Gonna throw this out there for some ideas. The half marathon I'm signed up for has 6 miles on gravel road. I'm currently running Nike Pegasus 32 for shoes. I haven't run on gravel much (not much near me) I am wondering, are they an appropriate shoe for this? I love them, so it's actually not an excuse to get another pair of shoes, just out of curiosity.

Most of my running is on chipped granite and gravel, I can use road shoes on it just fine. But I do most of my running on it, so I'm use to it. My husband hates running the trails because it's harder.

So, I'd focus on finding a practice area if possible, even dirt. Any shoe should be OK. But 6 miles, could be a big deal if you're not use to it. Also you should anticipate that you likely won't be able to keep a road pace on gravel.

Oh, now new trail like shoes could be a good idea.. I LOVE trail shoes. They do offer some advantages on gravel. My road shoes lack a bit.
A.D.D. moment- oh! I have new trail shoes to try out!

Thanks! I'm over the funk. Especially after Lenny pointed out my pacing on Strava, and overlaying the elevation. I was a beast.

Thanks for the advice! I just zoomed in on google earth and found out that a trail, that I thought was just a ski trail, appears to be a dirt or gravel trail....12 miles long just outside my town. Sa soon as the snow melts, I'll check it out. Might be a good option for some of my runs.

I figure one run a week will be a nice break, for one of my shorter runs. Trail looks pretty hilly, so it should be good for a 4-5 miler this summer

Well, I drove over to the trail I wanted to run and found a sign that said "closed for improvements". Boo. But there's a nice park across the street where I got my 3 miles done :) That's 52 of my 52 March miles done. Everything from here is "extra" :-D

    3/1/16 - 2 miles
    3/4/16 - 6 miles
    3/5/16 - 4.5 miles
    3/6/16 - 3.1 miles
    3/11/16 - 6.2 miles
    3/12/16 - 5 miles
    3/14/16 - 3 miles
    3/15/16 - 4 miles
    3/18/16 - 6.5 miles
    3/19/16 - 4 miles
    3/20/16 - 5 miles
    3/21/16 - 3 miles

@meganridenour There's been so much rain in Louisiana :-/ That's my home state but I've been in Arkansas since 1999.

@MNLittleFinn I have Nike Pegasus 31 :) I run in those and Brooks Ghost 7. I don't know how much the Pegasus 32 differs but one thing I like about mine is that I can't get rocks/gravel stuck in the bottom! The trail where I do my "long" run on Fridays, is concrete but there's large sections where they have a narrow gravel path beside the concrete. I LOVE to get over and run on the fine gravel. But if I switch back to concrete and have gravel stuck in my shoes, it drives me nuts and I have to stop and dig it out! The way the rocks scrape on the concrete is so annoying to me. Hehe. But my Brooks have better traction. So that's kind of a toss-up.

@greenolivetree I just looked, and by the looks of the Nike website, the 32 is just an update of the 31, The tread looks very similar if not the same. Good to know they worked for you on gravel. I'll give mine a try on ashort run and see how they do.

@ceciliaslater Great race recap! Congrats on finishing and for the sub-5 time! Sounds like a challenging course and difficult conditions!

@Stoshew71 How many doubles are you doing per week these days? Are you using them to get more miles or are you doing specific work at different times of day? Just curious!

    2-3 depending...

Monday should have been a longer 8 or 10 mile run but I needed to get into work early today. Plus I was too sore to run a whole 8 or 10 in one shot. So I elected to break this morning's run up in half and do the rest today at lunch.

Normally, I have been doing Tue's and Thurs' runs as doubles. I used to do 10 on Mon, Tue, Thur. That got real old after a while. So I started to break them up into 2 runs.

Tue and Thurs morning are group runs and I tend to run them faster. Tue morning has more hills (unless I do the flat downtown Madison course) and every other Thursday morning my group decided to do hill repeats.

Thanks @Amandajs232 I read stuff in the past on the subject. I was actually interested in @WhatMeRunning 's personal experience with beets.

@ceciliaslater - Way to go, making the best of sub-optimal preparation and injury recovery. It's always good to be happy with your race, even if it's not a PR. On the cheap blankets - some races give out mylar blankets at the end. I didn't take the mylar blanket at Buffalo, but last November I took the one from Good Life Halfsy. I didn't need it at the time, but my thought was to haul it to Boston for use as a pre-race disposable.
