What is wrong with trying to lose weight before you're 18? If anything that would save this country countless obese kids. I totally agree with this. Too many kids are fat. Too many kids are inactive. Too many kids are babied by their parents. They are given everything because parents can but what they really need is what our parents did for us back in the 60's and 70's; kicked out side and told to play OR put into sports so they are active. We had summer sports, fall sports winter sports and spring sports. We were not fat and those that were, they were the minority; now a days they are becoming the majority.
My wife and myself were not raised over weight and we made sure our daughter wasn't either. She never wanted for anything but she was also made to be active. We as parents are still active as a good "foundation" was created when we were younger; we hope we created that same "foundation" for her. We lead by example; this is lacking in others and why little fatties are running around every where. That may seem cold and it is because that is a reality. Reality isn't all rainbows and gum drops!0 -

I don't look at the forums an awful lot. I just can't handle it. I'll get too caught up in the crap (like you seemingly have, not to judge or anything. just observing) and got off my nut at someone somewhere. haha.
People were giving advice to a school aged girl who lied about being 18 on here, telling her to do this that and the other. I was like "uh. you're still growing" I even blogged about it, it pee'd me off that much that society is making kids think they're fat when they're barely hitting puberty! (that's my rant over)
I myself have a meal replacement shake for breakfast and sometimes lunch, people don't like them here, they "teach you nothing" - I see it more as starting from scratch. It's like punishment. It's not easy to want to snack between meals because you've only had a shake and then try and find the healthy snack option, believe me!
It's a hard task this thing that some of us are doing. With over 100lbs still left to lose with the measly 23lbs out the way. I am looking at a looong drawn out process. I don't think I'll reach my deadline, but hey. I'm losing. I'm here. I am TRYING to teach myself and my 22 month old son better habits (I feed him healthier than i do myself, go figure). I work out. Or try to. at least 3 days a week.
To each their own. My easiest way is to pop on here and make like minded friends and just stay away from the crap. Unless I see something that might amuse or appeal to me on the new topics list on my wall page. Your post appealed and made me shake my head because I agree.

Education is what most people lack. And not to be abrasive, but the original poster seems to be against spreading knowledge etc. I agree not every single post is a gem on these forums but I have found some great information. Also, if someone is in a plateau and they are eating a crap diet, I will tell them about it and honestly I've never had anyone tell me that my advice is not welcome; in fact, they were looking for additional pointers to help them out.
In fact, if I knew as much as I do know about nutrition as a 17 year old (or younger) I would not starve myself on and off for those teenage years. Now, I know you can get similar results with much less desperate measures...but that's just me.
The reason I lecture with work is because I teach, so to assume I do not want knowledge spread would be inaccurate. Spread knowledge not opinion. Not judgement...Spread Fact not ridicule...Spread help not hurt....That is the whole point. Spread KNOWLEDGE not I'm right and your wrong....
and example. I have read primal, Atkins, BFC, Low Carb, Low sugar, bodybuilders diet, eat clean by Tosca, Lean belly prescription, Why weight around, and these are just the ones I remember of the top of my head...I am a researcher....None not one of these programs says the other one doesn't work...Not one of these programs claims that nothing else will work.. Not one low carb program claims never eat veggies or fruit.....
Yes we jump to conclusions without knowledge....That is the point......Can you loose weight in any or all of these ways? ABSOLUTELY! Will you gain weight if you go back to old eating habits NO MATTER HOW YOU LOOSE THE WEIGHT??? OF COURSE YOU WILL!

It is true this is a public forum....PUBLIC! I think you are absolutely right on all but one point. Losing weight is most certainly nowhere near the hardest thing I have to do! Sure it takes hard physical work, but there are many many thing in life that are a lot harder. Anyone can lose weight and get healthy.
It could be not the hardest thing you will have to do, it is true..I know for me, I do a lot of hard things, *grin* the loosing itself is not hard, the changing my complete life emotionally and physically is where it is the hardest. The gaining my own worth is the hard part...*grin*0 -

I just moved over here from fat secret for that very reason...Ive been doin the hCG protocol and find that ppl are very judgemental of this diet to the point where i had to hide my profile so ppl would quit leaving me comments about how bad this diet is and i should try doing this or that as it is a much healthier option.
I completly agree with the not giving advise where none is asked although helpful insights and learned experiences are always a plus! I wish everyone success as long as you are healthy and honestly feel comfortable with what your doing...and if not, pick yourself up and try something else. Good luck :flowerforyou:0 -
This is so timely because I just posted something and got some judgement back about my diary so I closed it . Most people are supportive but others make you feel really bad about being frustrated or even slipping up once. Thanks for saying this.
Actually, you posted with the heading that "honesty is the best policy", then went on to say how you're on the verge of quitting because nothing is working for you. Some people interpreted that as an indication that you wanted help - and so that's what you got. Its not judgement designed to make you feel bad.
Same for anyone else, if you want feed back - ask for it. If you want someone to say they've been through this too - then ask for that. But don't get mad when you ask why isn't this working and people share their opinions.
If you don't want input from other MFP members, then Don't post a question.

Yes I am serious. You hit the nail on the head; kids have too many distractions. Kids need to be monitored by parents. Parents need to take responsibility for what their kids do. Parents are letting TV, computers, gaming, etc. parent their kids; not them. Little Johny gets anything he wants and little Johny unless parented correctly is going to be unfit, possibly fat and has the potential of being a lazy adult with no foundation of good parenting to pass on to his own kids and each generation gets lazier and lazier, fatter and fatter ... that is the facts, that is what is happening now; today.
Kids need to be encourage to do physical activity and in a lot of cases FORCED. I don't care if Johny doesn't want to do it he is going to do it! He is going to have limited/monitored time with other distractions such as gaming and TV, etc. He's going to get home cooked meals and the times he gets to go to McDonalds he sure the heck isn't getting anything SUPERSIZED!
Easier said then done? That is a cop-out. Nobody has to be perfect they just have to make the effort. It is because of the lack of effort of parents these days that too many kids are problems; problems with society, problems in school, problems with health and well being, etc. The buck stops here with us the parent. We are to provide them the skills to make proper decisions in all walks of life so that they have this foundation to pass on to their children; without us doing this then each generation receives less information ... that is where we are today.
Children are running the roosts. Parent are a scare to discipline their children. Too many parents want to be friends with their children. Too many parents feel buying their children expensive gifts is buying their affection. Sometimes Johny needs a kick in the *kitten*. Johny doesn't need to have as many material things as his friends do. The parents don't have to live like the Jones's and give them everything they want. Johny doesn't need to come home from school and have a snack. Johny doesn't need to have an snack at night either. If Johny doesn't want to eat supper then tough he can go without. Over weight children, problem children ... they are nothing more then a manifestation of their up bringing. That falls on the parent. They don't have to be perfect by any means but they have to make a solid try at it. There are no excuses!0 -
I agree with the general theme of this thread, but it also reminds me of my biggest complaint with this entire website. Namely, the fact that while MFP is a great tool for tracking daily food intake, water, and exercise, it is seemingly worthless when it comes to providing its members with a reliable, scientifically proven roadmap for its members to follow. As a result, most members flock to the message boards looking for answers and instead get conflicting messages from different members, who, as you pointed out, have zero to little idea of what the hell they're talking about, nor any sources to back up their claims. So, people tend to cling to answers resembling the ones they want (look at any of the threads regarding eating back exercise calories as an example) and tune out ones that contradict that.0

All I can say to you is THIS IS ONE AWESOME POST! I could not have said it better myself and you actually had the courage to post a thread that I have wanted to for some time! I tend to stay away from the message boards because of the "negative nancies'" "bullies," "KNOW IT ALLS'" and so on. It seems there is more negativity than positivity and this is not what this site is about! One sad thing, though, your post will probably not effect those people because "those" people do not see themselves that way!

Yes this a weight lose forum - but you are meant to SUPPORT each other, not make matters worse.
I too fall of the tracks sometimes but if I took everything people say to heart, I would be back where I started with some added for good measure.
You are losing weight for YOU, YOU are your best judge of whether you are doing it right or not (and lets face it, we all know when we stuff up), who is the one that is getting healthier as you lose weight YOU - so support people, support0 -

I read a post of a girl who believed she failed over eating a muffin..A FREAKING MUFFIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.and someone responded with your calories are too low...you need healthy calories....WTH!!!!!! how about honey we all go a little insane while trying to loose weight....
Be informative, not judgmental...Be kind not rude....Give advice when asked...these are not hard concepts....DON'T JUDGE is not a hard thing to grasp.....
I understand your point and find a lot of misguided advise in the posts sometimes. but i believe the majority of people think they are offering help.
and as far as the thread you mentioned... that was one tiny little post out of over 30 who were very supportive and did not make the OP feel as though she was doing something wrong. we have to take everything with a grain of salt (and then drink a bunch of water to flush it out :laugh: :drinker: ) and be able to weed out the ones who are unfounded. surround ourselves with friends with similar views and similar paths and ignore those who will not benefit our journeys!

It's a public forum and there will be some very helpful posts and some off-the-wall posts. I'm not sure why people take the opinions of strangers on the internet so seriously in the first place, but you can always move on from the ones that you don't find hepful or report them if they are truly abusive.
Agreed. I've truly never had my feelings hurt or put much thought into what some stranger in the interweb had to say.
Also, as far as people being experts when struggling with weight issues themselves - there are some people on MFP who aren't struggling at all. Some have lost their weight and kept it off for years. Some are trained in nutrition and fitness. Some have never been overweight and are maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We can't assume everyone on here is here for the same reasons.0 -

If this comment was directed to me, I've been misunderstood. Kjarlune's original post, her "vent" was terrific, and I'm in full support. Her point was bang on and correct. It's the negative comments, and petty responses to her post that I was referring to as being "trampling puppies" I thought I was rather clear about that. I enjoyed her post. Tho' it seemed to have fallen on deaf ears judging by many of the retaliatory responses. If your quoted post was not directed to me than my mistake. Although the very fact that you felt the need to write what you did speaks volumes regardless of whom it was directed. A vast majority of people on here can't seem to refrain from being for lack of a better word, "*****y" to one another.0 -
My two pet peeves on the forums: people getting bent out of shape over "starvation mode" happening the minute you eat too few calories, and the big one (drum roll please)...

Namely, the fact that while MFP is a great tool for tracking daily food intake, water, and exercise, it is seemingly worthless when it comes to providing its members with a reliable, scientifically proven roadmap for its members to follow. As a result, most members flock to the message boards looking for answers and instead get conflicting messages from different members, who, as you pointed out, have zero to little idea of what the hell they're talking about, nor any sources to back up their claims. So, people tend to cling to answers resembling the ones they want (look at any of the threads regarding eating back exercise calories as an example) and tune out ones that contradict that.
I'm new here myself so have not seen these types of posts Kjarlune made the initial rant thread about. I'll admit many people do think themselves experts but unless you have some degree then every thing is just your opinion and people should take it as such. And people should understand what works for one person may not work for another. I however don't feel it is necessary if somebody bashes or bullies another person(s); that is just wrong. This is a forum so everybody can have their say however people can be decent about it, have their say hopefully in a constructive way and then leave it as such.
We are all accountable for ourselves. Only we can make the difference. It will be hard work and will be trying at times. It will be a life long struggle. These are the only true facts.
