Like just holding my phone with one hand causes deep lines in my pinkie...( i would post a pic if i knew how) My sister in law had a 31 party today @4 and i ate some pretzels, thinking since I was able to pass some gas finally that my bowels are moving again. It was a big mistake, my stomach swelled up again, and I am now laying in my bed in some pain and nausea. I am trying to be positive, and hoping that the numbness is caused by the edema and nothing neurological. They put so much fluids in me during those 2 trips to the e.r, after not being able to drink much water or any food that i gained 10 lbs....so yesterday I made myself drink 84oz of water trying to get my body to release this extra water. I was feeling pretty good til the pretzels....but i hadnt ate all day.
I really am so grateful for all of your well wishes and thoughts and prayers. I have never had something like this happen, and you all make me realize the world and especially MFP is full of some pretty amazing people
I'd recommend going back to your Dr again ... or ER ... or do you have walk-in clinics where you are?0 -

So they diagnosed you with an issue that is essentially lack of bowel propulsion and sent you home with pain meds that can further slow your bowels down? Were you seen by a legitimate gastroenterologist while in the ER? You need to go to a different ER and be seen by a GI because at this point you're likely going to end up with impacted bowels and permanent damage.0 -

This isn't really making a whole lot of sense.
Either you've misunderstood something or they're exceedingly negligent.
I'm not slamming you. It's very easy for smart people to misunderstand stuff. So very easy, especially if nobody bothers to explain it well. Emergency rooms being busy places, they might've had to rush through the explanations, which is why the paperwork comes in handy.
I suggest that you call your regular doctor and go over what they told you and what the paperwork says. Ask him what you should do now.
I'm also confused by the situation at this point, as it seems you are in need of medical intervention & care from appropriate doctors. They shouldn't be sending you home without some relief.
Get yourself to the ER, bring your paperwork & your mother if possible (hopefully she can sit it & also hear Dr orders, and help advocate for you, etc).
I'm so sorry that you're experiencing all these complications, and continuing to pray for you. Take care if yourself --- doctor or ER immediately.

The words from the e.r. drs mouth were that they can only treat the symptoms in the e.r. My symptoms were a non functioning bowel with severe stomach pain due to trapped air in my small intestines. They offered to relieve that symptom but I chose not to go through that procedure as I don't want to be put under. They gave me valium (so i would "not care about the pain")and an anti nausea med the first time. The second time they gave me a med for stomach pain. The problem with Ileus is they can't force it to function, its a temporary (usually 3 to 4 day) issue, that resolves on its own. She advised me to return if I had vomiting, which I did not. I returned bc of the numbness in my extremeties. Which was scarier to me than my stomach issues. Over the past 2 days, I have lost 6lbs. All water. My edema is better, and my numbness was better today. I even rollerskated with my girl scout troop tonight. My legs are killing me, and I didnt eat much, but I am seeing and feeling progress. Last night I vomited, but I also had a small b.m. Which was a happy moment, bc my bowels are moving again. No b.m today, but I also havent ate more than a handful of pretzles over the last 4 days. I made breakfast for my kids this morning , and ate a piece of french toast had 2 scrambled eggs and 2 bacon. Didnt eat again for 8 hours. Drank water all day. I am scared to add protein back too quickly. I am calling my pcp tomorrow, and tell her what has been happening. I am so ready to be back to my old self, tonight i had a glimpse of feeling better.0

K. Take it slow. You are not out of the woods yet.0
-
Not to be disgusting but I would suggest a glycerin suppository. 1 or 2 and you will likely be going0

Can you get one of those colonoscopy things? Did the doctors say anything about that? Also, if I were you, I would definitely go to a different ER. I'm glad you will be seeing your own doctor though. Did you make the appointment for the specialist yet?0
-
I had a colonoscopy. One needs to purge the bowel first, which our dear OP can't do. I fear the purgative would do more damage.0

Try chewing gum. It can trigger peristalsis.0 -
Try Kiwi fruit, high in fibre and good diet foods. helps keep me regular. A good long walk helps too, ever noticed that dogs always go to the toilet whilst out on walks, something to do with movement in the hip area. Definitely worth a try.0

agreed, and i dont think you can just elect to have one done. I too have had one and it wasnt because i wanted it. i can do without EVER drinking that satly drink again.0 -
I have had the same for 6 months now and it finally got to the point where I had to go to the ER. And no, laxatives dont work.
On MY Drs advice, this is what I do:
Eat 1 banana every day
Eat 250g of plain fat free yoghurt every day
Drink 2 servings of Bebefibre fibre suppliment every day
Drink 4-5l of water every day
Pro-biotics every day.
I also stay away from anything with wheat in it.
It has not solved the problem but it has made it manageble as long as I dont deviate.\
Also I was told by GP to sit on the loo for 30 minutes every morning and every evening to "retrain" my gut. Apparently it gets lazy. Who knew.
I hope you get sorted.0 -
I shouyld have read the whole thread. I REALLY hope your bowels start working properly again.0

I think you need to go back to the ER. You were told to go back if you vomit. You vomited. This isn't something to hesitate with.
Keep in mind that the vomiting might be a symptom of something more serious, and that the bm doesn't necessarily negate that.0 -
Any updates, OP?0

My wife has issues, not as severe as what you are deacribing, and she has recently started taking a probiotic which has helped her.0
-

-

I have had at least 1 small bm e rryday, today i had 2. I am feeling like im going back to normal. I have a gnarly virus that has my throat all swollen so it made me ridiculously nauseous today But ibprofen and a hot bath helped. I worked out last night and ate protein and veggies yesterday.0
-
It sounds like you are slowly coming back. That was scary!0
-
This is getting to the dangerous stage. I don't want you to rupture anything. I think a doctor has to take you seriously.
@jgnatca...You always give such great advice. I thought you were overreacting at first but after reading more, you were spot on
OP, so glad you are feeling better!!

Whew! Now keep eating light and don't overload on fiber or protein until you're functioning normally.0
-
glad you are improving.
one suggestion i might make, which may have been made already-but I only read page 1 and 5, warmth. drinking warm drinks and a heating pad on low. or warm bath. warmth can help get things moving0 -
Never going to the e.r ever again....i apparently picked up strep which has now caused tonsillitis...which required a shot to reduce inflammation so my tonsils wouldnt cut off my airway... i have a fever and severe body aches....i just want to give up for the next few days...this is ridiculous enough! Uncle! Im on an antibiotic of 875mg of augmentin twice a day for 10 days

I don't know about you personally of course, but bananas never loosen things up for me, they actually bind me up; every time! They do it to my children too. As babies I only gave them bananas if they were "loose in the caboose". My husband reacts the same way and so do many of my friends. I heard an old adage once, "fruits with the letter "p" in them make you poop." prunes, apples, pears, peaches, etc. Personally all I need to do to get things going is eats some cooked greens. ie: collards, kale, Swiss chard, mustard greens, turnips greens. I am a southern girl and greens are easy. I used to cook them with bacon drippings but now just a touch of ham or beef soup base adds lots of flavor (and salt- be careful) without fat. I drizzle them with AC Vinegar too. Just some ideas... good luck!0

I had a bad case of strep in college and lost 14 pounds in a week with the steroid and augmenten they had me on. I completely lost my appetite. Not the best way to lose weight. I hope this episode is over soon! Hang in there0 -
Hopefully the antibiotics don't mess with your system further. Rest up, and I hope you feel better soon!0
-
Wow - you've been through a lot. Hoping by now you are seeing progress and getting some relief. I would agree that the antibiotics are likely to mess up your good bacteria. Augmentin will wipe out all bacteria, good or bad. While my sons were little, and even now, after an antibiotic, they get PB-8 on the inverse hours of the antibiotic. So if you took Augmentin at 12 am and 12 pm, take the PB-8 at 6 am and 6 pm. That way, you can replace some of the good bacteria. If you take the probiotic too closely to the time of the antibiotic, it just is wasting the probiotic by killing it off. PB-8 is a good product that has many different strains of helpful bacteria. Common probiotics usually contain 3 types. Unfortunately many doctors do not know about nutritional supplements and are less likely to recommend something that could help. Best wishes!0

Had to take a cousin to Nemours here at Orlando for this couple of days ago. The doctor said to drink close to 10-15 glasses of water and fruits especially 3-4 apples a day. To be on a liquid based diet of fruits and water for 3-5 days.0

Natural calm, start with half a teaspoon in the morning and half before bed. Add flax oil to your diet as well. If you google flax oil for constipation, they have charts that show how to work your way up. If you rely on the medical industry, they will just mask symptoms and never attack the root cause. I was told I would be on medication for the rest of my life for gastritis/acid reflux. After 5 years on it, I found natural methods and researched the root cause and got myself away from that. That was 3 1/2 years ago. Wish you the best
