Made it through day 1 (ash wednesday fast day) no biggie and now the afternoon of day 2 I am getting a bad headache. I usually have my daily diet coke and snack (usually sweets) about now.

Any advice or just general advice for a carb/sweets/starchy-loving guy?

Hey op! What are you specifically cutting out? If we know that, we might be able to make recommendations.

Sorry, why are you giving it up?

Giving up anything unless medically related is pretty faddy.

So you're cutting out all white food from your diet? Weird. Just eat at a deficit.

Salt. Eat more salt or drink bone broth or bouillon to compensate for the diuretic effect of not eating carbs.

Well my weaknesses that contribute to excess calories are sweets (candy, ice cream, pastries, etc), bready foods, snacks, sugar cereal, and bad food choices at restaurants. I am a picky eater and tend to choose burger or sandwich + fries.

It looks like she is doing it for lent which I wouldn't call faddy at all.

....and cutting out the white food will help immensely reach a deficit.

If you are still getting the same caffeine...then I would guess an imbalance with your salt, dehydration, or a combination.

Truthfully though, anytime you dramatically change your diet like you have there is bound to be some biological blowback...and it could be for no good reason that you can diagnose.

Sorry, didn't see where he said lent... and then saw about Ash Wednesday.

    ....backing out now.

    LOL

    just eat less FOOD...

calorie deficit is all you need...

not some "no white food restrictions plan"

I have only had one coke zero the last two days as opposed to my usual 2-4 per day + a starbucks Carmel Mach.

Racist diets for religious reasons makes them no longer racist.

Are you cutting out soda too OP? If you are I would say that lack of caffeine is probably why you are getting the headache. There isn't much you can do about that except drink plenty of water and maybe find another caffeine source, like unsweetened tea.

Cold packs on the head and neck help with headaches.. otherwise you'll probably just have to tough it out.

What happens when you over eat on dark foods????
  • It is the aspartame in the Diet Coke. It happens to me every time. You think I would learn but I don't. Give it a day or two and the headache will go away.

try having some coffee...coffee often helps my headaches. If you've cut the diet coke, the coffee will replace that caffeine.

No. Not in the slightest. This comment is dumb, however.

If you're still feeling off, try adding some legumes to your next meal.

    And ignore all the trolling.
  • It is not the caffeine. You could drink double the amount and it will not have an affect. If you drank something else with the Aspartame it would help otherwise wait it out.

Yes, you're right, cutting out all "whites" will result in a calorie deficit, as you have countlessly told responders who question it. But I think they're just trying to tell you that you don't need to make yourself completely miserable in order to be successful. You don't learn anything by going to extremes & cutting entire food groups out. It's not going to be easy, it's going to take some effort, and part of the process is learning how to control and moderate things that might trigger you.

OP: when I did a two week elimination of all refined carbs I got a few headaches (go figure). Beans helped a lot.
There's nothing wrong with reducing your intake of high calorie, low nutrient refined carbs. just replace them with nutrient dense foods. And be sure to eat enough.

    And again, have some beans.

I gave up diet coke along with going back to a more PALEO modified diet for lent. And yes I ate a ton of pasta and bread Tuesday. Ha!!! I will say I use EXCEDRIN migraine when getting of the diet coke (and when I get migraines). Really helps with headache and has some caffeine in it... Just a little more than 40 days... WE CAN DO THIS.

    Made it through day 1

First off I think that it is hilarious that so many people decided that you were female even though you are a self-confessed c/s/s-loving GUY and from your profile picture you would be one butt-ugly woman.

Secondly the "no-white food regime" is a healthy and bonafide way of reducing the "bad" carbs from your diet. Cutting out white sugar, added salt, white flour other over-refined grains is a good thing. I am not sure why you have cut out the Diet Coke (although I am a Diet Pepsi man myself). It is unlikely that one can of aspartame a day will do you any harm and personally I find that it takes the edge off my sweets cravings.

Good luck on your journey and if you need a friend feel free to add me.
