Rowan (my husband) and I completed a ride we have been talking about and preparing for for a while. We rode a century (100 miles) on our Bike Friday Pocket Llamas (folding bikes)!
We didn't break any speed records, but ...
We set off shortly after 9 am and rode with my father about 14 km, then he returned home and we continued on ... to Hope. The route is a little bit hilly out that way, but nothing too significant. We flew into Hope with an increasing wind behind us, but knew that we'd be into it on the way back.
So we stopped at DQ for some fuel ... chili cheese dogs and blizzards.
Returning to our start location wasn't too bad at first, but the last 7 or 8 km were a slog ... right into that ever-increasing wind.
118 km complete!
We stopped for more fuel and then made a decision about where to go next. We decided it would work best for us to cycle into the wind, and then to return with a tailwind.
The route we chose zig-zagged into the wind so that sometimes it was, again, a slog, but other times not too bad. And finally, we turned around and cruised home. We would have done the trip home a lot quicker if we hadn't been as worn out as we were. The wind takes it out of a person ... and I was experiencing one particular fit issue which we'll need to sort out if we're going to entertain the idea of doing longer rides on our Bike Fridays
Nevertheless ... our first century (100 miles) this year is complete. And we did it in 9 hours and 40 min, including all breaks, which is well within rando time.
And along the way we saw ... planes and trains ... and cows, horses, goats, hawks, crows, geese, cats and dogs ...

It is winter. The sun is setting at 4:45 pm, there's snow on the mountain, and it is cold. But happily, this is the month where daylight hours will start increasing again ... just need to make it through June.

06 Sat - 100 kilometre ride on our Bike Friday Pocket Llamas (folding bikes). The route was relatively flat, but had the added challenge of rain for the first half of the ride. Fortunately it was a warm day for winter, and wasn't at all windy for a change!
That was the longest distance we have ridden the folding bikes so far. It was kind of a test ride to see how we would go over that distance. We were reasonably comfortable. I was having a few back/right hip issues, but stretching seemed to help.
100.72 km in 6 hours 25 min 34 sec total.
(Moving time was 5 hours 31 min 26 sec)

6/04 - 31 miles @16.1mph w/1,500' climbing.
6/06 - 157miles @15.5mph w/7,150' climbing. 10hr11min moving and 11hr45min total. 8.5miles of which was milled paving and took me 40 min to ride over. New one day distance PR (by 5 miles and -1hr45min). Last of my endurance training rides so taking it easy the next 13 days.
6/13 - 24 miles @15.9mph w/ 1,000' climbing. Heat wave struck 3 days ago and I'm melting into a puddle of sweat with absolutely no energy. Woke up this morning and it was 89f/32c INSIDE my apartment.
6/15 - 12 miles @19.2mph w/ 550' climbing. I guess I can still ride fast. When i try.
6/20 - 202 miles @14.6mph w/ 9,000' climbing. New 1 day distance PR!!! Rained for the last 9 hours of this ride. Both Garmin and phone died. Me? almost. No energy mile 94-125, better the last 77 but was moving really slowly. Tired night riding for the first time (last hour) and it was actually kind of fun.

Wow... very nice job racking up a double-century! Still, can't imagine what 200 miles with 9000' of climbing would do to my legs. Good luck with your recovery!
Ended up doing an easy 50 with my neighbor yesterday (as he finally snagged a road bike and wanted to take a longer ride), but I've otherwise been taking it easy the past few days as it is starting to get too hot to ride here in the Florida summer heat. Returning up north tomorrow as the pirates are back in town Tuesday.

I cannot believe you ride 100 miles on the foldup bikes! My parents have those, (I ride a lot, on a nice light road bike) I've ridden the folding bikes, for maybe 5-7 miles- I could not imagine completing a century on one of those!!!!!

I am jumping in the middle of the month but really need a challenge right now. I had two amazing rides while I was in France on vacation and am dying to keep going. Right now I don't have a bike so my distance will be on the bike at the gym. Last year I was riding 10-15 miles a day so that is my end goal. For this week, my goal will be 20 miles. I can't wait to get started. Thank you for this!!0

I cannot believe you ride 100 miles on the foldup bikes! My parents have those, (I ride a lot, on a nice light road bike) I've ridden the folding bikes, for maybe 5-7 miles- I could not imagine completing a century on one of those!!!!!

Ours are custom built Bike Fridays so they fit us quite well, although I am having an issue with mine which I need to resolve. But they are built for long tours and are generally quite comfortable.

I am Dutch, I don't own a car, so yeah I ride a bike.
After I got my drivers license I used my mom's car for lots of things, but since I moved out I don't have access to a car anymore. It is kind of liberating to be back on my bike again. The 15 minute ride to the gym took some getting used to again, but other than that it has been great.

Thanks! When I managed 152 miles last year I thought 200 might be possible with a bit more daylight (so tried it on the longest day of the year). Now that I have managed a double century I don't really feel inclined for any longer distance. It will also be nice to get my weekends back!

You are right it was more a test of willpower then being in good shape or not. I almost quit (and postponed my PR attempt a week or two) twice: at mile 94 when it started raining on me - and checking the forecast I realized it had changed from partly sunny all day to 40%-60% rain the rest of the day! And mile 125 when both my Garmin cyclometer and phone (running strava) had died. Would the ride really count if I could not even track it?? Both times I kept going mainly because (as I kept reminding myself) I said I was going to do 202 miles so I was darn sure going to do 202 miles!!0 -

Haha that's seriously badass. I feel any one of those factors would have done me in. Especially the dead batteries. If I can't log it then it was all for nothing! (well, not really) I can totally relate to the dead batteries though because it's happened to me a few times (bad battery-low lifespan) and I was furious. Now I carry an extra battery with me.
Interesting fact here is with mapmyride (and maybe strava) if your phone powers off mid-ride and you switch out the battery (or recharge at home), when you power up and start the app, it's still recording your current ride which I think is pretty awesome. Aside from the minute or so downtime, I was able to carry on without any loss of data.
GPS drops for no good reason.... those kill me! (I had 2 drops yesterday and it tanked my ride. 1 mile was <10mph the next was 30> haha. When I got home I used the MMR route builder to recreate my ride so I could log the correct mileage and check my average MPH).0 -

Both times I kept going mainly because (as I kept reminding myself) I said I was going to do 202 miles so I was darn sure going to do 202 miles!!
Haha that's seriously badass. I feel any one of those factors would have done me in. Especially the dead batteries. If I can't log it then it was all for nothing! (well, not really) I can totally relate to the dead batteries though because it's happened to me a few times (bad battery-low lifespan) and I was furious. Now I carry an extra battery with me.
Interesting fact here is with mapmyride (and maybe strava) if your phone powers off mid-ride and you switch out the battery (or recharge at home), when you power up and start the app, it's still recording your current ride which I think is pretty awesome. Aside from the minute or so downtime, I was able to carry on without any loss of data.
GPS drops for no good reason.... those kill me! (I had 2 drops yesterday and it tanked my ride. 1 mile was <10mph the next was 30> haha. When I got home I used the MMR route builder to recreate my ride so I could log the correct mileage and check my average MPH).
With the Garmin dieing it meant even if I was able to track the rest of the ride with my phone it would be listed as two shorter rides (which takes most of the fun out of the upload!). I knew what my total distance and average speed was when things died though so I went old school and, knowing the route mileage, tracked the rest of my moving time with my wristwatch! I knew I still wear that old thing for a reason... lol0 -
Finally finished my city commuter bike rehab project today by installing a new BB, crank, and saddle at an awesome shop that had some public workstations and lots of tools in the back. I started with a $170 30lb pig walmart bike (GMC denali), and ended the journey with a very rideable 26lb pig with another $250 of lipstick (specifically Shimano R501 wheels w. lithion 2 tires & 7-speed cassette, shimano tourney triple crank, new sealed UN55 68x113 bottom bracket, new grip tape, new brake pads, lighter seat). If I want to shell out another $230 I can drop the bike down another 4lb, but I'm not sure it'll be worth the time as it'll require new carbon fiber fork, shifters, handlebar, headset, and cassette. I have my carbon fiber ultegra bike anyhow for races, etc.. as this is just my city commuter.
I definitely understand that for $430 up front, I could have bought a 23lb bike on bikesdirect with better shifting and components (although the wheels/tires are pretty awesome), but the educational process so far has been very valuable, and some of the parts (brake pads, tires, wheels) are replacements for worn out parts that need to be replaced after 2 years/2500 miles of riding, and I still have my 700x32 wheels/tires/freewheel to swap in for trails.

Did 37 miles today so I miiiight just reach my goal. Just gotta average 19 miles a day for the next 6 days. My commute is 20 round trip so it shouldn't be an issue.
