    @Aresende90 - beautiful puppies!
    With my guy I waited until he was 18 mo to start running with him at the advice of my vet but it may have just been because of his breed. Before that though I started working with him on leash on walks. I kept the leash short so he was right next to me and had kibble in my hand closest to him. If he walked right with me he got a treat. The better he did the more he got and over time I weaned him off the treats. When we first started running we did have a couple of spills (me not him) where he crossed in front of me to see another dog or after a rabbit. Now he stays right with me and will point at the rabbits, birds and lizards as we are running. I agree with @7lenny7 on everything and especially the water and no retractable leashes. We have doggy drinking fountains along our trail but on longer runs I always take a bottle of water. Hobbes has learned to drink when I squirt the water so it works for both of us. I use a Kurgo waist leash that I love as it allows my hands to be free and can be adjusted to different lengths. I make sure to watch him for signs that he is getting too hot, even if I am not. I have taken water and wet him down, especially on his ears, belly and hind leg area to cool him down when I have been concerned.

    I have run a couple of races with him (also for doggy charities) and they were really fun. The only caution I would have is if yours are like mine they may want to run really fast to catch up to the dogs and people in front of them. I like to joke that I got my 5k PR because he was pulling me the entire way!

    @annekka - You have to wait to run with puppies on leash because it can damage their growth plates and cause them lots of problems with their backs, hips and legs as they get older. When we run them on leash they typically don't go as fast as they might off leash but they also don't get to stop whenever they want or need to.

    @skippygirlsmom - I am so sorry you had such a miserable experience! I am glad you are feeling better though! Tomorrow's run I am sure, will be much better! Also - congrats on hitting your goal (on your bad run too)!!!
    @Stoshew71 - Congratulations on the great race despite the hammy and glute issues!
    @7lenny7 - Awesome job with the 5k and making it under the pace you were shooting for!

    I got up early for my long run but didn't actually get out the door for a couple of hours. I was worried it was going to get too hot and would have to cut it short but it was beautiful out, no clouds at first but cool and while I was out it got cloudier and cloudier. We actually got a bit of rain after I got home which was nice - just wish there was more of it. Here is a picture of my view from another trail. In the foreground is the Honda Center aka The Anaheim Duck Pond. The silver arched building is the new transportation center, called Arctic and just behind that is Angel stadium (the big red A is on the left and the stadium is actually behind and to the right of the Arctic in the picture). The brown dirt unfortunately is our very dry riverbed :( I crossed over the other side and ran to the stadium on the trail and then back staying on that side of the river on my run today.

    @shanaber I didn't know that about not running with the dogs when they are younger. I bought a harness for my smallest dog hoping to take her out. She's about 3, half border collie/cocker spaniel. Sweet little thing. Would you advise against the harness? I haven't even gotten her leash trained yet. I have a training collar for my bigger dogs. I think she'd shut down on a collar.

    <<<this happened today. 5 mile course which I jogged the majority of, except for the approach to obstacles, so I'm counting it as a full 5.

    Went out for a LSR today and it wasn't... somehow ended up with a few PR's including an under 30 5k. I even turned my tracker off when I was walking but yet BOTH my run trackers measured the usual course longer than usual. Though I now understand why I had to walk now that I know how unintentionally fast I was running. I'm still figuring out pacing. And here I thought I had to walk because it was getting too hot.

    According to the trackers I ran 11.56 km for a June total of 83.5 Km out of my goal of 70 km. Over 10 km over my May total and still have a few days left of June.

    @Stoshew71 - Congrats!
    @7lenny7 - Awesome job on that 5k!
    @skippygirlsmom - hope your next run is an awesome one after that one! Sounds terrible.

    I was up late last night so I slept in. Debated if I should take the day off to avoid the late morning sun and heat. Go figure, I ran. :tongue: I turned into a fairly brutal run. Was not doing so good about 7 miles in and realized I was needing water. So I polished off the last half of my 32oz bottle which I was saving for mile 8 and a gel. Swung into a convenience store to refill my bottle just after mile 8. That all went down by mile 10 and I was still thirsty! Was able to refill at a McDonalds luckily. Rest of the run felt better, but after getting home I felt a little beat up. Got a fair amount of sun too, on purpose. No burning, I knew the timing and amount of shading on the route would make it unlikely that I would get burnt...but I absorbed as much as I probably can without getting burnt. Probably the last time I go that long without sunblock. Will play it by ear whether or not I do my planned 8 miles tomorrow.

    6/2 - 4.1 miles
    6/3 - 4 miles (8.1 total)
    6/4 - 4.1 miles (12.2 total)

    @Timby1 What a run! Congrats!
    Circuit Training this am and a 4 mile hike up and down the hill with my family. Lovely time. We all walked fast as fast as we could. Tempted to count it toward the running goal, but didn't. 3 more days to get in about 13 more miles.

    @Elise4270 - Harnesses are great. Better (safer) than collars for training in my opinion because they don't pull or choke on the dog's neck. The best ones have the leash hooking in the front so it tugs across their chest if they are pulling in front of you. Most dogs don't like that feeling and will stop pulling. I used a harness for at least the 1st year with my pup and still use the harness from his car hookup when we go places exciting like getting into agility class where he has a tendency to pull still.
    @Timby1 - looks like fun!!
    @WhatMeRunning - nice run despite the heat. Doesn't being in the sun exhaust you? I find I am drained - not so much from the running but from being in the sun so much. I do wear lots of sunscreen but still don't tolerate it well.
    @JimCrackinDandy - hills and more hills, hiking or running! You go girl!

    Realized I never posted my mileage accumulation for today. Tomorrow is a dog beach/rest day!

    @7lenny7 Thank you for all the tips! They are already use to walking 4 miles at a time..would that change, or increase their distance for running? I've done 2-6 with them...they trot more than a full out run and do take frequent potty breaks and seem to tolerate it just fine...but I may be doing to much to start and need to decrease the distance..I also need to start taking water with me! I hate carrying water so maybe a clip would work for us too ..and yes, we do it in the evening so it is much cooler :). Great job on your 5k! Such an awesome feeling to set new PRs! WtG!

    @shanaber I was thinking of getting a leash for my waist, but I have to do a little more training for pulling first..or I'll end up on the ground! I had asked my vet when we first got them and she had said 12 months. They tolerate long distance walks very well, but I may be running to far to soon. I'm going to start helping my boyfriend train for the "pack" 5k as he is not a runner so that will be good for them too.

    Just an update: I ran 7 miles yesterday non stop for the first time ever! Lots of hills and dirt road. My legs hate me today but I'm so proud of myself! Persistence pays off! Keep it up everyone, you all rock!

    Congrats to all who are hitting their goals! For those not able to hit them there are plenty more opportunities ahead!

    @shanaber - The sun was the major factor making yesterday's run hard, after thinking about it. I drank before leaving, took water with me even! The humidity was 93% but the temp was around 80, so that could have been worse. So the high angle of the sun was the big difference yesterday compared to normal. Despite my Irish and Scottish heritage and light hair color with red speckling I actually tan well, so do my parents. My kids were not so lucky though. Even so, yeah, I think the sun beating down just made what heat there was seem a whole lot worse.

    @Aresende90 - Congrats on the new distance!

    No running for me today. I felt a few too many tender areas through the night, one of them that same spot on my achilles from several weeks ago. It's even more mild than last time, but I don't think pushing myself is at all necessary right now. This is the end of a recovery week for me, so I need to keep that in mind. My mileage is satisfactory, that helps. Actually, I've had the most mileage ever these last few weeks. So, I'm ok with taking today and tomorrow off.

    A sign I am obsessed with running... leaving in the morning for a two week trip and the ONLY things I have packed are my running clothes and gear. Usually I buy new clothes for a trip. The only thing I have purchased is a new sports bra and running socks. I've mapped out the days I want to run on a calendar. I won't have biking or lifting while away so it will be all running. Hope the weather is better up north than Florida!

    @7lenny7 glad the 5K went well! Definitely check out your max HR (via hill repeats) as for 5Ks, I can usually get close to peaking at 95% of my max when racing that distance (but need to step back to 80-85% for marathons/halfs). Still, I'm sure you'll be hitting sub 25 minute 5ks at your rate of progress!

    Ended up taking a rest day yesterday, and my 12 miler this AM just flew by. 6 more to go to hit my target.

    6/2 - 5 miles
    6/3 - 4.5 miles
    6/4 - 5 miles
    6/6 - 0.5 miles
    6/7 - 10 miles
    6/9 - 4.5 miles
    6/10 - 7 miles
    6/11 - 6 miles
    6/12 - 6 miles
    6/14 - 15 miles
    6/15 - 8 miles
    6/16 - 6 miles
    6/17 - 4 miles
    6/18 - 1 mile (pre lifting treadmill)
    6/21 - 6.5 miles (1.5 treadmill + 5 outdoors)
    6/22 - 10 miles
    6/23 - 6 miles
    6/24 - 6 miles
    6/25 - 6 miles (including 8x400s at 6 min/mile pace)

    Preachin' to the choir! I have an account just for running/biking gear and race expenses. I've drained it. I've been calculating when I can get more shorts a cycling shirt and start buying winter gear.

    I was so busy yesterday I didn't have time to read all the posts. First thanks to everyone for their well wishes. I felt fine for the rest of the of the day. I didn't feel hot or anything yesterday it just snuck up on me. Maybe it was the half pop tart I ate LOL

    @scoutmomof8 that is a big difference in temp from morning to day time 40 degrees wow! We were 61 this morning with about 50% humidity first time it's been that low in weeks.
    @jimcrackindandy wow on the cookies, you are a very good friend
    @aresende90 @7lenny7 gave great advice on running with dogs. Watch running on pavement in summer, their pads can burn very easily. Macy loves to run with me but I run on pavement all the time and she won't stay on the grass on the side of the road. She's a lab/poodle mix and her pads are normally rough, but running really smoothed them out. The vet said to watch that. I'll run with her occasionally, but most of the time we will walk when I get home from running. Vet also told me to wait until she was a year old as puppies it hurts their bones for them to run too much.
    @stoshew71 super run!
    @7lenny7 fantastic job in your 5K nothing feels better than beating your goal
    @shanaber love the pictures of where you ran.
    @whatmerunning glad there are so many places to get water where you are running. There is a creek that runs all along our greenway and the water is usually so nice and refreshing if you want to splash your face etc. Today it was flowing mud yuck! Some kids were playing in it, yuck!
    @jorocka love the picture - interesting background.
    @ddmom0811 have a safe trip. You sound like me the first things that go into the suitcase is the running stuff. When we went on vacation Allen said "did you leave room in there for clothes" I said no I plan to put that in your suitcase :smile:
