Splenda is the Robin to aspartame's Batman.
I would just drink the stuff with sugar if I liked soda that much.0 -
Sugar-sweetened isn't an option from the major brands - they all went HFCS a long long time ago. Personally I prefer the taste of aspartame versions to HFCS versions.0

It's ridiculous that people think any form of fake sugar is better (or worse) than the other. I prefer the taste of spenda in my coffee. I like "normal" diet sodas. Stevia tastes horrible.0

Why did they make the change? Did they say?0

They're all doing it - Coke is in a slow rollout of "Coke Life" which is a mix of Stevia and cane sugar.
Just marketing depts being marketing departments...0 -
That's nice.0

Well...I am excited about that. I am going to check the Diet Pepsi labels, starting tonight. Thank you for posting!0

They'll apparently start hitting shelves this August.

¬_¬ can't they just leave things alone? I don't like change. *sigh*0
-
But, but, but... hasn't aspartame been tested more extensively than Splenda?
Am I missing something?0 -
I found out some diet pop has carbs too so I went totally to water instead. It is good to hear they will use splenda now. I might try it.0

That's not quite accurate. They're not replacing it with Splenda, they're using something that is also used in Splenda. "Instead of aspartame, Diet Pepsi, Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi and Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi will be sweetened with a blend of artificial sweeteners sucralose and acesulfame potassium in the U.S. The new drinks will hit shelves in August."0

Agreed Whelp, I will stop drinking Diet Pepsi when the "new and improved" version comes out. I will switch to whatever DOES have aspartame in it. I like Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi equally (the aspartame ones), and very much dislike Coke Zero (the Splenda one). I'm sure Splenda Pepsi will equally disappoint me.

I took the connotation of saying sucralose and acesulfame potassium and used a "brand name".
Acesulfame potassium is combined with aspartame/splenda in a lot of sodas.

Coke zero has aspartame and acesulfame potassium...no sucralose

Problem is Splenda is processed, too. If they used actual Stevia, that would be awesome but ultimately Pepsi and Coke both have their own (Reb A & which are both processed. ugg0

Just drink water! It's the safest route0

Oops! My mistake (I haven't had a Coke Zero in ages--forgot what was in it). Coke Zero still = awful (to me). I think I confused myself with the "regional store brand" diet cola my husband bought that is sucralose.0 -
can anyone explain the difference, thx0

I am see the role for coke lite - it has less sugar, therefore less calories, but presumably doesn't have the artificial flavour after taste that some people find in diet sodas.
Compromise drink for those who want to reduce sugar/calories but don't like artificial sweeteners.
But no good for diabetics who need to avoid sugary drinks altogether and I won't be drinking it myself as I like diet coke et al and I prefer a no calorie drink to a low calorie one.

I really dont think it is about the safety of Splenda vs aspartame so much as about the public perception.
If the public doesn't have confidence in aspartame for whatever misguided reasons then it's a marketing decision to go with the perceived better alternative.
