Okay, the numbness is better, my legs are still going numb if i sit for more than 15 mins. The edema in my legs and hands is pretty terrible. Like just holding my phone with one hand causes deep lines in my pinkie...( i would post a pic if i knew how) My sister in law had a 31 party today @4 and i ate some pretzels, thinking since I was able to pass some gas finally that my bowels are moving again. It was a big mistake, my stomach swelled up again, and I am now laying in my bed in some pain and nausea. I am trying to be positive, and hoping that the numbness is caused by the edema and nothing neurological. They put so much fluids in me during those 2 trips to the e.r, after not being able to drink much water or any food that i gained 10 lbs....so yesterday I made myself drink 84oz of water trying to get my body to release this extra water. I was feeling pretty good til the pretzels....but i hadnt ate all day.

I really am so grateful for all of your well wishes and thoughts and prayers. I have never had something like this happen, and you all make me realize the world and especially MFP is full of some pretty amazing people :)

I'd recommend going back to your Dr again ... or ER ... or do you have walk-in clinics where you are?

I'm kind of surprised that they said your intestines aren't working at all and then told you to go home and not eat.

What does the paperwork say? Did you get a diagnosis or diagnoses and what were the printed instructions for them?

    Ileus was the diagnosis

So they diagnosed you with an issue that is essentially lack of bowel propulsion and sent you home with pain meds that can further slow your bowels down? Were you seen by a legitimate gastroenterologist while in the ER? You need to go to a different ER and be seen by a GI because at this point you're likely going to end up with impacted bowels and permanent damage.

This isn't really making a whole lot of sense.
Either you've misunderstood something or they're exceedingly negligent.
I'm not slamming you. It's very easy for smart people to misunderstand stuff. So very easy, especially if nobody bothers to explain it well. Emergency rooms being busy places, they might've had to rush through the explanations, which is why the paperwork comes in handy.

I suggest that you call your regular doctor and go over what they told you and what the paperwork says. Ask him what you should do now.

I'm also confused by the situation at this point, as it seems you are in need of medical intervention & care from appropriate doctors. They shouldn't be sending you home without some relief.
Get yourself to the ER, bring your paperwork & your mother if possible (hopefully she can sit it & also hear Dr orders, and help advocate for you, etc).
I'm so sorry that you're experiencing all these complications, and continuing to pray for you. Take care if yourself --- doctor or ER immediately.

The words from the e.r. drs mouth were that they can only treat the symptoms in the e.r. My symptoms were a non functioning bowel with severe stomach pain due to trapped air in my small intestines. They offered to relieve that symptom but I chose not to go through that procedure as I don't want to be put under. They gave me valium (so i would "not care about the pain")and an anti nausea med the first time. The second time they gave me a med for stomach pain. The problem with Ileus is they can't force it to function, its a temporary (usually 3 to 4 day) issue, that resolves on its own. She advised me to return if I had vomiting, which I did not. I returned bc of the numbness in my extremeties. Which was scarier to me than my stomach issues. Over the past 2 days, I have lost 6lbs. All water. My edema is better, and my numbness was better today. I even rollerskated with my girl scout troop tonight. My legs are killing me, and I didnt eat much, but I am seeing and feeling progress. Last night I vomited, but I also had a small b.m. Which was a happy moment, bc my bowels are moving again. No b.m today, but I also havent ate more than a handful of pretzles over the last 4 days. I made breakfast for my kids this morning , and ate a piece of french toast had 2 scrambled eggs and 2 bacon. Didnt eat again for 8 hours. Drank water all day. I am scared to add protein back too quickly. I am calling my pcp tomorrow, and tell her what has been happening. I am so ready to be back to my old self, tonight i had a glimpse of feeling better.

Can you get one of those colonoscopy things? Did the doctors say anything about that? Also, if I were you, I would definitely go to a different ER. I'm glad you will be seeing your own doctor though. Did you make the appointment for the specialist yet?

I had a colonoscopy. One needs to purge the bowel first, which our dear OP can't do. I fear the purgative would do more damage.

Try chewing gum. It can trigger peristalsis.

Try Kiwi fruit, high in fibre and good diet foods. helps keep me regular. A good long walk helps too, ever noticed that dogs always go to the toilet whilst out on walks, something to do with movement in the hip area. Definitely worth a try.

I have had the same for 6 months now and it finally got to the point where I had to go to the ER. And no, laxatives dont work.

On MY Drs advice, this is what I do:

    Eat 1 banana every day
Eat 250g of plain fat free yoghurt every day
Drink 2 servings of Bebefibre fibre suppliment every day
Drink 4-5l of water every day
    Pro-biotics every day.

I also stay away from anything with wheat in it.

It has not solved the problem but it has made it manageble as long as I dont deviate.\

Also I was told by GP to sit on the loo for 30 minutes every morning and every evening to "retrain" my gut. Apparently it gets lazy. Who knew.

    I hope you get sorted.

I think you need to go back to the ER. You were told to go back if you vomit. You vomited. This isn't something to hesitate with.

Keep in mind that the vomiting might be a symptom of something more serious, and that the bm doesn't necessarily negate that.

I have had at least 1 small bm e rryday, today i had 2. I am feeling like im going back to normal. I have a gnarly virus that has my throat all swollen so it made me ridiculously nauseous today :/ But ibprofen and a hot bath helped. I worked out last night and ate protein and veggies yesterday.
