Coffee instead of water??

I live in in mountain town, and it's gotten cold already. As such I've been drinking far more coffee, and consequently less water (sometimes none). The coffee is 1creamer/1splenda per so the calories are fine but otherwise..opinions?

Unless you make your coffee with something other than water, I think you'll be fine.0

Coffee (or caffeine) is a diuretic, so it will actually pull water out of your body, so you'll probably still want to drink water.0

Coffee is almost all water.0

My opinion is that coffee is the nectar of the gods.0

This.
I drink coffee all day everyday at work and it got to a point where I was doing this so often WITHOUT any water in between that I had to go to the doctor as I was quite badly dehydrated. I was told to drink water in between my coffee as coffee supposedly dehydrates. I've started doing that and I feel better. This is a personal experience and probably won't be the same for everyone - but in my opinion, it's good to incorporate some pure water too!0 -
Coffee is insufficiently diuretic to make any real difference. It's water. Treat it like water.0

Coffee doesn't dehydrate as much as most people think it does. The liquid content of the coffee far exceeds the mild dehydrating effect of the caffeine, unless you're drinking tons and tons of coffee.

How do you feel? Do you feel hydrated while drinking the coffee? If so, I'm not sure why you would have to avoid it.
If you want to drink less coffee, have you considered herbal teas? I also prefer hot beverages when it gets colder, so I'll often drink caffeine-free teas (along with black tea and coffee).0 -
I try limiting my coffee to only about two or three pots per day.0

Coffee is not so strong a diuretic to cancel out it's hydrating effects.

When I had trouble sleeping I stopped drinking tea (I hate coffee. The taste) after noon and my insomnia resolved itself.
Nothing quite so nice as hanging on to a warm mug on a cold day. Enjoy.0 -
The days I bring coffee to work, I don't drink as much water. If you aren't getting thirsty, then you are doing fine.0

All fluid, be it from drinks or food contribute to daily hydration needs.
Coffee and tea do not have a therapeutic diuretic effect.
There's a post on here titled something along the lines of 'unsweetened tea' that contains all the relevant information with multiple sources and citations.0 -
Hi. I do this and not on purpose. I only drink coffee and I end up badly dehydrated to where I get a kidney infection so make yourself drink water. If you feel your kidneys bother you or crampy you need to drink alot of water bc you are dehydrated. Dark urine and smelly urine are also signs to look for. Try doing tea? I have used this method to get in water before.0

This is my dilemma.
When I lived in Kansas, I knew people who drank their water hot in the winter.0 -
TMI: Not sure if there's any scientific evidence for it, but in my experience, a mild diuretic effect is NOT my main side effect from coffee. . . (where's that poop emoji?)0

I boil water and just drink hot water as I cant have caffeine after a certain time if I want to sleep. I live in canada so I understand the need to have something warm and I don't care for tea so water it is!0

My grandfather used to have a daily cup of hot water with a little wedge of fresh lemon.
...He lived 'til 96.

Here too, so for me, too much coffee leads to the above and with the mild diuretic effect I can become dehydrated so I stick to 18 ounces or less daily. This helps me to avoid the bad side effects and it doesn't impact my water intake that I've noticed (going by urine color, that is).0 -

I just wandered into this thread, so I'm sorry if this has already been mentioned. The amount of caffeine in a few cups of coffee does not have enough of a diuretic effect to "pull water out of your body" to the point of causing you to lose hydration. Coffee (and anything containing water) hydrates you just fine.
Drinks with a higher alcohol % will, however, have a diuretic effect, and it is necessary to hydrate regualarly while drinking alcohol.
Fun fact: water itself is also a diuretic.0 -

You weren't drinking enough fluids. It wasn't the coffee that caused you to dehydrate - it's just the fact that you didn't drink enough fluids combined throughout the day.
Tea is not any more or less hydrating than coffee (or water).0 -

I concur. Beer makes me pee a lot.

If you chew a couple coffee beans, and then drink a bottle of water, is it still water?0

I always wonder if it's really the alcohol content of the beer that makes me pee, or if it's the fact that I can drink ~36 oz or so in a relatively short amount of time.
I mean, if you have 3 beers in 3 hours, that's more than half of your fluid intake for the whole day. Of course you're going to pee a lot!0 -
