Congratulations. That mountain you thought you saw before you, was nothing more than a pile of sand. Now that you have taken the initiative to walk over that pile of sand, you realize that you really do have the courage to achieve your goals.

YAY! I know it can be hard to get started, but it's great that you did. When I started in March, I felt super judged. I was 270 lbs. I would stop jogging every time I saw a car or a bicycle or thought there might be a person hiding in the bushes laughing at me. I knew I was heavy. I knew I jiggled. I knew my *kitten* was huge. Nothing new to me. I've lost just over 50 lbs. so far (I think I hit my first plateau, because usually my weight goes down a little each day, and now it's stayed about the same for the last 5 days or so... I look at it as a victory though, cause it means my body is happy with the changes I've made) and now, I don't care if someone sees me jogging, because my weight loss is for me, not for them.
Often, when people see me out exercising now, they'll smile, wave to me, talk to me about their days.. It's actually really encouraging.0 -

Walk a way there is less traffic you'll be more at ease I think. Indoor walking is good too when it's just to darn hot or cold out!0

I used to run quite a bit. I miss it. I will get there once I get my stamina back up some but I'm happy for just starting0 -

I normally run/walk/bike in late evenings 9pm-11pm I have never ran during the day I could only imagine how I'm viewed to people walking down my street. I'm 5ft 6in and now 218 lbs and I have the daily strggle. When I first started I did in home workouts.0

I don't know if they have one near you, but Planet Fitness is where I go. There is always a wide range of people at all different levels of fitness, The most comfortable place I've ever been.

Good for you OP! I sometimes still feel this way but it turns out that at the Y and on the lake trail where I walk there are all shapes and sizes and kinds of people out there for all kind of reason, most of which I will never know. When I see old people plodding along I think good for them for staying active. When I see young moms pushing teeny babies in their little joggers still with a little baby belly I think oh that was me 16 years ago and good for them for getting out. When I see amazingly fit people I think wow--that took a lot of work-good for them. When I see bigger folks I think yippee they are trying to be healthy like me! I am NOT trying to say everyone IS looking at you and judging you--just the opposite--I think all of us who are out moving our bodies in whatever way at whatever skill level we are share a goal--to be healthy. And we seem to be a friendly supportive bunch! Be so proud of every day that you are active!!!!! That is what matters!!!0

I logged in today specifically to find out how you did and was so glad to read this!!!! I am elated to read that you feel amazing! I still sometimes don't really want to exercise, but then do it anyway and afterward I am so glad I did.

Aww thank you! I almost caved on eating out but stuck to my guns. I feel that my goal (even though it is fair away) is obtainable.0 -
This makes me so sad because it reminds me how I used to be so terrified to the point where I couldn’t’ even leave my house let alone walk into a gym... but I started small, a 10 minute walk outside around the block and then I built it up from there.
6 years later and I'm still making steps to not be afraid anymore.. I've only just started using the male room at the gym!
But I go to the gym 5 days a week, I'm So Thankful that I made the decision all those years ago to just start.
it's horrible, it's uncomfortable and its hard but you will get stronger, It will get easier and you will survive.. and most of all you will build that confidence that has been holding you back all these years.

Just get out & do it! I had started a few years ago riding my bike, was totally embarrassed about my fat butt being on show but soon got over it Esp when i started toning up!0

I felt that way too, until I realised I always mentally cheered on anyone I saw walking/jogging/running/staggering down the road. Now I keep in mind that I may not look like an elite athlete but hey...I'm lapping everyone who stays sitting on the couch !!0

I know how mortifying it can be but the reality is not what you're seeing. Think about it this way. Tomorrow, those people won't even remember they saw you. Not only that, chances are they were not even paying attention to you in the first place, despite your intense feelings of judgement being cast upon you. It's 100% in your head. Don't let YOUR perception of someone else's thoughts keep you from living and enjoying your life. In the end what bearing do they have on your life anyway? You're working toward something. Remember that. Keep your goal on your mind and move past the negative perceptions.0

Woo Hoo! You've got this. I did the same thing, little by little, when I first started and it feels amazing when one day you are doing way more than you thought you could do at first. The first time ran for 20 minutes in a row I actually started crying. I couldn't believe I would ever be a runner.
When we start we think we're the only ones who are at the beginning, but everyone had to start somewhere. For example, here's a cool blog about a woman who couldn't even run enough to teach her son how to ride a bike and now she runs marathons:

When I see someone working out I only think good things about them. They're working on changing themselves for the better and that's worthy of respect. It doesn't matter what size they are! Be proud of your efforts!
However, if you really really don't like it and it inhibits your workout or stops you from even starting it, then there are plenty of exercises you can do at home. Check out Youtube. Or even just put something good on TV and walk in place, it burns quite a lot of calories if you lose track of time with a good movie/show0 -
I totally understand. And you know what? I still feel that way. I have to fight it every single time I go work out outside of the house, but I do it. The truth is, most people aren't even going to notice you out. If they do, the worst they'll say is, "Hello". Still, I know that anxiety all too well. It does get easier, I promise! Just tell yourself you can make it on a super quick walk to the end of the block and back. Each time, try to go a little farther. You got this.0

Oh my gosh, this was so me a few years ago. Let me tell you; when I started this weight loss journey I was EXACTLY like you. I hated my body (still do sometimes), hated the way I looked, wore 2X when I should have probably gone up to 3X, and made excuses because I was in denial. I knew I was overweight (still am) but was just afraid of everything. Afraid of change, afraid of what others would think, etc.
Find your motivation; for me, it's techno/dubstep music and my trusty fitbit. For you it might be a HR monitor, new shoes, new clothes, whatever. I'm also in nursing school, so that's motivation too. I have to practice what I preach after all.
When I started 2 years ago, I was around 275. I'm 202 right now, and I was 195 at my lowest. My goal is in the 120-130 range. You can do this, just make your goals and find what motivates you!0 -
Trust me don't worry about those people that are walking by, most the time they'll probably comfort you.
e.g. i'm not the slimmest and i wear a hijab but i still go to the park and jog, squat etc. Yes i feel uncomfortable but people are always supportive. Smile back and just stay positive!! it'll be worth it0 -

i started out with about that to lose- i only have 40 pounds left now. It's embarrassing in the beginning but next thing you know, it's not. Just do it, just start walking. Throw on some headphones and you won't even notice the people around you.0
