Here's a question for you all : On the running subject - How old were you when you started running? Did you run as a kid and then stop for a few years? Or did you just start up one day and keep going? Maybe someone inspired you?

I started running at 43 years old after the summer of 2014. I wanted to lose weight and figured from here MFP forum that running is still the most time efficient way to burn calories. It was motivated to see how I could do more every week from C25K. But I lost motivation after the first race in Thanksgiving. But by now, my husband got motivated and started C25K. And that got me motivated again. I am not sure if I truly loves running like many others here but I surely got addicted to getting a new race time. And also, I would like to be that mom you described -- encouraging my kids to run. I don't want my kids grow up like I did - not exercising at all. Now, our family run together every weekend with some other families.

    2/12 2k
    3/12 1k
    5/12 7k
    6/12 7k
    7/12 2k
    14/12 2k
    15/12 5k

Never made it to gym in morning, left work 1.5 hours late thinking I was going to buy a bottle of wine. Went to gym and did 5k in decent time for me. Result!
@kareF great questions - everyone has such interesting and varied stories. Really enjoyed the answers.

Been stuck inside for the last 2 days with a wicked case of "the runs." Getting VERY antsy to get on the road. Also a little worried about getting my goal miles....

@Stoshew71: 10K and some change? :P This is what I get for skimming quickly.. I am still dreaming of seeing a split in the 7 minutes..sure couldn’t do it repeatedly for hours. Hats off, sir!

hahaha I am just very fortunate that I can even run 26+ miles. Back when I started running in October 2013, they were talking about the RCM on TV. (RCM is a big deal around here.) It was even more huge that year because our local hero Josh Whitehead won it. I remember reading about it in the paper and watching the news about it on TV and thinking to myself, you would be crazy to think I could do that. Then a year later, I am doing it. And this year was my second try at it.

After I relooked at my data and saw all the sub 8 splits, I was kind of in disbelief. Everything on paper told me that i could achieve it, I just had to go out there and prove it to myself.

    Thanks everyone for the support.

And to those wishing me a Happy Birthday, I do appreciate all the well wishes as well. Thank you everybody.

That's fantastic Stan! Numbers and all are great, but to be doing what seemed impossible is most impressive for sure! Happy birthday too! Hope it's a great day and a great year for ya!

2/1 - 1.6 miles - 3K fun run with my friend John, who just lost almost 100 lbs :sunglasses: Oh yeah I realize 1.6 isn't a 3K but that's what they called it even though my watch said 1.6

Quick question.. How long does it take you to wear in new shoes?

Although the Nikes started hurting my arches after 300 km, the only other problem I had with them was I didn't feel they were stable enough around the ankle.

I am finding the new Asics Cumulus 16's comfortable with the extra support and cushioning, though my feet/legs are taking forever to warm up in my runs and I seem to be slapping my feet on the ground? This used to happen with the Nikes while I was warming up, though it would pass after the 2nd km.... But I am slapping my feet constantly in the Asics.. Not sure what's happening?

Another thing I've noticed.. The Asics are slippery on wet pavement.. Do I need to scuff them a bit or is that just how Asics tread are? The nikes are a soft rubber and grip really well in the wet - I may have to wear my old pair this afternoon if I go for another run in the rain!

Just wonder how long it could take for my feet/legs to adjust to using the Asics... Another part of me wonders if I should have just stuck with the Nikes Pegasus and just got a new pair of them, rather than trying Asics :smirk:

AND.... shin splints are back in both legs! :worried:

    December Running Totals (miles)
12/1- 6.58 (warmup, speed work, cool down)
    12/2- extra rest day :(
    12/3- 6.40 easy
    12/4- 8.12 easy
    12/5-15.00 long slow run
    12/6-9.15 easy with hills
    12/7- planned rest day
    12/8- 8.29 easy
    12/9- 6.00 easy
12/10- unscheduled rest day (plan was 6 miles)
12/11- 6.04 easy (instead of planned rest day)
    12/12- 16.00 long slow run
    12/13- 10.05 easy
    12/14- 6.07 easy
    12/15- 8.21 hills
    12/16- scheduled rest day

    Total- 105.91
    Goal- none stated

Today's notes: Tuesdays have recently been speed work with the running club, but there was no meeting today. Instead, I went to the Cobb's Hill run, a regular Tuesday run from the local Fleet Feet. It can be used as a true hill workout, but I typically just run the hill, starting easy and letting my pace go wherever it's comfortable. Today I set out early because I wanted to get 8 miles in, and I can only get a bit over 6 if I start when they say to. My typical 6 mile run starts easy, and accelerates to what I call "moderate," which is the no-man's-land between E and MP. Today I looked at my watch during mile 7, and saw I was running about MP. Post-run splits look like 3 miles easy, 3 miles moderate, 2 miles about MP. Then I ran the tag end partial mile at T. It felt pretty good, even if it wasn't a true speed workout.

Rest day tomorrow, because work is very likely to blow up on me late and interfere with any evening running plans. Can't run tomorrow noon, because there is a work Christmas luncheon. My stress level over this is way down since I made the decision to schedule tomorrow as a rest day and work around it with the rest of the training week.

    Upcoming races:
Dec. 19, 2015 Reindeer Run 5K (Rochester, NY)
Jan. 1, 2016 Resolution Run 7.5 mile (Mendon, NY)
Jan. 9, 2016 Winter Warrior Half Marathon (Rochester, NY)
April 18, 2016 Boston Marathon (Hopkinton, MA)

Did just over 10k today.. I've entered it all seperately as I went for two runs and a short walk to stretch. To be honest, I did think the shoes were giving me a hard time and taking a while to adjust but I think part of the problem is the humidity at the moment too - My head and chest are fine and want to run but my legs are just not liking the heat and are having trouble moving. Think I am going to stick to 5k runs for the time being, just until I feel like I have more fitness back.. As for Winter - I hope all of you over the other side of the world are enjoying wintery runs - I am already over running in Summer here!! :persevere:

Finally crossed the century mark with tonight's 10 miles, and with another 10 tomorrow should get roughly on track for my mileage goal.

    12/1 - 4 miles
    12/2 - 4 miles (hill repeats at a 7 pace)
    12/3 - 4 miles
    12/5 - 6 miles
    12/6 - 4 miles (5k in 19:26 - 2nd/85 runners)
    12/7 - 15 miles (w. speedwork session in middle)
    12/8 - 6 miles
12/9 - 7.5 miles (w. group tempo session in middle)
    12/10 - 7 miles
    12/11 - 3 miles
    12/12 - 1 mile (pre lift warmup)
    12/13 - 10 miles
    12/14 - 20 miles (w. speedwork session in middle)
    12/15 - 10 miles

    Total: 101.5 miles
    Goal: 230 miles
    Remaining: 128.5 miles

@mobycarp - looking at BQ vs. Kona qualifying, at my target race, 2% get the nod for Kona (50 spots vs. 2500 entrants), while about 8% of 40-44 age groupers in my usual marathon (Pittsburgh) post a qualifying Boston time so Kona next year would definitely be quite a bit harder to pull off - especially given how hardcore many ironman competitors are. Last year's final qualifier time for my age group of 9:30 would require me to race at roughly the same pace as I currently bike/run an olympic tri at (22mph bike, 7 min/mile run) and swim slightly faster. Still, as you mentioned, once you do 10 races + 1/year for the past 5 years, you can get an automatic legacy spot which may be a slightly more feasible route. Still, I definitely have the time available to train if I really want to push for it, and I spend a bit more time biking vs. running already.

@kareF - I've run in quite a few pairs of Cumulus 15s + 16s (but no 17s yet), and really didn't notice much of a break-in period beyond the first 20 miles. My Nimbus 17s are getting stiffer after about 50 miles which is a good thing as they were almost too cushy. I don't run on snow, so I've never noticed how slippery they are.

Did my fastest time on 2.1 miles yet (just started back up again and I'm on C25K Week 6, Day 3).

I forgot from my past running experience how much I enjoy running when I've built up my stamina! I felt like I could have gone forever on Sunday!!!

    December Mileage= 4.5/35

C25K week 7, day 1 done. I'm about a half a mile slower than the app wants me to be, but on the plus side I'm way faster than I used to be!

    December Mileage=6.5/35

Finally getting to update my mileage...December Mileage=15.5/35

Gotta start cracking down to power through the rest of December.

@kareF I was 51 when I started running. As a kid I did not run except at school during GYM Class. In November 2013 while walking down a flight of stairs My left knee locked up and I tore the Meniscus in it. My PT recommended swimming as a non-weight bearing exercise as part of the rehab and that I lose a few pounds to take the stress off the Joints. Dietician recommended a calorie counting program and MFP was 1 of many she mentioned. I was being very successful on MFP losing weight and in early July of 2014 I found out that the Swimming Pool was going to be closed for the month of September for a Maintenance turn around. Since my PT had me walking on the treadmill and was slowly ramping up the speed as part of my warm up & therapy I asked if I could try running when healed and finished PT. She said yes and introduced me to the concept of C25K. She did not re-commend any particular plan just the concept. Did all the normal mistakes that we read about in the C25K Board, tried to run to fast, to far and with a pair of "running shoes" I had in the back of the closet. Got fitted for shoes, slowed down, joined the local Running club and have been slowly improving. 52 Years old and running for a little over a year. Lurked around different running Forums before stumbling onto this group. Been here every since.

Quick question.. How long does it take you to wear in new shoes?
Personally I have never had to "Wear in" or Break in new shoes. Any of the shoes I have purchased seem to be a perfect fit and have never given me any Break-in pains. My theory when it comes to shoes is " if it works stick with it." If your budget allows it look at another pair of Nikes and a secondary foot bed/arch support. This way you can run alternate days in a different shoe of the same style. As to Traction 80-90% of my Km's are now on Wild Trails-not cement/asphalt - just good old dirt and rocks so a very different terrain.
Any time I have suffered from Shin-splints/body aches it's because I was doing to much to fast or my shoes were wrong/worn out. Try slowing down and maybe reduce your distance, I see you just cut back your last run to 5 Km, stay at that distance for 2-3 weeks then a modest 10-20% increase ( 6 km ) as an experiment. It can't hurt and if it works for you problem solved. If not then its time to look at technique and shoes.
Other runners with more Km/Miles/Years probably have a better experience/knowledge base than my 18 months of running.

@juliet3455  Love your running story! Love sitting down with a cuppa and reading through everyone's stories and how much they love running!!

On the shin splints.. It's something I had suffered for years, although managed to overcome in the Nikes that I was running in. I wore compression sleeves, iced and rolled after each run until it started to ease and my legs got better with handling the distance etc. Although I have just had 5 weeks off with a bad ankle sprain.. My bad for jumping in with a few 5k's straight up I know, but I figure I will just keep working at it and massaging my legs and hopefully it will pass again. I think running in new shoes too might be a bit of a shock - I am going to stick with them - I paid a lot for them! The nikes didn't have much cushioning and the asics have a lot of cushioning .. so I'm hoping my legs are just adjusting a bit. The distance wouldn't help of course, but the shin splints eased away last time after a few months so fingers crossed!

Changed my user name from "karef" to runner_girl83 too.. Sorry for any confusion!

Good run today. Really looking forward to tomorrow's group run: it's an ugly sweater run (though since it's forecasted to be 100% rain, probably won't actually run in a wool sweater... lol) and our first annual holiday party! People are bringing holiday treats and then we get to treat ourselves to some free beer from a local brewery. And the best part is? The next day (Friday) I will be Iowa-bound! I know Iowa doesn't sound exciting, but as an Iowa native whose family is all snug as bugs there, it's exciting to me! I haven't seen my family since the last time I was home in June, so we have a lot of politics talk to catch up on ;)

Anyone else doing some exciting traveling for the holidays?

    exercise.png
So I have 15 days to run 61 more miles? Eeek! I think I can manage a 4-a-day average over the holidays... or at least I hope so!

    Upcoming races:
    5/1/2016: New Jersey Marathon
6/12/2016: Run & Ride HM at Cedar Point (maybe)

I'm a little late to the party and a newbie but I'd like to join in! My goal is 25 miles in December. Just getting back into running along with starting a new lifting routine so my legs have been a little shaky the last week. :)

I'm not able to edit my original post but:

    12/8 3.00 miles @ 9.53 -- 22 miles remaining
    12/16 2.00 miles @ 9.31 -- 20 miles remaining (I better kick up my efforts a bit)

ETA: I'm having a lot of shin pain since starting to run again, it's been going on for a few months now. I went to my local running store and got fitted for shoes but it seems that my shins just can't recover... Any tips or tricks? I stretch really good after a run and ice them. In addition I've been doing strength training on the side to aid my running (work my legs about 2x/week). Today it hurts just to walk. I know there's an adjustment period when starting a new exercise, but this seems to be lasting a while and I've never experienced this before. Part of the reason my runs are scarce is because I'm trying to get my shins to feel better. I feel it every time my foot hits the ground when running.

1-6.65mi build up run from 13:07-11:04
    2-strength and yoga day
3-6.69mi fast run 11:40, technically. but reality is we have 5 min warm up and potty breaks for the dog
4-rest day, maybe yoga day. feeling poopy
5-13.17mi I was only scheduled for 11 but I was feeling so good at 9 miles I went on and decided to do a whole 13. I have to say a marathon isn't that scarey now.
6-3.18mi for recovery and to do the Runkeeper Global 5k
    7-yoga
8-rest day. so tired i'm dizzy. not sure why
9-no sleep last night-rest. I'm calling it recovery week from the 18miles this weekend  aerial yoga at night
10-3.12mi with hills, including two steep ones. top of quads and hips still feel extremely tight
11-planned on running but was too tired still. rest day
12-10.37 it went well. I was supposed to run the last three with my stepdaughter-to-be but typical teenager, she slept in. tried a new trail. it was nice and foggy. good run
13-meant to make up the other three. didn't happen
    14-yoga day.
15-6.56mi They felt fast. I felt fast. runkeepers updates overall made me sound fast, but i was slow. 1 min off my pace.
16-yoga day. I did a video for the GOT challenge. not as satisfying as my asanas :(

    upcoming race:
feb 13: Steve Cullen Healthy Heart Run/Walk
mar 14: The Great Pi Run 5k (tenative). I want to do it but SE vacation may get in the way. :frowning:

@runner_girl83 I haven't had much of a break in period. maybe a few runs till i get the ankle broken in. I have low ankle bones

Looks like another month where I will struggle to met my goal. I knew it would be tough with the holidays and time of year, but it still didn't feel unreasonable. Funny, the rest of the year, prior to joining this challenge, I exceeded my goal every month. I think this challenge might be a curse for me!

Or wear a disposable pair of socks.

The socks aren't the problem - weather has been requiring some tights, and they're not cheap!

12/1 - 4 miles on indoor track + 4.5 miles on stationary bike
12/2 - Took my rest day early. Weather is supposed to be way better this weekend, so planning to run long(er) than usual both days.
12/3 - 5.09 miles on treadmill (Trek class)
    12/4 - 4 miles on indoor track + weights/abs
12/5 - 5.5 miles (I think)...my phone / GPS crashed after about 4, so I lost my distance and time
12/6 - 3.1 miles on small indoor track
    12/7 - unplanned rest day
    12/8 - 4 miles on indoor track + weight/abs
12/9 - 5.25 beautiful miles...40° F at 5:00 a.m. in December! Ran a route that I used a lot last spring/summer, but had been a while. Fun, relaxing, almost perfect!
12/10 - 5.25 miles on treadmill (Trek class)
    12/11 - 3.1 miles on indoor track + weights/abs
    12/12 - 6 chilly miles
    12/13 - rest day
    12/14 - life day
    12/15 - 4 miles on indoor track + weights
    12/15 - 5 wind-blown miles. Can't complain about 42° F at 5 a.m. on December 16 though!

@runner_girl83 (kareF) - Not sure about a break-in period, I have never had that issue. I will say that the Cumulus 16's I am currently running in are a little more slippery on wet pavement than the Brooks Ghost and Saucony Ride models I also have used recently.
