hello has anyone actually lost weight on quetiapine and mirtazipine? So iv been on quetiapine since early 2014 and started on mirtazipine in January after having a stay in hospital iv put nearly 5 stone on since January 2015 my diet hasn't changed and my exercise routine is the same I don't over eat I aim for around 1200 calories daily and everything I eat is fresh I drink lots of water so eat pretty clean. Iv been told that my medication is notorious for weight gain and it's difficult to maintain or loose weight!!
So if anyone has any tips and advice i would be very greatful :)

I'm stuck in a similar situation. Taking methimazole for grave's disease and suddenly gaining on 1200! We test and reassess next month, my endo isn't super worried as long as we get my levels down. But man oh man, I feel great but this gain is a real bummer.

Count calories. Exercise more. Don't put your life in danger with magic pills.

If you are under the assumption that quetiapine & mirtazipine are magic weight loss pills, you would be wrong.

If they are legitimate, nobody would be overweight.

    mirtazipine is an antidepressant
quetiapine is an antipsychotic that is often prescribed as an adjunct to antidepressants to help sleep.

That wasn't one of the medications quoted in the OP's post.

Now that we have the nonsense out of the way, I take quetiapine in addition to a different antidepressant and I have been able to lose over 100 lb. so far. I take it in the evenings so I can sleep and I do have problems with late night hunger. I have been making sure I have plenty of calories available for snacks to take with me when I go to bed to read.

Then why is the topic of your thread concerning losing weight on these medications?

Because quetiapine is well known as a medication that causes insatiable hunger, therefore making it difficult to lose weight.

One of the indicated side effects of Mirtazapine is weight gain, so the OP was asking if anyone has been on it and managed to lose weight. This has *nothing* to do with diet pills.

Yup. I forgot to mention I've taken it before and yes put in some weight but that was due to increased appetite.

Do you know this great website called "Google"? Try it. You can search for all kinds of cool information before you open your mouth to insert your foot.

Fun fact: mirtazapine is commonly used as an appetite stimulant for dogs and cats. So I can only imagine how a human may feel/react from that particular side effect especially when combined with another drug known for causing hunger/weight gain :(

I don't have personal experience with either of those drugs except mirtaz. in a veterinary setting, but I did have a weight gain reaction to a different drug. I had to talk to my doctor about other options because I just couldn't exist on less than 1000 calories a day forever and exercise on top of that. I'm sure this is a silly question, but have you talked to your prescriber? I hate to be one of those commenters who just says "Talk to your doctor..." but these sound like important medications so maybe your prescriber can help find a different combination that works better for you? That's what I wound up having to do :/

I exercise weigh all my food count my calories do everything right and nothing my weight either stays the same or low and behold I gain it errgh any tips and advice I'm totally greatful for :)

I'm a psychiatrist. There are other medication options. If your weight is unmanageable on these 2 meds, then see someone about making a switch. The goal should be achieving a balance of physical and mental health, not sacrificing one for the other. Good luck!!

I spoke with doctors at my gp practice and in hospital and they flat out refused to look at my meds even tho I told them all my worries self esteem and confidence plays a massive part as I was a UK size 8-10 in January and now I'm a 16-18 I'm switching to another gp so hopefully they will start listening :)

I do not know how the system works where you live, but you need a psychiatrist. There is no way the average gp can help you finetune these meds and help you. And congratulations for still managing to maintain a healhty lifestyle despite all this!

If your gp doesnt care then try to find another one. Sometimes you have to switch in order to find the right person for you. Good luck to you!
