Can I loose weight without starving?

Is it possible to loose weight if you eat when you're hungry and stop when you're full?
Or do I have to starve? It seems the only time I've ever succeeded with loosing is through starvation (HCG a year ago and unhealthy crash diets in my 20s).
I have given myself a good "break" from dieting for a good 9 months but I don't gained nearly 20 lbs. They NEED to come off, but I don't think my psyche or my body can handle another assault... And I've never been successful with a moderate calorie deficit.
Any advice welcomed:?

I don't want to give up cream in my coffee, or wine a few times a week. do I have to?
I run 3-5 times a week and do yoga too

You don't have to give up anything! Really! You just need to be in a deficit, a reasonable deficit, a nothing to carzy deficit.
What are your stats? Age, weight, height and goal weight?1 -

If you drink coffee (even with a bit of powder creamer) all day to starve off hunger and simultaneously drink a big glass of water as you eat each bite at dinner, you won't likely even eat enough calories!!!
If you snack on starchy, salty, heavily spiced snacks all day, eat dried side dishes and calorie dense meats for dinner, you'll easily eat enough calories for 2 days+.

Of course you can and most of the truly successful people on here have lost and maintained their weight using moderation in all things.
In all honesty you need to change your mind set about losing weight.
Look back at how you have tried to lose weight in the past. Have you been able to keep it up? Have you fallen of the wagon? Why would you want to keep suffering through these fad diets and shakes etc only to fail?

I use full fat half-and-half in my coffee and have wine almost every night. I try to walk every night, but don't always do it.
30+ lbs down and on my way to goal.
Oh, and I'm turning 51 next month and I'm peri-menopausal.
If it works for me, it will work for you. Sounds like the main thing you need is an attitude adjustment.

Sounds to me like the only thing you are lacking is patience to see it through! You already know what doesn't work and haven't given what has been proven to work the time to make a difference in your body. Another thing, do not rely on the stupid scale to show you change. Take those embarrassing "before" pictures and sock them away for future reference, dig them out in a few months and see the difference. The other measuring stick to go by is your current clothing, give it some time and you will notice a difference. You can do this! Just give it time to work and don't beat yourself up over a treat now and then.1

I don't get hungry unless I don't eat enough. My diary is open, check it out.0

Yes you can.
However, you need to get rid of the "instant gratification" mentality, because there is none in weight loss. It takes alot of time and patience.2 -
Weight loss takes consistency. You're gonna have to stick it out longer than a week before feeling so discouraged you just stop. Keep going. You need to concentrate on water intake (since thirst and hunger cues are so similar) and filling foods. Don't jump on fads... they're in and out with the season for a reason.1

Yes. And yes. An attitude adjustment is in order. But are you hungry in your success? I don't mean cravings? I mean does your stomach growl before bed at night? That's my marker.
Honestly? No, not usually. Play around with your daily menu and find what foods are most satisfying for you. I make sure to get plenty of protein during my meals and daytime snacks. At night I sit down with a glass of wine, some dark chocolate and I'm good to go!

If you do it right you shouldn't be "starving".
Try a 500 calorie deficit, add in cardio so you can eat small treats, try to get in at least 80 grams of protein or more through protein shakes or lean meats like chicken, turkey and fish, log everything to a T, weighing it all on a food scale, and you will lose weight. You won't feel hungry, and you can enjoy treats. Fill up your tummy with veggies through the day. They don't have much in the way of calories. Spinach, celery, peppers, and cucumbers are great to munch on.
I eat chocolate often. Tootsie rolls are great BTW. Low calories and they last a while. I drink wine and beer every day. One or the other, not both and always in moderation.
Hunger isn't an issue for me and I am losing weight at a steady .5 lb a week on a 250 cal def. 500 cal deficit will make you lose 1 lb a week but you still shouldn't feel hungry if you eat lean meats and veggies.
You can friend me if you want help. :-)2 -

No. And I eat 1300 during the week days with some higher days on the weekend. I have just learned what keeps me full and the best macro break down for me.1 -
I don't do this but why not try doing cardio everyday like 800 - 1000 and eat those Cal back maybe not all but 3/4 maybe?
I work full time from home and have 2 kids little kids who don't even let me pee by myself. If I did that one of them would likely end up riding their bikes in the highway. Good suggestion though. No excuses though - that's just not sustainable for me0 -

Yep, silly advice. Hopefully that was sarcasm.0 -

Sorry, it's too high, in my opinion. I have a similar stats and that's what I go by to share with you. I walk averagely and keep active most of the time, ie not sitting down. My 1 lbs/week loss mainly comes from intense exercise. I eat 1300 to 1500 / day
Like me you also like to binge (little or a lot) once in a while.
But try your number for 2 weeks and make adjustment.

Thank you! I'm always worried about dropping too low and Eating my muscle, like I did with HCG.0
-
I worry about that too. That's why the weekly feedback of the number of lbs lost is important. Shouldn't be too high but shouldn't be nonexistent either that could hurt your effort.0

Just to give you a comparison point, I'm an inch taller than you, a year older, and don't have kids to chase, but have otherwise similar stats. I lose a pound a week fairly consistently on 1700 calories/day. Play with your numbers, track as accurately as you can manage, and adjust as needed.1 -

Can the kids take a walk with you? Ride bikes with you? Be pushed in a stroller by you? You might find getting that energy out of them via a walk will relax all three of you.1 -

Thanks! I always like a good reference point from real people, not just a caluclator0 -
I had to switch to long-term mentality. Someone on a thread I read said that the time will pass anyway...it can pass getting you closer to or further away from your goal:) I love that! Even if it's 1/4-1/2 lb per week it's getting you closer to goal, so find the highest calories you can still lose on and stick to that for awhile. I eat low cal snacks during the day (carrots with ff Italian dressing, apple slices) so I save calories for chocolate or frozen dark sweet cherries at night in bed usually:)4

I think we will always be able to accomplish what we make time for. I have three kids under 4 and am able to workout 6 times a week- sure it's often midnight-1am and I'm cursing the instructor's name, but I make it happen because I've decided its a priority for me. So adding more cardio as the PP suggested can be achieved (even if its carved out of sleep ) if you really want to. If you don't that's fine too, but its definitely an option if you want, don't feel like you're trapped in mom world (I know as a mom that's hard because we put so much into everyone else and then wonder where the hell we fit. I feel bad carving out my own time!).
Re: caloric consumption I'm 5'9" and the same weight as you and eating closer to 1,100-1,300 (while breastfeeding) but am definitely not starving as I follow LCHF which has satiety benefits. Which low carb faction did you follow in the past? What was the issue you had in staying on the WOE? Are you losing (even marginally) when you stick stringently to the 1,600 calorie limit? I would gain on 1,600 but I also have a kind of garbage metabolism.
Hang in there, once you sort out how you want to move forward with your deficit you're going to do great!0 -
I'm 5'9" and I lost all my weight eating around 1800-2000 calories. I'm glad I started with such a small deficit because I never would have stuck with it had I had a bigger deficit.
I can NOT sleep when I'm hungry. I save 200 - 300 every night right before bed so i don't go to sleep hungry2
