It's barely past noon and I've already had such a day! I made chili to put in the crock pot (smells delish), wrote the last few pages of a paper I need to edit and submit as a draft today, then did my "long" run (longest post-marathon, that is), and now I'm going to go hiking because it's 65 degrees and brightly sunshiney in DECEMBER. I should be writing papers and reading articles, but this weather is too amazing to pass up. It'll just have to be a late night.
For anyone keeping up on my cranky hamstring: it felt ok today, on hills I had to remember to take smaller steps going up so it wouldn't twinge. But otherwise felt great. And the 8:20 paces I've been running lately tell me that I'm back in decent form post-marathon. Training doesn't start again til the end of January, but I'll be able to get on a regular schedule now, which makes me very happy.
Upcoming races:
5/1/2016: New Jersey Marathon
6/12/2016: Run & Ride HM at Cedar Point
@skippygirlsmom Oh no, sorry about the knee! Hope it feels better soon! Hurting knees are the worst, I think. I've had my share of knee issues and I hope yours is quick to behave again!0 -

Up to about 15km so far so need to get moving!
If anyone uses the Adidas training app (micoach) please add me emma20120 -
12/2 - 3 miles at 4:15am, I am tired but glad I got out as it is supposed to be a rain/snow mix tomorrow. Good start to the month.
12/5 - 3 miles. Getting faster but still working on cutting out the walk breaks.
12/7 - 1.5 miles. I tried my hilly park run and it was too much. My piriformis was complaining on the first down hill so I made it one loop instead of my planned 2 and quit. I gave it a good stretch and a cold shower when I got home and it is good today.
12/9 - 2.5 miles. Very stiff and sore. Never got into a good rhythm or loosened up after a session the day before with my trainer.
12/12 - 3 miles. Had an unleashed dog come running out to "protect" her owner as Neeko and I were going past. Luckily her owner was right there and she didn't go into attack mode, just ran out and barked at us. Only thing that got me really mad was her owner saw us coming and did nothing until she started out the drive and across the street. Luckily Neeko didn't really react and listened when I told him to stay and sit as he has a tendency to fixate and go into protect mode himself or it could have gone really badly.
13 down 12 to go.

Congrats @Stoshew71 on your race! I'm sorry yours didn't work out 'til the end @ACSL3 , but you made a good decision for the sake of your future runs. I hope you're up and at them very soon!
I had a 5K this morning that was supposed to be a "moral support" run for a friend who was running her first race, but she got sick and dropped out. So I decided to see how fast I could run it, in spite of my own impending head cold. I think I did pretty well! I'm still not where I'd like to be (sub-30), but I've taken more than 2 minutes off my time in the past 4.5 months.
ETA: I just wanted to note that I think my improvement is definitely evidence that the "put in the long, slow miles, and you'll run faster" advice is spot on. I *never* run 10:10 for 3 miles when I'm doing my regular running. Most of my runs are slower than an 11-minute mile. And yet--when it came time to run fast, I could! Hooray!
12/1 3.5 @ 11:17 on the treadmill plus strength training
12/2 5.25 @ 11:04 on the treadmill. Oh my heck, please let it be sunny tomorrow. Or at least not so wet.
12/3 4.75 @ 12:03 on the park trail with the doggy. Yay! Sunshine!
12/4 3.5 @ 11:03 (really 3.25 at 10:48, plus .25 at a walk) on the treadmill, plus strength training
12/5 3 miles hiking with the cub scouts
12/6 Woke up feeling sore from Friday's strength training, so took a rest day
12/7 9.25 @ 12:26 on the park trail, nice and easy
12/8 3.75 @ 10:48 on the treadmill (3.5 at 10:39, .25 walk), plus stretch/yoga
12/9 5.25 @ 11:32 on the treadmill
12/10 Sort of rest day? Trip to Colonial Williamsburg with my daughter's history class. Lots of walking!
12/11 6.25 @ 11:18 on the treadmill.
12/12 Rest Day
12/13 3.25 @ 10:10 (5K race chip time 32:06--I finished 191/395 women 30/64 in my age group).

Yeah, in addition to my prolific history of crashing and burning, the ink is closely tied to my running. Like @MobyCarp, I am late in getting into the running party. I didn't start until I was 53, although @MobyCarp must have some amazing effing genes, because I can't even come close to his miles and speeds. That old goat can run. I just hack out as many miles as I can without any concern for speed or races. I sign up for one or two long trail races a year because I like training for them... but I don't particularly like running them... too many people...lol.

@5BeautifulDays .... nice run today!0

I got about 5 steps past the aid station and landed on a rock wrong with my left foot. Don't actually remember falling, just remember moving myself on the ground to sit on my backside. Scraped up my right lower leg decently (but no blood) and twisted my left ankle.
So sorry to hear about your ankle. It hurts so much, doesn't it! I have only done a few runs since hurting mine but i am very wary now and feel a bit robotic almost because I'm so careful now. Hoping for a speedy recovery for you!!

According to the Nike+ app, I am running around a 12 minute mile.. Actually thought I'd be slower than this so that's pretty cool!0

@kareF and @5BeautifulDays - Thanks. It looks worse today (swelling and bruising) but actually feels better. I'm icing it periodically and got some good stuff to wrap it up to hopefully decrease the swelling (without decreasing those good immune/inflammatory cells to help heal everything). I think it's a first or second degree sprain, which at least is better than the third degree sprain on the same ankle about 2.5 years ago. That one kept me from running for a few months - I'm hoping this one will be a shorter recovery.
@5BeautifulDays - Nice 5k time!
@Elise4270 - Haha, I'm sure my mother says the same thing about me. I generally don't want things making it difficult for her when we go shopping together and she wants to buy me stuff. At least this year there were some running things I wanted
@kareF - Glad you're back to running - 12 min/mi sounds awesome0 -

12/12- 16.00 long slow run
12/13- 10.05 easy with hills
Total- 91.63
Goal- none stated
Today's notes: I needed 9 miles to get my 45 in for the training week. Had a bad case of I Don't Care, and set out on a 10 mile route because I hadn't run it in a while, it has hills, I felt like running some hills, and I'll live with stretching the training week to 46 miles. The idea was to hold to around an 8 minute mile average; ran 10.05 miles in 1:19:07 for a 7:52 average. I confess that the last mile was something of a rest room dash, and I finished with a stride; but I'm content with this. The iffy glute felt totally normal, even on the stride at the end. It's looking good for being able to treat Reindeer Run as a race next Saturday.
@MorningGhost14 - funny you should call me that old goat. Around here, the "old goat" is Charlie Sabatine, who organizes Charlie's Old Goat Trail Run. You cross the finish line, and he hands you a mini-bottle of champagne. Charlie says it's really easy to win his age group at 85; all he has to do is show up, or maybe beat one other guy. I hope I can run as well as he does when I get to that age.
Upcoming races:
Dec. 19, 2015 Reindeer Run 5K (Rochester, NY)
Jan. 1, 2016 Resolution Run 7.5 mile (Mendon, NY)
Jan. 9, 2016 Winter Warrior Half Marathon (Rochester, NY)
April 18, 2016 Boston Marathon (Hopkinton, MA)0 -
@MobyCarp .... looks like a fun race... its not overly far away...0

I should have known better than to do a challenge this month. Working the store all day everyday during Christmas time leaves little time for anything else. I will still do what I can, but I obviously won't make my measly goal. I want to at least keep my can tear it up Next month!0

@kristinegift Sounds like you have a full day, enjoy the sunny hiking trip :-)
@skippygirlsmom Hope your PT will be able to help you with the knee!
@ACSL3 Wow, 2800 ft elevation would probably kill me! How frustrating that you fell and DNF, but running up all that elevation is awesome by itself.
@Stoshew71 , I couldn't do the live-follow-thing (non-US = no SMS), but I saw the result on Strava. A really impressing marathon finish time! I'm looking forward to read more about the race
@5BeautifulDays Great 5k time! It's true, long slow runs really help run faster on short runs. Feels a bit like magic to me, but it works
@MobyCarp I've read quite a few times that one should include some runs with a "strong finish" in race training. I guess a "rest room dash" does that job ;-P

I took a few days off of running - two because my black-and-blue toenail had started to come loose in a really irritating way, and another after it had finally fallen off, because the toe underneath was a bit raw. Today everything felt fine, so I spontaneously went for a run when I came home from the gym. No problems, although a toe without a nail looks really, really weird to me! Can't wait for it to grow back. But as long as I'm wearing my running shoes, I can't see the toe, so all is well ;-)0 -
Had a little trouble finding motivation during Week 2. I only managed to do 3 of my 4 training runs because I was super busy with the end of the semester. I did manage to do some cross training though. More than halfway to my goal!!!

I'm with you in your introverted running! (But not too close...you run your trail, I'll run mine, lol!) I love quiet, lonely running zen. A race now and again is fun, but it is best when the trail is completely empty.

@_nikkiwolf_ Glad the toe is good to go! I had a pinky toe nail fall off many years ago, and I've had another nail that's slightly loose ever since (both came loose due to too small of shoes -- rookie mistake!). Toes do look quite strange sans nails!0 -

December Mileage= 7.5/350 -
Wanted to get in an intermediate distance 10 mile run tonight before doing 20 miles tomorrow, so I managed to get a neighbor to join me for the first 5 before doing the second half on my own. His pace was a bit slow, but it was enough to get my HR to the 60% mark, so I'll take the company over the boredom of that distance. With 9 miles also planned for Tuesday/Wednesday, I'll be at 110/230 by the midpoint of the month, which should keep my target within reach.

Got a 5km run in tonight and 1.5km walk to cool down (on top of the 2.6k walk this morning)
Legs are feeling great!! Taking around 2km for my legs to warm up though feel great once I move past it. Might sound a bit much, but I have ordered some melanoma awareness tees that I can run in.. they have slogans on the tshirts to remind people to check their skin. It might sound strange I don't know.. but I thought if it helps remind one person now and then to get their skin checked then it's worth it?
Saw a mother and son running and he stopped to walk for a bit. He asked his mum how he was doing and she yelled "You're doing so well. Your stamina is amazing.. You just need to slow down!" He started running again and looked so happy that his mum had given him such great feedback. I love seeing parents out with their kids exercising!
Got me thinking - I really wish I had started exercising more as a kid.. Not just running, but any sport, really.
Here's a question for you all : On the running subject - How old were you when you started running? Did you run as a kid and then stop for a few years? Or did you just start up one day and keep going? Maybe someone inspired you?0 -
Hi all, newbie runner here. To answer kareF, I started running five months ago at the age of 50. I'll definitely get in the January challenge. Currently run 3-4 days a week. New friends appreciated!0
-
@karef - started running at 52. I was away for a month in Monterey, Ca and the weather was so perfect, I didn't have my gym and I started Couch 2 5K. When I got back home to Florida, I had to start it over because of the humidity. Been addicted since.
Dec 1 - 2.64
Dec 2 - 5K
Dec 3 - 1.4 streak
Dec 4 - 5.16 miles
Dec 5 - 4.16 miles - Savannah! Wish I had more time because this was the best run ever.
Dec 6 - 5.5 miles
Dec 7 - 1.1
Dec 8 - 4 miles
Dec 9 - 1.4 miles - streak
Dec 10 - 3.75 miles
Dec 11 - 6 miles
