I had a friend who kept getting flats this spring (a couple times even two in single ride!) until I talked him into putting a gatorskin on his rear tire. They might be heavy but I find them supper tough and durable so do a great job of keeping me from getting flats. I often do long (century +) rides solo and don't want to be fixing flats all the time or stressing about not having enough extra tubes to get me through the ride and back home. For the last 3 years of rolling with gatorskins ((continental ultra gatorskin) I am averaging 1 flat every 1,500-2,000 miles. Before that was about every 500 miles.

I found 28s and moderate inflation (70-90psi reinflate every 2-3 weeks => 210#+~25# total bike starting and 165#+~20# total bike now) a great deterrence against flats. I switched to 28 Conti Grand Prix in 1989 but now just use cheapo Specialized. Contis has a better feel and grip when wet but wear fast and are $$. Not worth the extra $ for me. Never noticed any difference in drag (verse 20s at 110-120 psi) but welcome the better cornering and comfort. Over 3k on current set and no flats so far. Got one flat on two sets of Contis back in 90 (~4k combined?) before taking a 23 years hiatus from riding.0

I got 2 flats in 2 weeks so I had enough and I went to the LBS and we both think the rim tape rolled up its edge and cut the tube so I put in velox cloth tape on the rear and so far so good.
Mine was red but same exact stuff. Stay away from it. Funny thing is the LBS (specialized dealer) recommended this over the velox, until he saw it match what I already had installed. Before I walked in I knew I was going velox anyways.
I have 25mm Conti US on there now because that's what came with it but when they are spent I will probably go 28mm gatorskin. I am 6' 7" and <260 lb with a 22 lb fully dressed bike so extra ounces and drag are of little concern to me. lol

6/04 - 31 miles @16.1mph w/1,500' climbing.
6/06 - 157miles @15.5mph w/7,150' climbing. 10hr11min moving and 11hr45min total. 8.5miles of which was milled paving and took me 40 min to ride over. New one day distance PR (by 5 miles and -1hr45min). Last of my endurance training rides so taking it easy the next 13 days.
6/13 - 24 miles @15.9mph w/ 1,000' climbing. Heat wave struck 3 days ago and I'm melting into a puddle of sweat with absolutely no energy. Woke up this morning and it was 89f/32c INSIDE my apartment.
6/15 - 12 miles @19.2mph w/ 550' climbing. I guess I can still ride fast. When i try.
6/20 - 202 miles @14.6mph w/ 9,000' climbing. New 1 day distance PR!!! Rained for the last 9 hours of this ride. Both Garmin and phone died. Me? almost. No energy mile 94-125, better the last 77 but was moving really slowly. Tired night riding for the first time (last hour) and it was actually kind of fun.
6/27 - 62 miles @15.9mph w/3,450' climbing. Did the whole ride with no stops/breaks. Left knee started to really hurt after mile 20. Muscles were feeling good after the week off though.

Took my longest single ride of 32 miles today and only took two 5 minute breaks the while trip so I felt good about that. It took some route planning on MMR. If weather is nice I will go for 50 this coming weekend.

I'm 6'6.5" 220 and I run Gatorskin 23's and usually average 1-2 flats a year. I keep the tires at around 110 and the extra air seems to help.

With 17 rainy miles tonight, hit my goal for the month (along with my running - 140 miles and swimming - 8 miles targets earlier today). I'll probably do some riding tomorrow if the weather is better, but it is nice to finally hit my number with a day to spare, and without needing to play too much catch-up during the final week.
