so i had a baby (our second) which required a c-section, i wasnt used to this because with my first i breast fed which helped in loosing all the baby weight and then some, but due to stress in life i've shot up to my highest point and it seems like no matter what i do my weight that i do seem to loose just wont stay off, so i went to my dr and was prescribed phentermine, and put onto an 800/day calorie diet, its been easy, staying within that, to be honest its been hard to get close to the 800 (634 i think has been my highest intake) until today, im so mad at myself, i ordered pizza and some stuffed bread and ate 3 pieces of pizza on top of the 3 things of the cheese bread. this is starting to be harder than i thought it would be! has anyone else been put on a similar dieat?

You should call the doctor up and ask for a referral to a dietitian. It would be wrong for us to second-guess your doctor's plan, but you're obviously having trouble sticking with it and aren't going about it in the healthiest manner.
Get that referral. Call today.0 -
Are you breast feeding your new baby? A real MD prescribed that diet?0
-
Seems verrrry questionable.0
-
the pizza no wasnt healthy, i was given a sample meal plan along with a paper that has everythings calorie amount on it as not to go past the 800/cal i was put on, the lack of an appetite is what makes 800 hard to acheive

no im not breast feeding due to my cs i wasnt able to. and yes an MD did he runs the weight loss office in our town he does the phen. HCG and one other thing0
-
NOT breastfeeding this time around.
800 calories a day is a VLCD diet and must be closely supervised by a medical professional.
It is not unusual at all to have a binge session following days of VLCD. Don't feel bad and one day of bingeing will not sabotage your efforts so far.
With all that said, you are not getting the close supervision you need. If I were you I'd ditch the appetite suppressant and start eating a reasonable amount of food every day.0 -

Is this doctor in the US? If so, I recommend reporting him to the medical board and letting them investigate him.0 -
Honestly - I'd find a new doctor pronto...or at the very least stop taking nutritional advice from him/her and see a registered dietician for my nutritional needs.0
-
I think someone else asked but are you breastfeeding? How long since you had the baby? You mentioned your weight shot up and you were frustrated, but how long did you try to lose, and what methods did you try? Did you try using MFP with setting a reasonable deficit, logging accurately, etc?
I really don't know much about phenteramine but I know there have been several threads about it with people discussing side effects and their experiences (mostly negative from what I recall). You could search the forums for some of those posts.
What I do know is that having a baby is a big adjustment, even if it isn't your first. There are hormonal changes, and you mentioned other stress, and for me personally, I wouldn't want to start a new medication looking for dramatic changes during an already stressful time. I would want to focus on getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated (especially if I'm nursing my baby) and trying to make sure I had enough energy to enjoy time with my kids and spouse. I especially wouldn't want to do something where I felt guilty if I ate pizza or exceeded 800 cals, that is a VLCD and I know your doctor prescribed it, but still, that is pretty extreme.0 -
yes it is in the US and hes been certified for this stuff.0
-
So I know phentermine is FDA approved as an appetite suppressant but HCG is NOT - and if you are saying your doctor specializes in that, then I agree with those above who advised you to not only get a second opinion but consider reporting him.
Also, I'm not sure why you couldn't breastfeed because of a c-section? It's probably too late for that but I had a c-section with my second and was able to nurse - unless there were some other medical complications that I'm not aware of.

as far as the breastfeeding goes she was taken a week early because of A. her size (born 10.9 lbs) and B. she was breech and we werent about to risk a version procedure with them already estimating her weight at 8.5lbs at 37 weeks. so my milk didnt come in on time, leading to us having to supplement, drs. in this town are not pro-BF so they had told me that if she continued to loose weight she would be put into the hospital until she gained (she had lost 10% her first week) so in a way not to have to see my baby hospitalized and have an IV put in (the way they described the process scared me enough) we had to do formula, im mad now because after talking to home town drs the weight loss wasnt as concerning or alarming as it was made out to be

Run away from this quack as quickly as you can. Just because he has MD after his name doesn't mean he knows what he's doing. Even the lowest ranked doctor in the graduating class still gets to call themselves an MD.0

In that case, definitely report him, as what he is doing (hcg, specifically) is illegal.0 -
Now I'm starting to dislike all the doctors in your adopted town. I am sure your little one will be just fine though.0

According to my doctor you should Never Ever go below 1000 calories a day even on phentermine. I'd look for a new doctor!0

My understanding was that hCG is not approved to be labelled as a weight loss drug but it is legal for doctor's to prescribe a drug for an off label use. Not saying he is correct in doing so but my understanding was it isn't illegal. Now I'm starting to dislike all the doctors in your adopted town. I am sure your little one will be just fine though.

HCG information form mayo clinic: http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/weight-loss/expert-answers/hcg-diet/faq-20058164
According to the FDA: it sounds like OTC HCG is illegal. It sounds like it can still be prescribed but is a classed as a controlled substance. http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm281333.htm
Personally, it wouldn't hurt to seek out a second opinion.0 -

Ok, well like I said, it is too late for that, and it is disappointing that you didn't have the opportunity to breast feed if that was something you wanted to do. Not that everyone needs to do that, I just think that if someone would like to do that, they should be given every opportunity to be able to do that for their child. Anyway, I digress...
It sounds like your baby is still very young. Why are you so concerned about your weight gain that you are already taking drastic measures? What's the rush? And why is your husband considering taking HCG?
HCG is not FDA approved as a weight loss tool. Google "HCG Horror Stories" and you will find a plethora of posts from people who tried it, seduced by the idea of rapid weight loss, only to find out that they had dramatic side effects, gained all the weight back and then some, and had challenges losing weight using traditional methods from then on.
As I said earlier, why not just take some time to let your body recover from the pregnancy and child birth, focus on getting into a routine with two kids (which is a whole new set of challenges) and try to use basic principles of CI<CO for weight loss?

So much wrong here... Dreadful lack of support by doctors in your town for breastfeeding. All of those are not any reasons to stop breastfeeding. Losing 10% of weight as a newborn is completely normal and expected. Milk typically doesn't come in until 48 to 72 hours after birth with baby at breast every 2 hours.
Anyways it is water under the bridge now and I am sure your little one is either way. It does make me wonder about your current doctor. Please be careful! How old is your little one now?0 -
Please go easy on yourself. Like others have said, a new baby is its own special set of stresses. It's a happy time but often marked by a grievous lack of sleep, lots of crying (not just baby), attention to the first born, running the household, navigating relationship w/ husband and extended family, etc. etc.
Weight loss added to that? Why??? I say put the brakes on any diet and just enjoy this time with your baby. When you're feeling grounded again, then you can start thinking about a simple calorie deficit.0 -

Yeah, chiming in on what sounds like a questionable doctor. If you're on a VLCD, you should be closely monitored with things like weekly checkups and blood tests to make sure you're getting the nutrition your body needs. Also, something like that should be a limited time frame, and then afterwards you slowly introduce solid foods back and the doctor helps you relearn eating habits to support it. If I were you, I'd go get a second opinion just to see what they say. And if you go to a nutritionist, make sure their qualifications and certifications are good. I honestly can't tell you what to look for, but I know there are some that either aren't licensed as nutritionists or have minimal certification. I think requirements depend on what state you're in, but not sure of the details.0

HCG is illegal in over the counter weight loss products.
http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm281333.htm
HCG is legally prescribed for fertility treatments and treatment for adolescent males to stimulate puberty. Not for weight loss. It is normally administered by injection.

What sort of job does your husband have that a prescribed legal weight loss drug like phentermine would be a problem in a drug test?0
