Not losing weight

Can anyone help please. I have been doing the slimming world plan for a few weeks and stayed the same weight. this week I put on 1lb. I worked out what I was eating into calories and it is around 1400 per day. I don't eat processed foods or sweets and cakes etc. I did count calories last year and stuck to 1400 calories and didn't lose then either. Five years ago I nearly got to my goal with 1200 calories per day. I don't do strenuous exercise but walk briskly for 40 mins per day. I am menopausal can this slow weight? Do I need to go back to 1200 calories per day to lose? I would also like to know if any of you have done well with Slimming world. Thanks x

What're your stats (height & weight)? Do you weigh everything you eat with a food scale where possible? Do you eat your exercise calories back?0

All of this, plus can you open your diary?0 -
Are you very short or petite? Maybe 1400 is too much, though I doubt it. Or maybe you're underestimating what you're eating? Do you exercise?0

Stats and open your diary for help
But also weigh your food and log accurately, don't overestimate calorie burns in exercise0 -

When I am doing Slimming world pasta rice potatos meat chicken fruit is all free, so not weighing them. prehaps I just have too much! I walk briskly for 40 minutes each day. I need to lose 1.5 stone. I weigh 11st 13lb I am 5ft 5" 1.65 meters. Thanks0 -

No i have been doing Slimming World where most natural food can be eaten freely, probably where I am going wrong I probably have too much. I am 5ft 5" and weigh 11st 13lb

I think you have answered your own question! If you aren't weighing certain foods then you cannot be sure your calorie count is accurate. Weigh and measure everything using a digital scale for a couple of weeks - sticking to your 1400 cal goal. If you still haven't lost anything after that then maybe you are like me one of the unhappy souls who has to do 1200 to lose. I am also menopausal but that is just another excuse!!0

The most likely cause is that you are eating more than you are burning. Most of us move a lot less in our 40's and in western culture because we sit in front of our computers. Your maintenance calories are about what you are consuming so you've found your maintenance zone. The good news is that you could go to weighing your food and tracking the rice and pasta more closely. Add a bit more activity here and there...an hour of window shopping, gardening, housework, walking after supper etc.0

"Free" as in no calories/points? I'm assuming Slimming World is similar to Weight Watchers with points, etc. Everything you listed has calories. Do you think the calories magically disappear because someone tells you that they're "free"? I really don't understand the logic.0 -

Isn't one serving of pasta 200 calories? Rice and potatoes are just as bad. Certain cuts of meat are too. Chicken legs/thighs are certainly more calorie dense than a breast.

So you have no idea how much you're consuming, especially as there are a lot of really calorie dense items on here.
Start weighing and logging everything.0 -

I know nothing of "Slimming world", but it allows you to "eat...pasta rice potatos meat chicken fruit is all free"? You don't count those calories? So you are eating that on top of your daily allowance of calories?0 -

All of this, plus can you open your diary?
I will start using my food diary and counting calories, let's hope it works

There's the problem. You're eating too many calories (maintenance it sounds like). You need to be in a deficit to lose.0 -

I just thought I would try Slimming World, but I agree too many potatoes or too much pasta can't be good, I'm going back to calorie counting, but I did that prior to Slimming World and didn't lose on 1400, so may try 1200 for a few weeks.

I wouldn't reduce your calories until you know that 1400 won't work for you. You need to do a month of accurate (weigh all solids, measure all liquids) logging before you can decide if it's working or not working for you.0 -

I think I will count calories again for a few weeks and see how I go. Years ago I could lose weigh a lot easier, so menopause could have something to do with it. Do you not lose when on 1400 calories?

If you do it properly i.e create an accurate deficit, then it will.0 -

Slimming World is based on what they call free food meaning fruit and veg, along with lean meat, chicken and fish, lentils and rice etc. Any other food such a cheese or what ever you fancy counts a syns. When I write that down it sounds like a silly fad diet . I am going back to calorie counting.

Sorry, but how do you know that you're consuming 1400 calories if you're not weighing anything? Potatoes, pasta, rice, and even meat are calorie dense foods. IF those are "free," does that mean you're eating as much as you want of them? I think a likelier explanation is that you are consuming way more calories than you think.

I followed the Slimming World plan and also worked out what I had into calories, an average day was 1400. I am definetly going back to calorie counting as I only have 9 weeks until I go on holiday and need to lose at least a stone. Thanks for your help

A different question. Since you've been doing "Slimming World" have you been gaining or maintaining? I'd say for a week or two, eat what you've been eating BUT weigh your solid food & measure your liquids so you know how many calories approximately you've been eating.
Use that info to set a new goal. If you were eating 1800 and maintaining, 1400 should be good for weight loss. You probably were not eating 1400...0 -

I'm going to give calorie counting another go. I was weighing and counting calories prior to Slimming world but I stayed the same weight. then I tried SW.
