counting calories (and only calories) isn't the only way to achieve that goal.

I'd be lost in life without my seasoning and spices.

Use them on everything, always. They cost basically nothing (well on a calorie scale) :)

Those 60-200 calorie / 31 g sauces add up fast... and they are mostly slop to cover up the taste of good food anyways.

If you are worried about adding calories, you can get lots of great flavor with lime juice, lemon juice, herbs and spices. Seriously, a squeeze of lemon juice on steamed broccoli makes it a lot more exciting. As someone said above, salt and sugar are fine for you in moderation and yummy fats are an important part of your diet.

We eat our food without added salt and sugar. But certainly not without spices and herbs
We use a lot of them Specially on our meat we use lot of black pepper/curry powder/garlic powder/onion powder, all sorts.
Also adding herbs to dishes is great and very tasty. Parsley, Cilantro, Thym, Rosemaryn, Ginger, Celery seeds etc.

We love it and use a lot. I do log them because we use them so much sometimes they add up to 50 calories a day. But sure dont want to miss them.

I cut sugar and salt out for health reasons. But when you dont have any medical reason to cut them out you dont have to.
Just weigh your food and count the calories. Losing weight is all about Calories in vs Calories out.

Err, don't eat diet foods then? You only need to achieve a deficit, not to eat "diet foods". The quality food I ate for supper yesterday was a 5 Guys Little Cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, green peppers. This morning it was Chobani greek yogurt with mix-ins, a freshly-baked English muffin with butter/olive-oil spread, and soon a coffee! :)

There isn't any need to suffer or torture yourself in order to lose weight. If you are tracking in MFP, fill your calories breakdown with any food you wish.

Yikes! No sugar rules out most fruits and vegetables, and I'm not sure where you're finding salt-free chicken breasts (the best from my grocers have 50-75mg of sodium per serving). I couldn't begin to guess how eliminating pepper helps you. It's not sustainable--a yo-yo waiting to happen.

How about countering with following the USDA recommendation of 2400mg of sodium per day? This in itself can be tricky! I missed and hit 2535mg yesterday, which I'm okay with.

The AHA recommends no more than 9tsp of added sugars per day.

And eat as many of the other spices as you like!

(Alternatively, simply eat at a calorie deficit to lose weight more enjoyably like most here.)
