I can see where vibration might increase calories burned because you have to fight against the vibration, but I doubt it is enough to provide significant results.

Lol. Fighting against vibration. The things you come up with.

    Never fight against vibration. :D

Do people still use those? I thought they were well know bunk in like the 50s

ETA: I don't even understand the "logic" behind it ?? Is it supposed to shake off your fat?

"But I'm not losing any weight, in fact gained some."

By your own words it sounds like it doesn't work.

Heck yeah they are still used! But not the ones you are thinking of lol.
Funny story, "vibrating machines" were invented for medical purposes. Doctors used them to help calm women's *ahem* hysterical conditions.

    Best invention ever lol.

Why on earth should it be fought against? Lol

I think most people are picturing this:

but OP is likely talking about this:

    zenergy-collage.jpg

Both are useless for weight loss.

I thought this thread was going to be about the person who logged self-pleasuring as exercise.

    I've seen stranger log entries!

They're called "vibration platforms" or "vibration plates". They're often founds in stupid people's basements or in gyms that want their cardio space filled with some machines that stay empty so they can always claim there's no wait.

They're called "vibration platforms" or "vibration plates". They're often founds in stupid people's basements or in gyms that fill space with $500 useless machines rather than $2-3000 useful machines to up their cardio machine count.

Yeah, they claim to burn outrages amounts of calories, well over 1K per hour in some claims, but a quick calulation of VO2 Max requirements for a person to burn what they claim shows that you would have to have an endurance better than the top cross country skiers in the world to obtain them. Harldly what someone in their target market is going to have.

    http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/05/090508045323.htm
Couldn't find the study, but... In 2009 Vissers found that dieting women who used the power plate for six months lost significantly more body weight (11% of original weight), especially visceral fat, than than dieting women on a different exercise program (7%). Very little of the body weight (.5%) or visceral fat (about .1cm) had been gained back six months after the intervention ended. Each exercise session was 12 minutes for the first three months, and 14 minutes for the second three months.

Exercising on the plate causes more muscle contractions due to fluctuations in how much force is needed for exercises like squats, calf lifts, and pushups. I'm not sure how much stability and balance would be involved as well (these machines appear to have rails).

So...the evidence says they are effective, but I don't know if it is worth it (unless there is one already at your gym).
