Keto Diet Help

Options
I am in need of some help. I need to lose some serious weight and stop eating sugar because my life now hangs in the balance. I am a huge sugar addict and a picky eater. I have somewhat of an idea of where to start with this diet but any tips/advice or recipes that you found that worked would be very much appreciated. I'll take all the help I can get!! thank you!

The first couple of weeks may be really hard as you adapt but you will adapt - if you want it enough. Try not going cold turkey - give up anything with sugar in it first then cut the grains (substitute), then the starchy vegies (again substitute). Take a week to adapt to each and gradually bring your carbs down. Also learn to cook if you don't already - substitute sugar for stevia or similar if you crave. I make my own granola for example with low carb, high fibre ingredients - it feels like a luxurious way to start the day and only 4g net carb for a good sized bowl.

To get there super quick you could try fasting for a couple of days and have bulletproof coffee to start each day.

Good luck and don't forget to have some good carb or try carb cycling when you are fully adapted. I can't keep enough weight on these days but I feel alive again on only 20g of carb a day :-)

If your dr told you your life is at risk, and that you need to stop eating sugar, I am assuming diabetes? Talk to a specialist and start with a diabetics diet plan. If your health is in immediate danger, you cannot afford experimenting and there are very solid guidelines and nutritional plans your dr could give you, or a dietician could help you with. Things like fasting, avoiding carbs completely all of a sudden, carb cylcing etc could be very dangerous for you if there is a health problem.

Google "eco Atkins" you may find some tips. The challenge is to find low carb protein sources that fit your food choices, the rest is fairly standard.

    ^^All excellent suggestions.
The Low-Carber Daily group has a diverse group of low-carbers at all levels. But also a good-sized keto component. I highly recommend. Check out the "Start Here...Launch Pad" sticky. It has FAQ threads and at the bottom a slew of recipe links.

Also, here's the link for the exclusively keto group, and the other is to Reddit's r/keto. Both are also helpful communities you might want to check out as well.

Another thought. If the doc's diagnosis is diabetes related, keto will certainly help with that, as well as blood pressure, low HDL, and other issues. If you find the carb level too restrictive for you, bump those carbs up to 100g daily. That level is sufficient to regulate blood glucose and insulin response and might be a bit easier. Then, if you like, you can slowly ease it down. I think keto is the bee knees. Which is obvious since I will have been keto for a year on June 1st, but it isn't the only way to do it. Just restricting carbs as low as 100g will improve insulin resistance and diabetes, and many find it less restrictive. Do remember to drink enough water, keep your electrolyte level up in the beginning and make sure to eat enough fat. I suggest a keto calculator (r/keto has one on the sidebar) to help you figure out your macros.

I had gestational diabetes with my 4th kid. The doctor put me on a slow-carb diet like the American Diabetes Association promotes on their site. Like this: http://www.diabetes.org/food-and-fitness/food/what-can-i-eat/understanding-carbohydrates/ It kept me off insulin, and I only took blood sugar regulating meds. But the diabetes lingered after the birth. The only way I got rid of it completely was reducing my carbs further, below 100g. My A1c went from over 6 to 5.1 in 3 months. After that the GD was completely gone. If only I hadn't been an idiot and had stayed low-carb...but that's another discussion for another day.

And if it's not regarding diabetes, then you've just learned something. Useless to the OP in that case, but knowledge is knowledge.

Hope to see you in the low-carb groups, OP.

Google LCHF for beginners. Perfect way to start. I have been on this diet on and off for a year. I took some time off to do Whole30 and I am now doing 21day fix. Get ready to drop some serious weight if you follow to the T. Also I quit sugar cold turkey, I replaced it with Stevia in the raw. I felt run down and had a headache the first couple of days but it was sooo worth it. Good Luck to you :)

I wish you luck. Generally a picky eater and restricting to this extent is pretty tough.

Just eat the same food you've been eating, only less of it. That will be much easier to adjust to than completely overhauling your dietary makeup AND reducing your caloric intakae... because calories are what matter for loss, not what you eat. Doing keto or any "diet" won't automatically lead to weight loss.

Also this if your whole sugar thing is based on diabetes. You need to talk to someone about how to monitor your carbs, because you'll probably need to watch all carbs and not just specifically sugar (meaning you'd also need to monitor fruit intake). If your health issues are just weigh and not diabetes related then sugar should not be something that you strive to avoid, especially if it leads to yo-yo dieting or fad tricks.
