I just finished the C25K program on Monday and was very doubtful that I could finish the 5k. My goal was to finish it without walking, just running.
I was able to do it!!
The first of your series of running achievements!beachhouse758 wrote: »The combination of the mild weather and running on asphalt (vs. my usual concrete) made a big difference!
Running on concrete is REALLY hard on your feet. I would avoid that as much as possible and try to run on asphalt against the traffic, a local track in your school district or on trails in local parks.beachhouse758 wrote: »I usually don't like crowds, but I really enjoyed the race. It was kind of confusing because I honestly didn't even know when it started, I just started walking from the back of the crowd. And it took me a while to realize that I needed to try to start running and make my way out of the group of walkers. (I felt so lost)
Most races are set up in "groupings" according to your expected pace. Walkers all the way at the back. People running, say, 16:00 mile, then 15:00, then 14:00 etc etc etc. This is to try and help the faster people from having to dodge around the slower ones during the race as much as possible.beachhouse758 wrote: »
Last, I have a question:
I am interested in working on my pace. I was thinking about getting a Garmin. But wonder if it is overkill.
I'm a big believer in "cheap". I don't spend money just to spend money. I did all my interval training for C25K using a kitchen timer and used that for the race as well. After I had stuck with my running for a long enough time, I decided I would get a smart phone and a running app. I bought a $10 reconditioned Android phone from my pay-as-you-go provider and downloaded RunKeeper (free) and that's what I use to track pace.
I now have a Garmin watch purchased used for $40 but haven't used it yet to give an opinion on what it would do in regard to HR monitoring etc.beachhouse758 wrote: »
I have a Polar FT4 HRM, which I love. And, for health reasons, having an accurate HRM is a must for me.
I don't really have a need to GPS since I don't run trails or venture into unfamiliar territory ever.
If you keep running longer and longer distances, eventually you'll find the GPS features of the apps to be helpful. (IMHO)beachhouse758 wrote: »
Should I just aim to use Map my Run to track my pace? Or is there a Garmin product that can serve as my HRM, while tracking my pace and not breaking the bank?
Short answer: Just use Map My Run..especially since you already have an HRM. Honestly, it might be possible to sync the Polar to MapMyRun and add the HR data to what it tracks already. The longer (in terms of days) that you continue to run, the more you will find that your pace naturally quickens.
When I began Run For God (essentially C25K plan with a Christian focus added), I couldn't run a mile. By the end of the course, my pace was probably around 14:00/mile. I now EASILY run 3-3.5 miles, have run up to 12 miles, and my pace on shorter runs is around 10:00/mile. This was all done by continuing the run/walk intervals. I still do that in races...but the "run" portion is longer now.
Thank you for the tips.
Now, If could only remember to turn Map My Run on and off I either forget to turn it on, or leave it on for days -- that's why I was considering other options. But maybe if I try to make it a habit... IDK.
This race just had a general grouping (sign) for 10 + So all the "slower" ones all grouped together, whether you are a 10:30 or a slow walker, so I was at the very, very back. Weird, but it was fun anyway.
The timing isn't all that important to me, as I only entered to celebrate the completion of the C25K program, but at least I know now.
Thank you for your insight.
*****
Yesterday, I ran again. I usually don't do consecutive days. Particularly bc of the concrete. And I felt fantastic while running, but when I got home my shins started to burn.
Live and learn.
And also, I noticed that for the first time ever running, my quads are sore. Yay! I think it is bc I was running faster than normal. Usually, I am out of breath wayyyy before my legs get to feel any of the work.
So I am happy, not bc of the DOMS per say, but because I think my cardiovascular endurance is improving enough that I am able to progress.
**********
On a totally random note, while waiting to pick up my race packet at a running store, I ended up buying a pair of life changing socks, lol:
Balega Hidden Comfort
The price is obscene for socks. But I don't think I ever want to run in anything else.
Brooks Adrenaline + Balega socks = perfection.0 -
I was really hoping that with running today and Monday I would hit my goal for November - and then I woke up with a terrible cold this morning I'll see what I'm up to doing on Monday (traveling tomorrow so that's not an option), but I likely won't hit my goal. Oh well
@Orphia - I'm asking for new shoes and winter gear (tights, gloves)
@Elise4270 - Just bought the book on amazon. I'll get it Monday Thank you for the suggestion0 -
I'm loving this thread.
Not only is it inspiring to see everyone's runs, and it's lovely to get to know people, but I'm learning a lot from our side discussions.
I thought I'd introduce a side question...
what does a keen runner want for Xmas in the way of running paraphernalia?
I have asked for a Fitbit Charge HR and a training journal

Hoping your hamstring recovers soon! Are there some stretches you can do to help it recover? I don't know much about it, but maybe YouTube some exercises? I've been doing ankle exercises from YouTube to try and help prepare for running again.. So there may be something helpful there for you too0 -

Talked with some work friends about the holiday streak and we decided to do it as a work thing so we could include our walking friends. Since I don't have high weekly mileage there are going to be a lot of 1 mile runs for a while!
Good work on hitting your Nov goal!! I will be walking a fair bit in Dec for the holiday streak and even when I can run I will only do short runs to build up again gotta love the challenges!0 -

Thank you! I'm just getting back into running after a while off so I do a fair bit of walking with a little running mixed in lol. The challenges and the people at work are what keeps me going so I'm loving it right now. I've just got to figure out how to not go crazy on mileage during this streak since I didn't have a lot of mileage built up to start with. My max was 9 miles a week so I'm thinking of doing 1 mile 6 days and 3 miles on the 7th day and see how that feels.
Hope your recovery goes quickly!0 -

A slow 14 km ( 1:45 ) run through the North Hills with the local running club and a couple from Grande Prairie who made the trip over ( 2 hr drive ) just to do a run- not sure if that's dedication or crazy. They joined the Long Run Group and did another 7km after we stopped for a full 21km. There comment was that they just don't have the incredible variety of Terrain that we do - Blessing and curse of the River Bank trails. Really enjoying our "No Snow" winter so far as normally these trails would be closed or on very limited terrain. Only 6-10cm ( 3-4 in ) of snow and it has just the perfect texture - crunchy - so you really feel safe with your stride. Two of the six North facing hills were a little sketchy but no one fell and no one felt the need to Butt Slide down a hill - the trails were fantastic - an enjoyable morning with friends. Coffee and Cinnamon Buns after the run.

@Elise4270
I find karrimor a good compromise between cost and quality (just been @ nike store, £90 for a pair of leggings!)
I've got leggings, lond sleeve shirt like this and a new jacket that is super good. The jacket has a hood, otherwise I was using a cap. plus gloves
to be fair the best leggings I love to use are Nike (I bought them in sale) but I don't recall the model
everything is windproof and waterproof0 -

Thanks everyone for the sympathetic comments on my toe!
48 hours later, it's not so bad anymore. As long as I don't move, it hardly hurts at all, and I found that walking around in sandals is also okay. Too bad it's -1°C out right now - I had to go for the combination of sandals + warm woolen socks to take a short walk today, very fashionable
@Orphia I don't have any special must-have running gadgets on my wish list. Last year I got a running belt for Christmas (to take phone and a little water on long runs in the summer). This year I asked for some long-sleeved running shirts (I moved to a colder area, I think some extra fleece under the jacket will come in handy).
And I also want stuff that blinks for better visibility in the darkness, but I was going to buy that right away rather than run the next month in the dark. Depending on how long I'll have to take a break for my toe, I could probably wait until Christmas - or maybe I'll compensate for not running by buying running stuff, we'll see ;-)
@Elise4270 against the rain, I have a rain jacket from Decathlon that keeps me dry in nearly all conditions - after 90 minutes of torrential rain it starts leaking at the seams, but for shorter runs or normal rain it's fine. But it's not a warm jacket, so it might not be what you are looking for.
The fact that it's a vest + a sleeve-hood-thingy drives me insane occasionally, when I'm in a hurry to put it on and get tangled in it, but I'm still a fan of it because it is the only jacket I've ever found where the hood turns properly with my head - I hate it when I want to look to the side and find myself staring at the inside of the hood, and that seems to happen with all other jackets I've had so far.
@beachhouse758 Sounds like you had a really nice first race, congratulations!
@Amandajs232 Kudos on running such a long distance.0 -

I injured it stretching, so now I have to strenghten it. I've got a list of exercises, so now it's just being diligent now that I'm not too sore from the marathon to do them. Hope your ankle is healing up well!!0 -
@_nikkiwolf_ thanks for the info. I have a thin non-running wind breaker that worked okay today for the light rain. I'll check out the one you use. I can just about assure you that I'll pass on the torrential rains... Although, I didn't mind today's rain run.
Edit I tried to order it but no luck since I'm in the US... Least on mobile its not working.0 -
