I recently did a sugar detox. A few weeks later I had a Cokezero. It was a hot day and I thought "Sure why not".
Within a couple hours I noticed for the first time in weeks I had a massive sugar craving. I went out and bought ice cream, cookies and binged like I hadn't in months.
I have the same reactions to diet soda. I crave carbs all day when I drink one. I also lost 9lbs my first week trying to lose. All I did was stop drinking DIET soda. It was keeping so much water on me. I was drinking between 52-104oz a day.
My wife was also addicted to diet coke, and was having massive headaches. A scan showed she was having brain bleeds. Doc got her off diet soda and they went away. She won't touch the stuff now.
My current doc is always lecturing me about diet sodas, and that has helped me dump them AGAIN. Even months off the stuff, I can have just one, and I'm back on the band wagon, sometimes for weeks. I swear them off now. I just can't handle them.
Two of the components of aspartame separate and convert into neurotoxins when they reach 86 degrees F (in the body). Also regular usage of art sweeteners convert the gut bacteria and much of the healthy flora dies off. The new flora is supposed to aggravate inflammation, which in turn can be root cause of many chronic diseases.
Carbonation acidifies the blood weakening the immune system, bone structure and hardening arteries.
I just swear them off, now.
I've been able to replace with water and unsweet teas from home. Taste can take time to acquire, but I actually enjoy my mixes now.

Aspartame fearmongering now? The science doesn't support the scare tactic. In fact, studies designed to find a way to label aspartame as toxic keep failing to find a reason to.
What's next ... Mercola?

How about the fact the Coca Cola is a horrible company? Google it (most large companies are). Also they're behind a 'study' saying it's not what you eat that makes you fat, it's lack of exercise.0

Truth!
Though I'm pretty sure battery acid would taste better than Diet Coke. It's awful.
I need to try some of that Diet A & W everyone's raving about.

I actually just STARTED to drink diet sodas so I'm no help. Just tell her 2 liters is too much.
That diet root beer is amazing with smirnoff toasted marshmallow vodka
DANG
Oh, that sounds lovely!
The only reason I'm trying to cut back on diet sodas is calcium absorption and what the acidity might be doing to my teeth. Too much Sucralose (Splenda) does seem to give me a sore throat and possibly some digestive issues. But I was consuming a huge amount of it with those little Mio water flavor enhancers...
I have noticed if I cut back on sweeteners other foods taste more sweet.

They say soda, sucks out the calcium out of your bones.
But here is a kicker.
There is a reason why during sports events, they have water/Gatorade to the athletes
Have you every tried to give a plant soda instead of Water?
Have you talk to a dentist on the potential damage to teeth?

You don't need the salt and sweeteners. It's expensive. It gets you hooked on caffeine.
And as others said, Diet Pepsi is much better. If I went back to pop, it would be Diet Pepsi. In a pinch, I'd be a Pepper.0 -

I learned that day that it's really true that your brain interprets artificial sugar just as it would regular sugar. I honestly felt like a drug addict going through withdrawal after that sugar rush.
The big problem that no one is talking about is sugar addiction. Even though diet soda is "calorie free", it still brings you right back to your old ways of strong sugar cravings, making eating healthy very very difficult.
Thank you! Nice to hear someone who actually put it to the test. I used to drink diet cordials every day, because (don't laugh) I can't stand the taste of water, even mineral water. Then I read how it can make you feel hungry, and I started to suspect it was doing that for me. So I switched to regular cordial (with sugar in it), and just tried to make my drinks as weak as possible. I felt that it worked - I wasn't feeling as hungry even though my diet hadn't changed. But I did wonder if it was just psychological.

It really depends on the event. It isn't uncommon for distance athletes to partake in a Coke during an event. Pay close attention to the Tour de France or read the accounts of Frank Shorter, marathon runner.

As for diet coke I'd tell your friend to switch to diet pepsi. It taste better! You can always google it and get a heap load of reasons they "say" diet drinks are bad. Also I am one of the people who lost nearly 100 pound and drink lots of diet soda every single day.
Oh that sounds good too! Lately I've been on Sprite Zero with Three Olives Cherry Vodka, it's a Dirty Shirley!0 -

How about diet coke is just disgusting? To each their own I guess.
Seriously, unless they want to quit, nothing you say will curtail their drinking it.

Yea, tons of endurance athletes can be seen drinking Coca-Cola like it's going out of style during their events.0 -

Also, while I have been known to drink some Gatorade during an athletic event, it was for the same reason I wouldn't normally touch the stuff -- I needed some calories along with my hydration. When I'm not spending multiple hours in an endurance event I'd just as soon not drink calories.
Often water is great, or sparkling water, or iced tea, but so is diet soda.0 -
You can't help them. They can only help themselves. Sugar is addicting and some people with addictive personalities can sometimes go through withdrawals when quitting so quickly. She can just stop and suffer through the withdrawal or ween off of it. I'd suggest electrolyte water if anything. You can buy GU and NUUN tabs that you can put into water bottles for $5 (you get 12 tabs roughly) to flavor the water if all else has failed0

You're not a plant. Try feeding a cat a vegan diet or a cow meat and see what happens (or rather don't, I don't want you to get in trouble because that ain't healthy for them).0 -
