I've always been put off fishy fishes so have resorted to cod or pollock. But I want to start eating tuna atleaast, (tinned one) how can I make it taste better?
I was thinking maybe adding it on a jacket patatoe? But in terms of seasoning the fish itself..

If you want to keep it simple and eat it as a a snack: Mix it with 1/4-1/2 cup of a flavourful pasta sauce.

When in doubt, wrap it in bacon!

I add just a dab of mayo, Mrs. Dash seasoning, and a drop of lemon juice (lessens the fishiness)! Or put it in a wrap with lettuce and tomato. You could even eat it with black beans or vegetables. Mmmm

I like to turn it into a sauce -- for pasta or chicken or whatever. To find recipes, just google "tonnato sauce recipe" and you'll find a bunch of them. Although most of them call for tuna in oil, tuna in water works well, too. A quick dish is "fagioli con tonno" -- basically a can of tuna (drained), a can of beans (white, red, chickpeas, whatever, drained), some chopped veggies like celery or carrots, and some vinaigrette/Italian dressing.

One brand of tuna that I find to not be overly fishy is Chicken of the Sea Chunk Light in Water. And the other folks here have some great tips for flavoring it!

I think tuna casserole is yummy and if you put a lot of other stuff in it the flavor gets fairly mild. Today i made what i call tuna noodle stovetop slop. Its just tuna, noodles, cream of mushroom soup, carrots, and peas. You could easily make something like that and use a little tuna and more veggies.

I also like putting tuna in pasta salad along with mayo or sour cream, hard boiled eggs, cucumber, tomatoes, black olives, onions and whatever else i have on hand. The more you add to it the more you can cover the flavor.

Personally i like tuna so i usually double it up.

Do you have access to the flavoured tunas out there? There is one by Sealord that I eat a lot; sundried tomatoes and olives. I imagine you could toss some sliced sundried tomatoes and olives with a tablespoonful of marinara sauce to make it yourself--great thrown over cabbage shreds or lettuce with cucumber and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar!

Lemon, lime, cilantro ...anything strong will work.

Also if you don't like something don't eat it lol!!! that's just silly spend the money on something you like not something you dislike
  • I make tuna salad with a small amount of mayo, garlic and onion salt, and celery seed. the onion takes away the fishy taste :)

I always mix in avocado, lime juice, some cayenne pepper, the white of a hardboiled egg and finely chopped celery. You can add hot sauce to it to spice it up, some of the lime zest, some plain Greek yogurt and wrap in a lettuce leaf for a tasty (and healthy) protein packed lunch option.
  • take it to dinner. OO I had to :)

Big dollop of 0% Fat Greek Yoghurt mixed with a tsp tip of English Mustard (Not Dijon). Mix in with the tuna (canned) and it tastes like Tuna Mayo but with a fraction of the calories. Another thing I do is I mix it with a little (45g) of Philadelphia "Lightest" melted in a Tbsp of skimmed milk. Add this gently to the canned tuna with some finely chopped onion which can then be put in a Baked Potato or just on some salad :)

In addition to some of the ideas above, you could also make a curry. Chop up an onion, sauté it in vegetable oil with some minced garlic and ginger root until soft, add the tuna and some curry powder to taste, possibly a bit of Cayenne pepper too (or a sliced chili pepper), and then serve over your jacket potato or with rice. I make a version of this dish fairly often.

Toast a Slimwich sandwich bun. Mix mayo, tomato basil pesto, and hot, hot sauce and spread on toast. Dice some pickled jalapeno to like pickle relish consistency, add chopped onion and spread on mayo. Top each toast with half of a drained 4 ounce can of tuna in oil. Makes two open face, flavor packed, filling, and satisfying sandwiches for less than 375 calories :) Of course, bacon works, too

Just enough mayo to make this spreadable, 2 large eggs (or egg whites), one 8-inch stalk of finely chopped celery, salt, pepper, garlic powder (to suit). This is tuna salad at it's finest...and it is good right away but better after a couple of hours to allow for the seasonings to blend in.

The mayo is the high-calorie item...I have not found a reasonable substitute for it yet.
Low fat mayo tastes icky to me.
Plain or Greek Yogurt is NOT A SUBSTITUTE!

Sooo...when it comes to tuna salad, my motto is: Suck it up and count the calories...or sacrifice the flavor and enjoyment.
  • I drown it in vinegar and eat straight from the can.
