Why do you keep your diary private?

I understand keeping it viewable to friends only, that is what I do. But why do you keep your diary private from all? What are your reasons? What's hiding in there?

I think it might be discouraging to some of my friends when I commute to work on my bike and I get to eat 2500 - 3000 calories when they only get 1200.0

Its not shared by default. Most people go with default settings, hence more people end up with protected diaries... thats my guess.0

Accountability....some people don't want others calling them out on their shenanigans :laugh:0

Mine was defaulted private---I'm glad I changed it though! I mean, I need to be held accountable for what I eat....And the best way for me to be held accountable is making what goes in my mouth public knowledge!0

I had mine set that way by default and never cared to change it. I'm doing this for me, not anyone else. If people were that curious about my diary, I'm sure they would have asked and then I would be happy to share. But no one has asked so it stays closed. Simple.0

My diary was private until someone asked me to open it. I didn't open it because i didn't know it was closed.
But, for those who actually choose to keep their diary private, it's probably like real life. Some people are just more private than others. And that's ok.0 -

i keep mine private because i am a particularly fussy eater, recently found out i became like this from the age of 1. i know that if people could see my diary i would be put off from been truthful about what i eat and this then defeats the object of keeping the diary. i know this is silly but yet another remember i am self-conscious about what other people think of me.0

I had mine public for a while, I even posted daily results on my FB page. I got tired of my diet being picked apart by everyone. I know if I'm eating too much sodium or not enough calories, etc... MFP tells me!!! The advice or criticism even was ridiculous. I thought posting it would keep me in check, but was just frustrating.0

Actually, yes. I'm not always proud of my food choices, and although they're a mile above where I used to be, I don't feel ready yet to have people approve or disapprove of my choices. I still make mistakes and have fast food on occasion. I just don't need someone telling me it was a bad choice. I already know.0 -
I am not here for people to point out the flaws in my diet, but on the flip side, I don't whine about not loosing or ask why something isn't working. I know what I need and what I allow myself. Occassionally, that cake with frosting is in there and worth it. :laugh:

I turned mine to private, because I had people who would make judgemental comments about what I was eating. So then I wouldn't put in what I was really eating because I didn't want to have to answer for an "off" meal. I realized then that I was only cheating myself and wouldn't get to my goal if I didn't fill it out completely so I turned it to private. Since I turned it to private I have been more honest with myself in what I have been really eating and have learned what I can cut out.0

On the contrary, it might be motivating to those friends to exercise more so they too can eat more...0 -
mine was default private, and i kept it that way for a while because i didn't want everyone to see all the junk i was eating and still being under my calorie goal then i decided i needed to eat healthier too and i switched to it friends only so people can keep me in check.0

I had mine public to friends for a while and then I found people were looking at it and commenting--nothing bad about it at all as I eat really, really good food 99% of the time. It just felt a little like people going through my bathroom cabinets--there's nothing to hide but people don't need to know "exactly" what's in there... ;o)0

Mine is private, because I have to learn how to keep myself acoountable! I will not always be in the losing weight part of my journey, I am the only one who can really hold myself accountable. I am the one who puts the food in my mouth-- no one else!0

The funny thing about losing weight is everyone else seems to know the best way for you to do it. If there is one thing I've learned is you have to find your own path both physically (eating/exercise) and emotionally. Im not interested in people judging or tell me whats best for me. If I wanted that, I would hire a trainer or a dietician.0 -
I keep mine private because I find it make me more accountable to myself - and that's really what matters.
I was finding on days that I would be over my calories, I wouldn't log it so I wouldn't be in the red for people to pick apart. Now that only I can see it, I log EVERYTHING, because I know no one is going to jump down my throat if I'm over calories, or sodium, or carbs, or WHATEVER.
And in the end, this is about me and I find it more beneficial if I'm actually honest with my diary, rather than smudge it to make me "look better" to those users that have nothing good to say about your diary.
(MOST users are helpful and not rude, but I have gotten comments about being over on Sodium, or how I need to eat more of this or more of that and I just got tired of it)0 -
Mine is private because I like to write personal messages to myself about my day and how I'm feeling. It's called a diary and I choose to keep it private for just that reason.0

Because most people are doing it for themselves and don't have the need or want, Hence the word diary. When you were a child did you have a diary and did you let everyone read it? Besides what works for them doesn't mean it will work for you.0

Honestly, I keep mine private because I eat horribly. It's both my food choices and my portion sizes. I'm hoping within another month I will have my eating habits under control and will begin to share it. I already feel bad enough about how poorly I eat so I don't need someone commenting on what a heifer I have been.
Feeling comfortable enough to share my food diary is definitely a goal though!0 -
I made mine open when I figured out that they were closed by default.
I know that I hold myself more accountable on the chance that someone might look what I was eating and that someone can easily see my information if I have a question.
That being said, apparently I am insecure because I sure wouldn't want to hear the criticism about it. Yes, I had a small cheeseburger and small fries yesterday for lunch (I really did--it was delicious.) No, I didn't even make it to the gym yesterday. But who cares, I wanted to celebrate a little with an awesome burger--and I stayed under my calories for the day.0 -
Mine is available to my friends and their's to me as well. I have in the past have accepted friend requests from people who use MFP only as a social site, i.e. spending all day making random posts and doing nothing to get fit and when I looked at their lack of exercise and the fact they were eating pizza and cupcakes for every meal, promptly deleted them. This was because we had nothing in common.
I for one am glad for those that do put in the work and maintain or try to maintain a diet, I realize everyone slips from time to time, that is what makes us all human.0 -
I love looking at what people eat, just for ideas mostly. I would NEVER tell someone anything besides good job or something. Like someone said MFP tells you when you are over calories or whatever. I cant believe people would comment on poor choices, or extra calories. That person would be deleted!0
