There isn't much fair or balanced about smoking - it kills (case closed)
You can say that and I know its "common knowledge" but honestly if you really look into it the research is pretty limited and definitely not conclusive my gramps would be the first to tell you that. Anyways to change the topic what do you guys like to do for fun
You legitimately believe that the research into smoking related diseases is 'limited' wow
I'm just saying its not clear cut not saying its healthy or unhealthy per say probably not the best for you but people watch tv eat candy drink etc none of thse are healthy and they've all been proven to be just as damageing as smoking
Sorry, but you couldn't be less informed if you tried. A quick Google search of "Health risks of smoking" comes up with over 85 million hits. If you can find a good, peer reviewed study that says smoking is a-ok, we'll listen. Your grandfather smoking all those years is anecdotal, not evidence that smoking isn't harmful.0 -

My grandpa started smoking at 11 and died at 94. Was treated twice for lung cancer and died of emphysema after living a few years on oxygen. He seemed healthy enough for a while. Imagine how long he would have lived if he hadn't smoked. Sometimes, it not how long they live, but how long they could have otherwise. I bet my grandpa would have made it another 10 years.0

I just googled health risks of barak obama and got 110 million hits lol. How many hits u get isnt a argument that works. And he may be anecdotal but hes probably just as healthy as you are
So, you still haven't provided any peer reviewed studies that say smoking is good for you. If you'd like me to spend 3 minutes finding some that say it leads to cancer, emphysema and all other kinds of health issues, I'd be happy to. You know, if you're incapable.
When you did your google search, were you actually able to spell words correctly?

Here's a review with 61 references to papers that pretty clearly conclude that smoking is bad for you. 1, this doesn't seem particularly limited as far as research goes. 2, if this is "definitely not conclusive", where are studies that you would suggest refute these findings? And keep in mind, this is a review of the research on light and intermittent smokers.

I'm happy that your gramps has lived to be 95. But science doesn't care about what one guy did. It cares about what happens on a broad scale. And on a broad scale, it has been proven that smoking, on the whole, is bad for you.
Your grandpa could also dance in the middle of the street for an hour in the middle of rush hour. If he happened to survive, that wouldn't mean it wasn't a dangerous idea.

Watching tv has been proven to be as bad as smoking? Please site the peer reviewed source that proves this. Or are you just not clear on what the word "prove" means?0 -

Psst... he was being sarcastic. You said watching TV was just as bad as smoking. There is extremely strong evidence to link smoking to cancer and emphysema.
Seriously, you say you've looked at the evidence, and you clearly HAVEN'T. I thought everyone knew by now that smoking means gambling with your life. My gran lost that gamble. As did my godmother. As did my cousin. They all died of lung cancer caused by smoking - my cousin didn't even smoke much. Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, including 43 known cancer-causing (carcinogenic) compounds and 400 other toxins. These include nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide, as well as formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, and DDT.0 -

My grandmother literally smoked herself to death, died after a extremely painful 10 years with Emphysema. Smoking related deaths are pretty unpleasant. I'm under no illusion that it is good for you.
That being said, my Mom was the world's healthiest person right up to the point she died of ovarian cancer before 60.
So I smoke a cigarette once in awhile even though it's bad for me.0 -
fitness_derek wrote: »Okay to be honest on that research article, gave it a quick scan and in my opinion it seems kinda biased, not sure it's what I'm looking for
I agree. I just posted it to see if anyone else was dumb enough to believe that garbage. So stupid.

FYI, other cancers, not just lung cancers, can also be caused by smoking. This is because the chemicals get into the bloodstream, which obviously goes to other parts of the body. My godmother's breast cancer was caused by her smoking.0 -

My Gramps never touched the stuff, and he's in his 80s still being awesome. In fact, he says the one time the doctor tried to explain germs to him was the one time in his life he had a headache, so clearly the theory doesn't cause all the health people say it does.

I started smoking in my teens, quit in my 30's. I started getting the "smokers cough" and shortness of breath. Shortly after quitting I joined a gym. Doing cardio exercise was tough, but slowly I was able to get my lungs back in shape and could jog and run again. If I had it do all over again I would never have started smoking, it's all negative and no positives.0

What's to debate?0

Personally I don't smoke. I did when I was real young, but then I got a job that offered an insurance discount for non-smokers. So I quit in order to save money on health insurance (it seemed more tangible than the savings on cigarettes).
Now that I'm older and wiser, I get upset about second hand smoke. I'm ok with people making dumb decisions as long as it only affects themselves. When I'm in an establishment open to the public that allows smoking, then I get stuck with the negative effects of other's choices to smoke. So I believe it should be illegal at all businesses that are open to the public. In my state, it is already illegal at many businesses, but not all. In other states, there are different rules. The other factor to consider is the harm that smokers have on their children with second hand smoke. Otherwise, assuming you have no kids, if you do it alone in your own home or vehicle so it only hurts you, then go ahead.0 -
