I know this generally seems like a dumb question on its face, but are there any healthy fast food options? I've got A LOT better at planning in advance to avoid the temptation, when I forget a lunch that day or I work later than planned and get hungry... there's a Wendy's, Tim Horton's, and Little Caesar's in walking distance from my office. I avoid LC but tend to go to TH for either a buffalo chicken wrap with extra chicken, or a chili. I used to get a 4 piece spicy nugget from Wendy's but seems like a total waste of calories even though not huge. I'd like to try a burger or something once in a while but seems like a waste of fat and carbs. Not a big fry person anyway. Prefer TH chili to Wendy's. A little further there is Subway, KFC, or Big John's (basically steak subs). Subway I know is supposed to be healthy but I always feel like they have enormous amounts of bread with very little meat/protein. I occasionally grab grilled chicken from KFC, like a breast and wing grilled. Any thoughts on occasionally doing the drive through thing and what you can get?

I would suggest to pack a healthy lunch everyday. Set an alarm or have some kind of reminder so that you don't forget to pack your own healthy lunch. maybe have one day a week, say friday, that you can eat something from a fast food place. Majority of these fast food places do have some lower calorie options but are they really healthy? probably not. it's all artifical flavors, preservatives, loaded with chemicals and not nutrient filled. Not to mention high in fat and usually oily. however, if you absolutely have to, I'd say to stick to the salads and baked potatoe, chili as it was mentioned.

I'm a big fan of packing my own lunch (I get to eat what I like, I save money, I get to use the rest of my lunch break to walk around instead of waiting in line), but if someone wants to eat out, I don't think it is a problem. Things like artificial flavorings, preservatives, and chemicals -- these are just scary buzzwords. What harm are they going to do? The fat content can be controlled by what one orders.

I would suggest you do some research about what exactly goes into the food. Most are carcinogenic and lead to the rise of major health problems. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but this is backed up by research. If you seriously believe these are just "scary buzzwords" you need a reality check. Also I didn't say to never eat out. I just said it might be a good idea to do so just once a week like Friday.

What makes you think people here haven't?
    I have.

This comment wasn't aimed at the whole my fitness pal community. It was written as a response to a person who said that preservatives/chemicals were "buzzfeed words" and do not do any harm. I am sure many people on mfp are aware of what they eat.

If you're in Canada, here's a fusion table I did that includes A&W, BK, DQ, Extreme Pita, KFC, McDonald's, Subway, Tim's and Wendy's:
    https://www.google.com/fusiontables/DataSource?docid=1ERhXXqFYj_hW1Jk687tzCbY86AlnGaH8vx19Pvwf

You can sort food by calories, fat, sat fat, protein, fibre, etc

You even have bonus columns of Protein/100 calories, Protein:Carb ratio, and Protein:Fat ratio if you're watching those numbers.

    hope that helps

Are you kidding?! This is amazeballs!!!

The Wendy's Ultimate Chicken Grill Sandwich isn't a bad source of protein if you're craving fast food.

What substances are you talking about? "Loaded with chemicals" isn't very specific. And if it is so dangerous, why is it okay to eat on Friday?

Now, let me just say that I am not a health nut. Not all these pertain to fast food; this is aimed more at your claim that all food additives and preservatives do not cause any harm. Above are links to journals and research studies that show a different side. Also, I do not say that “anyone who has eaten fast food will die” or that it is something to never eat. Moderation is key in my opinion along with being aware of the ingredients within the food you consume. My intention is not to start an internet debate. If our views are different, we can agree to disagree like mature adults. Have a good day!

So how did you determine that once a week was safe to eat something that causes cancer?

I never claimed that ALL food additives and preservatives didn't cause harm. I was challenging your statement that we should avoid fast food (except on Fridays) because it is "loaded with chemicals."

Both Wendy's and Tim Hortons have all their nutritional information on their websites. I've gone on their sites to look up the nutritional info many times for Tim Hortons (I always seem to be within walking distance of one from my work. My bus stop where I get off is right by one. This morning the bus door opened right in line with their door.) as I go there a lot. I've done it before for Wendy's as well. (Though I'm not near one any more). I've also actually compared nutritional information from fast food places before when I was wanting to get a wrap. I looked up all the places near me and found the one with the lowest calories.

id go with a sandwich and soup from Timmies
Timmies has as high (higher) sodium content than Wendy's ......

I have to agree on this! I got a breakfast sandwich there once. All I could taste was salt. I never got the breakfast sandwich again.

Just a thought, for those saying there's too much bread for Subway sandwiches, I always ask for the wrap. Not sure how many calories it saves, though. Another bonus, it's neater to eat, since a lot less spills out :)

You're not saving any calories. That wrap has 310 calories. The breads are all under 300 calories....the highest one is the Italian Herbs and cheese for 250. The rest are all under 250.

You can save calories on the bread by having them scoop out the good part. It saves at least 50 calories. And yes, I totally took the scooped bread part home and weighed it.
  • I've heard that Wendy's has great salads.

I absolutely love Wendy's ultimate chicken grill sandwich, no tomato. It's 360 calories, which is more than I would normally have for a meal, but really not bad for fast food. It's delicious.

When I travel, I tend to live off of Subway because pretty much anywhere you go in the United States, there is probably one nearby. If there is one close, I order a couple of grilled chicken subs, load them up with green peppers, tomatoes and maybe some bacon but no cheeses, sauces or mayo and keep them in a cooler. The sodium is higher than I'd like but for days when I'm out hiking around, they're a good go-to meal with good amounts of protein.
