Grapefruit

How do people eat it? I have never had it other than to put sugar all over it?

I buy those big containers of it already cut up. They are pricey but when I figured out the price compared to buying whole grapefruits they make sense. Anyway, I get the one in light syrup so it is lightly sweetened. I tried the plain (I believe they are in water or their own juice) and they were so sour. I ended up putting Sweet 'n Low on them.

I was so happy to learn that grapefruit is not the "diet super food" it seemed to be back in the 80's and 90's. Seriously... if you wanted to go on a diet back then, the first thing you did was eat grapefruit for breakfast and then pop in your Jane Fonda Low Impact Aerobics tape. I could never choke a plain one down.

I used to try and eat it with artificial sweetener. I've found, however, it's much better as a juice or mixed with other (much sweeter) fruits.

I peel it like an orange and eat the segments.

This. And I also peel off the white membrane off of each segment so it's less bitter

I either eat the segments or spoon it out of the peel. I put salt on it either way.

Yup. It's delicious! Especially the ruby red ones.

And now I want grapefruit. Fortunately, I was already planning on stopping by the grocery store this evening.

I love grapefruit! Plain, though. No added sugar or sweetener. I use a sharp knife and section it, which is the way I eat oranges as well. I don't like the white part or any of the skin.

Last year a client brought me a bag of grapefruit freshly picked off their tree in AZ. They were the size of cantaloupes and hands down the best I've ever tasted. Now the ones at the local grocery store don't taste nearly as good, but they will have to do.

    Pomelo is a grapefruit :D
Seriously, I found a white fleshed variety once that was sweet. I'd eat grapefruit every day if I could have that.
If you need to put sugar on your diet food to make it go down, I'd doubt the suoperfood claims.

As an aside, grapefruit contains an enzyme that adversely interacts with a wide range of medications. Anyone on blood pressure medication should avoid grapefruit.

I like sour, so I eat grapefruit sour.

There is a spoon specifically designed for grapefruit

If you cut them in half and spread some honey or sprinkle brown sugar on top, then broil until its all nice and caramelized -- You are in for a treat. Try it warm sometime. It changes the experience entirely.

    This^

If the skin on the segments bothers you, it's super easy to pull off.

Broiled grapefruit. Add a sprinkle of brown sugar first.

Forget the grapefruit and move to the pomelo...the genetic parent of the grapefruit. Less bitter and one fruit will last you days...

Ohhhhh my God that sounds amazing!!!! I've never tried it warm, I usually just cut it in half and then spoon out the sections without the membrane. I'm going to have to try that, I don't usually sweeten it, but a little honey and warm... I'm salivating. I know what I'm making for dessert tonight!

I slice it in half and roast mine without any sugar added. It's amazing when it's cooked. I like to eat it like an orange too.

I LOVE grapefruit. I wish it wasn't so expensive here.

I know the spoons are readily available with higher quality/cost silverware sets but I just did a quick search on amazon and it brought some less expensive ones up.

Eta I did a search for "grapefruit spoons"

I peel it with a knife. Then cut into segments over a bowl to catch the juice. Eat the segments and drink the juice.
I bought a bag recently of ruby reds and I swear they tasted like they had sugar on them...sweetest I've ever had. A great way to get your vitamin C intake!
