I'll pre log to plan the day and to keep myself mindful of what I am eating.

Today I actually prelogged breakfast, football snacks, 2 gin and tonics watching football, my planned thanksgiving dinner that I am cooking with 2 glasses of wine. Yep, I am definitely a scooch over but I am swimming Friday, gonna enjoy my oldest son's favorite holiday snack treat, skip my youngest son's favorite pumpkin pie and am planning an extra early thanksgiving morning walk. Totally doable, and if I am over a few hundred calories I know it won't be the end of me for one day. This year rather than making my infamous homemade rolls I bought a small packet of family fav's so I don't have the leftovers.... only doing a half of my family recipe for Italian stuffing so I don't have leftovers.... I bought freezer containers to bundle up appropriate future portions of the dressing and Turkey for my boys. If I mess this up, it is not going to be due to lack of planning LOL

how can you mess up one day out of the year???

In the UK, We don't really celebrate thanksgiving - but christmas - I personally go HARD for. I won't be logging then. It's one day. It's fine.

Snap, also in the UK. I usually have a day off logging on Xmas day. Once I logged and I had 2600 calories, which is only 300 above my TDEE. I usually go for walk anyway, plus I have 3 young kids so not many opportunities to sit on my fat mince-pie filled *kitten* lol.

I want to enjoy the day with my family, not stress about weighing my turkey! On Boxing Day we usually go to my husband's aunt's house and have a buffet of Thai curry. I did do a 5K run last year first though!

    Why wouldn't one log everything?

because it is probably impossible to be accurate on Thanksgiving...

So what? Being "accurate" is far less important to me than paying attention. My risk is eating just out of habit.

I log everything without being obsessive about accuracy and it works for me. Of course I started with over 200 pounds to lose so accuracy has been less important than just getting some level of control.

I plan to log what I "think" the calories are because I'll be using others homemade entries. My mom is cooking so it's impossible to log correctly and I won't have access to a scale either. I will overestimate to be safe. So far I've pre logged 2,600 calories. ed5wxjc6afib.jpeg

I remember someone logging over 6,000 Calories on Thanksgiving. I'm still in the middle of pre-logging. I never knew I would say this, but I don't know what vegetables I want to supplement with the green beans and corn we'll be having (I might have a box of frozen honey glazed carrots, a crapton of broccoli, or I could saute some spinach with feta). Honestly, I'm more excited about the turkey and vegetables instead of the stuffing/potatoes/pumpkin pie/bread. :open_mouth:

it is one day out of 365 ….pretty hard to sabotage your whole weight loss life style change in one day …actually it is 100% impossible.

so inaccurate logging is OK, as long as you "log it all in"…?

I would rather be accurate 75 to 85% of the time and have my 15% of the time when I do not have to be so obsessive about logging….

Yes, I will log. I am doing the cooking so I think it will be doable. The challenge will be how to log all of the "tasting" that will go on during prep.

You really really like Bailey's don't you?

    Point??

Except, that's Bailey's creamer. Try the real thing. Go to your neighborhood liquor outlet and buy a bottle of REAL Bailey's Irish Cream. Invite it along to your Thanksgiving gathering.

Mmmm, now there's a cup of coffee that I could appreciate.

I'll log it all, but not worry about the calorie count. I'll log over estimates when I can't be exact.

Just want to keep the habit going.

I log everyday regardless, keeps my honest.

    Yeh. That.
Besides, although you can't weigh and micro-manage every morsel you put in your mouth over the holiday, If you've been weighing and marking everything you eat for a while, you should be able to approximate what you are eating. Yeh, you'll probably be a few hundred calories off... and the desserts will totally blow your diet out of the water... It will at least keep you mindful of what you are eating and help you to stay aware of your end goals while you are communing with friends and family.

HOWEVER... Don't stress over it too much when, at the end of the day, you discover that, rather than, say, 1200 calories, you took in 6,000! Sure it'll look like a setback and you might even be depressed over it. But it is not going to sabotage your previous efforts to the point that you experience some major setback. You just accept that, some (special and infrequent) days, you may overeat or under-exercise. You are going to have upward fluctuations every now and then. Just accept that ...it happens. Then go right back to your regularly scheduled program of diet and exercise and let it go.

nope. am i having anxiety about the effects of the day? a little bit since in the past the holidays have really derailed me. but you know what - i'm more concerned with spending time with my family and enjoying the day (not DAYS). instead i'm going to lift in the morning, eat lightly before and then make good choices when it comes to portion size while still enjoying a little bit of everything.

I'm planning on consuming 4000 calories. My dad makes these mashed potatoes with tons of butter, cream cheese and sour cream. I'm super excited.

I do - since I don't want to be a complete weirdo and bring a food scale to the dinner table, a lot of it is estimation. Since we have the same general foods every year, I just copy last Thanksgiving forward, and adjust for the dessert and alcohol variations

Nope. I didn't gain weight because of too much good food and drink on the occasional holiday. I gained weight because of lots of bad daily habits. I'll just enjoy the holiday mindfully.

That said, if I find that I struggle and it derails me from my routine, then I may reconsider my approach for future holidays/special occasions. Hope not.

Balance and enjoy, cheers to all.

I haven't decided. I might log, or I might not. The one thing I will definitely do is to stop eating when I feel full, and go brush and floss.

Thanksgiving is one of the few days a year that I don't give a damn how much I eat! I'll log the food, and if it happens to be 4000 calories, then so be it. Going all out a few times a year will not hurt!

I log every day. It has no bearing on how much I eat. I'll eat what I want on Thanksgiving, and I'll use the information in my spreadsheets to monitor TDEE.

I'm going to log a rough estimate. My family generally has the same thing every year. And everyone is pretty good about sharing recipes if they bring something new.

Real talk, I'm mostly doing it to keep my streak going.

I'm with @ndj1979 My Mother and Mother in Law are doing all the cooking, and neither of them is even aware how a measuring cup works. Whatever I log will be horribly inaccurate anyway, so I'm just logging in to MFP to say hey and keep up my log in streak:)

I really think developing a healthy relationship with food is going to have to include realizing I can't always control the variables, like when other people cook. So I just focus on keeping my logging as absolutely flawless as possible when I can, so I can relax during those times when I can't.

The only celebrations this time of year are my bday and xmas. I'm not much of an xmas person so that will be pretty easy for me, but on my bday in about 2 weeks I'm planning to go all-out... o:) I'll log it though and try not to feel guilty about it.

I'm not going to bother. I don't see any point to it. I'd rather just enjoy the holiday, and pay the piper next week.

I might log for fun just to see how much I can take in lol. Not worried about the calorie count, but might do it out of curiosity. It's a day where you should definitely relax, live life, and enjoy yourself a little without stressing.

This is my third Thanksgiving since starting MFP. The first year I wasn't sure if I should log or not, wasn't sure what impact the day would have on my results, etc. I went ahead and logged, and you know what, it wasn't that bad - I was over my calories but by less than 1000, and I still had a loss that week.

We celebrate on Thursday with my husband's family and on Saturday with my family - so I have two Thanksgiving meals to account for, plus one at work as well. I like logging my calories, and since the meals are essentially the same from year to year, I can pretty much estimate what my total consumption will be (b/w 1800-2200 for the meal including dessert and alcohol). My maintenance calories are around 2300, so as long as I don't over do it the rest of the day/week - I shouldn't see any impact other than temporary fluctuation which is normal.

I actually like logging it, even if it is an estimate - I think so many people assume they are eating 5,000 + calories in a single meal and they might as well give up for the week, or the Holidays, or whatever. When you actually put things in, whether you are trying to be mindful or just saying F it, I'll eat whatever I want - having the numbers in front of you make it easier to put the whole thing in perspective.

I am pretty picky so most of what I am eating my husband is taking to the dinner. I prelogged on Monday. Yeah it's not perfect but, it's done and I know a general number I will be working with and I don't have to pick between being with family and logging.

Unfortunately..... With all the lovely leftovers, one day turns into several for me quite easily especially since I will be alone over the weekend this year. While I may not be terribly over on that one day, having that food stare me in the face singing it's siren song day after day is not what I need right now. Having a plan to deal with those issues I know will face in the aftermath of the "one day" is where I am hoping not to go this year.

Anyone that is so engrossed in paying nonstop attention to their family that they cannot bear to take 5 minutes to make a few entries on the MFP app is probably creeping everyone out. Take a few moments for yourself, brush your teeth, shower, go potty, log your food, your family will understand...
