I do not see anyone coming down hard on anyone. People are sharing their thoughts. The word support does not mean agreeing with someone - it means giving assistance. People need to look at it through a different lens and stop being insulted if people do not agree with them and think of it as people trying to help them.
If you look at the post count of the many mfp people who are being accused of coming down hard on people you will notice that they have a high post count. You will notice a lot of them have lost a lot of weight, and have been successful. They are here to share some of the knowledge they have learned. A lot of them are now at maintenance and being successful at that as well.
If you look at the post count of the many mfp people who are asking about shakes, fad diets, etc. you will notice they are low. They are new and asking advice from people who have been at it a while. A lot of times they are looking for a quick fix or are not sure how losing weight really works. Not always, but quite a lot!
There is so much misinformation out there about how to lose weight and this misinformation just gets perpetuated by media and the diet industry. It doesn't take a special meal plan, tablet, shake, insert newest diet fad here to lose weight. The people on mfp who have been on this journey are trying to help people see that none of this is necessary and that it can be done without falling into a diet fad trap.
If you want to use slimfast to help you lose weight, and it is helping you then great! But don't accuse people of not being supportive because they are offering a different perspective or trying to educate people about the very basic concept of weight loss which is burning more calories than you eat.9 -
I did slimfast last year I loved their chocolate shake unfortunetly I didn't lose weight now I know why I didn't because I was eating too much at dinner time what I though what was a good meal I was eating it's double so probably once a while it would be nice to go back to slimfast maybe not everyday but definetly once or twice a week .At the moment I am not eating breakfast but do have my lunch and dinner and it's going pretty well I have lost 1 1/2 stone.I do find at times it gets quite stressful to make lunch for my self dinner is fine as everyone in our house sits together. So I might buy slimfast for next month just to take the hassle out from making lunch for myself I used powders but I am thinking maybe I should buy the prepared shakes.Best of luck with your plan I am sure it will help you lose your weight1

I don't really understand the use of shakes either. So if one shake is about 200 calories (I'm just putting in a number here, I don't really know how much they are)... why don't you just count out your calories to make a 200 calorie breakfast or lunch?
I mean I understand the need for maybe something quick sometimes or on the go, but honestly, are you going to drink shakes forever? Because when you do lose the weight from restricting calories with shakes, THEN what? Do you go back to eating your regular diet (that made you gain weight in the first place)?
Part of calorie counting is learning portion control. I mean the shakes will work, but they'll teach you nothing at all about modifying your behavior. So you'll end up on that cycle of shakes to lose the weight... go back to regular diet and gain weight... go back to shakes... go back to regular diet... lose, gain, lose, gain.
But I guess that's how Slim Fast makes their money. Keeping people on that endless cycle.6 -

OP, perfect advice!
When you say you would eat massive amount of cereal for breakfast, why not weigh out a portion of cereal. I used to overeat cereal too. I now know what a real portion looks like. SlimFast left me ravenous. The people MFP are just trying to help you.0 -

This!!! You did get some pretty poor responses from some purists here. When I first started my weight-loss journey up around 225 lbs. I didn't have access to whole foods during my work day., or ways to keep those foods safe during the work day. So I did do a lot of slim fast bars and slim fast shakes. Zone bars were also a frequent go to. They all had decent macros and it's a helluva better choice than some others. The most important thing is go with what works for you now. Eventually you will evolve to what will work for you down the road. Think of this as a long term journey and not a sprint.
I'm not doing Slimfast now, but please feel free to add me as a friend. Good luck and let us know how you are doing. Despite some of the responses MFP is a great support structure that has helped me achieve my goal weight.
Not agreeing with someone's choices because experienced people have discovered that these shakes are a scam =/= "You did get some pretty poor responses from the purists here." How does that make me a "purist" - whatever that is? There's nothing "pure" or even "clean" about my diet - I eat a well-balanced, healthy diet that includes lots of treats like chocolate, ice cream and chips, because having lost 75 lbs, I know that deprivation - for me - is neither sustainable long term, nor realistic. And it's also not necessary.
Except the OP was not asking for advice. She was looking to connect with people on a similar path. Instead of just moving on, most responders came in with their holier than tho responses with out knowing a single thing about the OP and her circumstances.

Can I ask - as I'm on Slimfast diet am I not aloud to post on here? And to see if anyone else is doing the same or similar diet? I'm just looking for support - I feel like any of my posts about Slimfast I get a lot of negativity?
I understand everyone has the own opinions on the Slimfast/ meal replacement. Just so you know I started it to loose 7lb. I do eat pretty healthy anyway but I was eating bigger portions and created a lovely little muffin top haha so I started my diet as I was a little short on time - also I have two young children I spend a lot of time in/out going to pre school, toddler groups/ collect from pre sch etc and often don't have much time to prepare a low cal meal for lunch. I'm aware I need to go on to a maintain plan as would anyone once there at there goal! I'm planning on having one meal substituted and try to have a lower cal breakfast or lunch. I used to have a massive bowl of cereal and biscuits so I'm learning that I need to portion control more and cut out high cal snacks.
I do eat a good dinner I don't just have shakes!
Thank you to the supportive posts and the friend requests it's great to have support no matter which diet you choose x
Of course you are allowed to post here, just know that as with most things Internet related, you will get a lot of responses from people with limited knowledge trying to tell others what to do. The anonimity allows disrespectful freedoms that people wouldn't take in real life.
Seriously, how many people walk up to you and actually tell you what you should be eating?

People on MFP ignore snark when they agree with it. There are tons of purposefully snarky or passive aggressive posts, especially from the more frequent posters, when unpopular questions are asked. The cool thing to do is to then feign ignorance and assert you don't understand why the OP goes on the defensive. You receive brownie points if you defend the stealth snark, too.
People don't like when their Prime Directive is challenged, be it keto, slimfast, IIFYM, vegan, yolo, HAES, etc. If you're going to use the forums, always expect half the replies to be unhelpful or condescending.5 -
Of course you can post if you do Slimfast, Shakeology, the Cabbage Soup Diet or whatever plan you want.
But remember that MFP is a calorie counting site. So most people here are...wait for it...counting calories.
If I went on a Slimfast website and talked about how I thought eating all foods in moderation and not drinking my calories was the way to go, I wouldn't expect a favorable response.7 -
I'm doing Slimfast most days and have lost close to 40 pounds. I just lose easier with the slimfast for some reason. Every couple of weeks I will go off of it for a couple of days to make sure I can maintain the loss and so I'm learning to eat properly. Also I weigh and log everything I eat, so I don't know why people think you can't change your lifestyle while doing slimfast. Most people might not, but it isn't impossible.3

I understand people on here are using calorie controlled diet to loose weight - Slimfast is also a calorie controlled diet the only difference as I can see is I have a shake or usually a bar in replacement. The calories I usually have in either a shake or a bar are 210-230 cals I think I could weigh cereal and try that thank you il give that a go. But what lunch suggestion could I have " real food" 210-230 cals ? Two slices of bread are around 200 cals without any filling? I'm struggling with that hence why I personally find it easier to make up a shake or have a bar. I'm not on here to create any arguments or even asking for opinions originally - I really did/do want to meet others that are following a similar diet to me for support1 -
I didn't realise you had to count 1200 or more calories a day to be classified as a calorie counter?!
On SF men count 1100 of their days calories and women do 900. I guess the deficit must make slimfasters lower on the calorie counting food chain somehow?booksandchocolate12 wrote: »Of course you can post if you do Slimfast, Shakeology, the Cabbage Soup Diet or whatever plan you want.

Those shakes are delicious when popped in the freezer. I used the shakes and counted calories a few years ago when I was attempting to eat better. I don't use it now but you can feel free to add me for support!2

1200 is the lowest level MFP allows. It's the lowest amount you can set your goal to, and if you try to click "Done" in your diary before you've eaten 1200 calories, you will get a warning. 1200 is regarded as the minimum to get in necessary nutrition. It's not about apartheid, it's about safety.0 -
Any of you that are doing Slimfast or similar - there's a great support page on Facebook - Slimfast challenge it's a closed group so your other friends on fb won't be able to read your posts x0

I was just referring to the fact that poster doesn't think 900 calories or 1100 calories is valid calorie counting. The two shakes amount to 400 on top so on MFP it comes up to 1300 and 1500 in total.
Actual food is being counted.kommodevaran wrote: »I didn't realise you had to count 1200 or more calories a day to be classified as a calorie counter?!

And 900 for a woman and 1100 for men is incredibly low. How does one even begin to get the proper nutrition (macros and micros)?

My typical lunch is something like a half cup of full fat cottage cheese (110 cal), a serving of canned peaches (50 calories) and then 5 grams of wheat bran mixed into the cottage cheese for my dietary supplement (17 calories). So 177 calories total. Believe me when I say that lasts me for a while.
If you want more protein, mix in a can of tuna (90 calories) and cut the cottage cheese in half for a total of 212 calories for everything.

Hi - just to let you know that's " actual food calories" you also have two shakes or meal bars/ food pots which are 210-230 cals each so it's about 1320-1360 cals for a woman's day2 -
Thanks, forgot it wasn't exactly 200 for shakes more like 209-230 each.
So men in total get 1560 calories. Women 1360.
Actual calorie counting of 'food' per day is 900 for women, 1100 for men.

I've not read the whole thread but basically around 2 months ago I decided I wanted to lose a bit of weight. I'm 29, 5"4 and was 10 stone. I started off using slim fast for breakfast and lunch, had 2 healthy snacks and a balanced evening meal, after a week or so I swapped my morning shake for bran flakes and skimmed milk or boiled eggs as these had less calories in and I was bored of having 2 shakes and I don't like the bars.
Whether everyone agrees or not slim fast has worked for me, I lost a steady 2lb a week for a month and these last few weeks I've just lost 1lb. I'm now down to 9stone 3 with a target of 9 stone.
Once I've finished with the shakes and reached my goal weight I will use MFP to substitute the shakes for a healthy balanced lunch this maintaining my new weight.6 -

Where did I say that you had to consume a certain number of calories to be classified as a calorie counter? Oh, right. I didn't.
I didn't realize that Slimfast gave you a calorie allotment. In my day, (when I was young...the 80s) it didn't. It was just a shake for breakfast and lunch and a sensible dinner, without telling you what that meant.0 -
The main issues with "diet shake plans" is that most people who use them eventually get bored/sick of them and miss foods they liked for breakfast or lunch but stopped having.
Even if you stick with it long enough to lose the weight, once you're done and you cut back or stop using the shakes, you now need to know how to eat appropriately for breakfast and lunch. Most people go back to eating the way they used to and gain the weight back. I have seen so many women I know use one shake or another as a "diet", lose 10 or 15 lbs, and then decide they are done dieting, go back to how they used to eat because they didn't learn anything, and gain the weight back.
My opinion is the best way to get down to a healthy weight and keep it off is not to go on "a diet". Instead take the time to learn how to eat the foods you love in the correct portions and learn to love new foods all in combination so that you eat the right amount of calories to stay at a healthy weight for the rest of your life. Otherwise you just keep yo-yoing until you finally give up for good, like so many people do.
People aren't being unsupportive, they just don't want you to waste time on something we all wasted time doing ourselves, when you can start right now on adopting a new lifestyle rather than going on a diet. People can be a little, ummm, blunt on the internet, but the motives are good. Best of luck with whatever path you choose to reach your goals :drinker:0 -

Oh, okay. That's a little better, I suppose! I thought it was shakes plus food with that many calories.0 -
Looking thru this thread I have noticed one thing. We are all individuals and have different points of view, on shakes vs. food. I think that is awesome. Every option is just that, their views and for that it should be honored not ridiculed. That is my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Good luck in your journey's whatever they might be!3

I couldn't afford to be on a slimfast diet3

IMO, if a product existed to help people effortlessly lose weight and keep it off, the industry would be bankrupt and we'd all be thin.
Slimfast isn't a product invented to solve the obesity epidemic. It's a business, relying on yo-yo dieters to keep coming back for their expensive "food".
I have zero issues with drinking calories if that's your thing. I guess if it were me, I'd make my OWN shakes/smoothies and be done with it.1 -
