40 year old working mom with 40lbs to lose... anyone else?

I am a busy mom of two with a full-time job, shift-working husband and am looking for buddies who have a similar story.
I've read so many success stories on this site and want to be one of them but need a little support and external motivation to help get me there. I'm worth it, I know I'm worth it, my problem is not wanting to, my problem is knowing where to begin and finding a groove. I don't have a plan yet and am still open to finding what works.
I'm not looking for the, "you just have to make up your mind and do it" kind of advice. That just depresses me even more. My mind is made up and I do want to do this, I'm looking for buddies in the same boat willing to give and receive support to get started and help each other keep a momentum going.

If you want me, I'm in.... I gained about 24 lbs and hate it.... Single mom of one.... Not sure how I lost it so nicely the first time... Have no time or energy now.... Good luck to you and to me0

Feel free to add me. I am trying to regain a healthy lifestyle food-wise. I have one son and my husband often works long hours. It can be tough, but I'm focused on mini weekly goals.0

So you want more supportive friends rather than ones who will explain how it works? Part of it really is mental and it will make it much easier for you if you equip ypurself with the relevant knowledge. Its straightforward and you can do it if you fin a way to deliver consistent deficits. Good luck.
Begin at the beginning.

Thanks! I totally hear you on not knowing how you did it the first time. I managed to lose all of my baby weight and keep it off for years after my kids were born... And then between stress at work and the demands of the kids and their schedules, life seemed to grab me by the scruff of my neck and has been dragging me along behind it ever since. I've gained nearly 40 lbs in the last few years, I lost control of my eating habits, my emotions and my willpower and I want it back!0 -
@ Barbara, Tricia and Scarlet, thank you for taking time to respond ladies. I look forward to getting to know you, supporting each other and losing weight together!0

I'm in the same boat. I lost 70 lbs and gained 25. I got too relaxed0

I'm 48 and need to lose 35lbs at least so feel free to add me0

Wow! I love the responses. Is anyone interested in staying on this thread (or creating a new one) to check I with each other and see where we are and how we're doing from time to time?0

So... For those of you with busy working lives also juggling families, how do you do it? When are you exercising? Are you pre-planning and preparing foods in advance to keep on track? I'd love to share some secrets as to what you are finding works for you.0

I fit in a run a few mornings per week. That will change to evenings as I go back to work in August. I also work in some light strength training, too.0
-
Do you workout at home or are you able to get to a gym?0
-
I'm 47yrs and a full time working mum. I have lost 40lb and hit my target a few weeks back. It's totally doable if I can do it! I haven't used a gym and just try to hit 10K steps in a day for exercise but after the summer vacation intend doing weights at home. I have a dog and take long walks when my daughter is in bed as well as trying to walk as much as possible in the day. My weightloss has come from counting calories and making sure I have a pack up at work and not going to the cafe during the day. Recently I realised that if I concentrate on high protein foods, I have less hunger which made eating at a deficit much easier...shame it was when I was almost at my target weight!0

Well if you work shift work it should be easy to hit the gym during quiet periods ...find something you enjoy doing and start doing it
There's no motivation that can come from outside, but once you start weighing and logging your foods (accurately) and force yourself to do it, and do it again it does become a habit them it becomes a way of life
It's about the food intake first
Then it's about the getting more active ...my fitbit zip helps me there ..and yes I eat back all the calories
Then it's about body sculpting and you can't beat a good progressive resistance (heavy weight) based programme
48, mum of two, work, lost 56lbs, been in maintenance since February ...0 -
Congrats on reaching your goal bubaluboo! When did you reach it and how long did it take you?0

Congrats on your weight loss. I don't do shift work, my husband does... I am the one at home with the kids when they are home evenings and weekends, and at work when they are at school so there really isn't any such thing as quiet time for me at home. I go to bed when they go to bed and now they are getting to an age where sometimes they outlast me! I have a stressful job and need my sleep0 -
Thank you! I started losing weight in Jan 2014 and lost 39lb in about 6 months and maintained until I took 3 weeks holiday and gained back 6lb. From then I never got back to counting and slowly gained back 14b in total. I took control again May this year and have lost 15lb since then. It's now vacation time again and I'm determined to not slip back into old habits. I feel more empowered this time as I know my weakness and really want to start lifting and gaining muscle after the holiday.0

I'm a 37yo mom with a lot to lose. I work full-time plus some. I go to the gym every weekday and rarely miss. I go after work in the evening. (I find if I go in the morning I am starving all day long haha.) If I didn't go every day I would never go. I work out for stress release not necessarily for weight loss however I'm at the point I know I have some decent muscles built up I just can't see them! Plus I have the exercise piece well-established in my routine and maybe it's time to add the food piece.0

How old are your kids...in started leaving mine alone in the house for an hour to 90 mins when they were 13 and 100
-
Good for you bubaluboo! I wish I had been smart enough to catch myself and get back on track before too much damage was done but I didn't. After my kids were born, I lost about 34 lbs and kept it off for a few years. Then, I started struggling with some digestive issues and the weight started to creep back on. I let my lapse turn into a collapse and now I'm even further away from my goal than I was the first time around with about 40lbs to lose. I know I can do it, I just have to let go of that feeling of failure from last time and believe I can do it again.0

Hi Christie,
My name is Sue. i am 41 and busy single mom of 14years old twins. I have gained 50 pounds in 3 years and i have tried many diets and fitness programs this last year but nothing really fits me or my crazy schedule.
i would like to join the group and be able to work together to achieve our health goals.
this morning i opened a blank excel page and wrote:
- commitments to myself
- my plan to achieve my goals
- i am going to take a picture of me in bikini (not looking forward to it but i have to face the reality!!)
- i am starting to put list of food i like to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner and favorite snacks with calories/protein/carb/fat content to try to build up menus around 1600 calories daily.
working on it
talk soon
Sue0 -
What a great way to begin Sue! You're brave! I'm afraid seeing a photo of myself in a bikini would send me spiralling into depression instead of motivate me to exercise.

Hi,
I am 40 and have two kids, but one is already in college and not living with us, so technically only one left... My husband travels a lot, often gone for weeks. I work full-time (actually typically more than 40 hours per week), typically 8-5:30. I was 175 lbs in February and needed to lose about 40 lbs, so I am pretty much your twin - feel free to friend me
I was 138 lbs as of yesterday, still need to lose 3-6 lbs, which, I think, will take me about two months.
I like cooking and usually prepare meals on the weekend. Here is an interesting link with some useful tips:
http://www.swimbikemom.com/2015/07/if-only-i-had-more-time-a-new-post-from-meredith-vieceli.html
As far as exercising goes, I run three times a week, preparing for half-marathon in September. Back in February I could not run at all, so started a c25k program, and did a 5k run in May. Continued running and did my 10k in June. Now I am addicted, do short runs (3-4 miles, which is 30-45 min) on the weekdays before work (usually at 5:30), and a long run on the weekend. This takes 1-1.5 hours, and I usually do it in the morning before it gets too hot, and the rest of the family is still asleep. I also swim once a week after work - take my son with me and we spend an hour or so. Finally, I signed up for some abs/core/barre classes and do them after work twice a week.

Hi. I'm 41. Need to lose about 35-40 lbs of fat. I work high stress job more than 50 hrs a week, I was in pretty good shape when in started this job 3 years ago but since then the weight has just attached itself to my belly and not moved. My husband does a version of shift work and our second kid just moved out of the home... so childless, I guess??
I came to the boards today for the first time looking for ideas. I can do ok on the food it's the exercise I can't seem to get into my schedule. I'm NOT a morning person and by the end of the day I have no energy or motivation to do anything at all. I would love some friends in this area. Of course I'll take advice and tips in all areas, one more potluck at work i may scream!0 -
You're singing my song Spunkkygirl! I do ok with eating and it not that I don't want to exercise, it's finding a groove where I can be consistent enough to be effective that has been the challenge. Sometimes my days are too crazy to squeeze it in at night and sometimes my mornings are already so early that it's not realistic to get up earlier for exercise. It's the inconsistency that makes it easy to fall off the wagon... That's where I'm hoping the support from this board will help keep me accountable.0

Welcome! You'll love MFP! Add me as a friend if you want. I'm a mom of 4 and down 45lbs!0
