Did you know that Wal-Mart is ranked as the number one employer in 20 of the 50 United States?

Why is that disgusting? Walmart is a large corporation, providing respectable income for many people. Would you rather they be sitting on their couch drawing welfare?

that includes ALL government employees, state and local.
Often the highest paid government employee is one of the service academy's football coach...

I haven't set foot in a Wal-Mart in something like 10 years. There's a reason their stuff is so cheap.0

Respectable income? They encourage their employees to register for government programs because the Waltons need to water their plants with baby seal tears and can't pay their employees enough to be self sufficient.0 -
Also disgusting that all our manufacturers have left0

Actually, their "respectable income" is so low that many of their workers do, in fact, draw welfare. Why would you support a company whose business model is to pay people so little that they have to rely on public assistance to survive?0 -
I guess it depends on where you live. Our local Walmart is clean and well-stocked with fresh produce and other foods. Target carries most of the same merchandise, just at a higher price. I have, of course, seen many different grocery stores in other areas that are dirty and unkempt. This applies to all types, not just Walmart. But for some reason Walmart always gets bashed as the low class place to shop.0

I agree. The baggers and greeters should make $20/hour.
Oh, by the way, your gallon of milk is now $14.

Yes, let's take the debate over a liveable wage to the most extreme example immediately. That's definitely the way to have a productive conversation.0 -

None of this has anything to do with them taking advantage of their employees and not paying a liveable wage.0 -

I'd hesitate to call $9.38 respectable in most markets.
US Military employs 3.2 million.
Federal government 2.6 million.
The Chinese army employs 2.3 million.
Walmart employs 2.1 million.
Let the partisan bickering and hyperbole begin. Get it on!

How about we take it to communism or some other extreme view?0 -

I agree that for the entry-level, non college educated employees, the pay is not very high, altho Target and other stores do not pay any higher for the same employees. Neither do fast food establishments.
This is why people should stay in school and get a good education, so that they can get higher paying jobs. BTW, the new CEO of Walmart just announced a $1.50 per hour raise in the starting pay for non-management employees, so this should help.
Also, I worked for American Airlines for many years, and their new-hire employees at one point, qualified for government assistance as well. Any job that does not require a college degree or a marketable skill, is not going to pay a whole lot.

It was just an example of how a demand driven market works. The market calls for cheap products, then you need cheap labor. If all of their people were paid at a level above what the market drives, then their products would be more expensive and they would lose business to competitors and eventually the company would fail. And the "other" company that is selling the parts cheaper is paying their employees at a market driven level.
Sorry. It is how things work.

They actually gained a bit of my respect when they upped their minimum wage to 9:00. That forced Target to do so as well as did TJMaxx. Hopefully it will force more companies to do so. In reality, they pay their employees better than nearly any other for low skilled type jobs.
If they would put more than 4 cashiers at the register's when I check out, I just might go there sometimes......... nahhh.0 -

By respectable, I meant it is an honest living, as opposed to drug dealing or prostitution. Which certainly pay a lot more, but carry a much higher risk of death or imprisonment. And not usually safe for 'take your kid to work day'.

They have as good a produce department as any other store in my area. I don't get all the negativity towards them. They are certainly doing more for our economy than the nay-sayers.0

I find it amusing that so many people think someones deserves to be paid more, just because. If you want to earn more money, do something to make yourself more valuable. Nobody deserves to be paid a certain amount just because they posses the skill of converting oxygen to carbon dioxide.0

I don't think they deserve more just because. I think we, as a society, a long time ago, agreed that there was a minimum fair wage that any worker should be paid per hour. That wage has not risen in accordance with other economic measurements, and it has allowed employers to intentionally stagnate wages at every level.0 -

Plus, if all the naysayers that say they wouldn't give them a dime, didn't give them a dime, Wal-Mart would not be in business. People complain and still shop there. I don't get it?0 -

People that have done nothing to improve the financial value of their time in a free market. As such...translated: "I think they should be paid more just because."

we have 3 Walmarts in my city, and all do a great business, funny how everyone of our Target stores in the country are closing and Walmart is opening 30 new stores, a big employer here and wages are very competitive, ours are paid in the 12.00/hr range, not bad0

I buy Levi jeans at Wal-Mart for $20 a pair. I went to the western store and tried on the exact same pair only they were $89 ... they were the exact same jeans. That is why I shop at Wal-Mart! Price!0
